The 1978-1979 team consists of last year ' s varsity team except for the loss of one senior and the addition of many talented underclassmen. The return of such a powerful team has led many schools to fear Somerset. Under such pressure Somerset is out to prove they are number one. Hopefully their excellent season will qualify Somerset for the state tournament, where a good finish can be expected. The seniors leading this team to a successful season are Cheryl Freitas, Mary- Ellen Langfield (leading scorer), Chris Torpey, and Gail Ward. As is always the case with Somerset ice hockey, the 79 Raiders had a superb season in the always tough Division I. First of all, much of the team ' s success must be credited to the coaching of Robert Souza. Secondly, the team is composed of seven seniors and five juniors which provides the necessary experience for a successful Season. Yet the loss of seven skaters will be offset by some outstanding potential on Ken Bowers ' j.V. team. 127 Brian Paskowski Dave Medeiros Seniors Mike Medeiros Ken Cordeiro Mike Krawetz Greg Cabral Capt. Through determination and hustle, the Raid¬ ers achieved many exciting come from behind victories. The season was also highlighted by first ever victories over strong Durfee and New Bedford teams. The Cinderella story has come true for the Raiders thanks to the torrid 21 point a game average of senior guard, Chris Gendreau, the timely scoring and rebounding of Bill Sullivan, and the all-around hustle of Bill Malloy. Sen¬ iors Derek Tavares, Mark Mollo, and Jim Upperman never failed to make their presence known when they entered a game. Strong performances by underclassmen Bob Brabant, Kyle Snell, Chris Correa, Jim O ' Neil, Rick Brabant, Bill Lach, and Ralph Cross also helped to ensure the success of this season. Hopefully, they will return next year to equal and surpass the fine 1978-79 season of the Blue Raiders. COACH McDonald and tri-captains Chris Gendreau, Bill Sullivan and Bill Malloy. Middle Row: Jane Cote, Nancy Cote, Lois Rego, Pam Tavares, Front: Judy Cote. The 1978-1979 gymnastics team is once again undefeated and has extended its string of victories to 43 consecutive wins. With the addition of four very strong gymnasts, this is perhaps the strongest varsity team Somerset has ever produced. Once again the Somerset team is a strong contender for the state title. Depth in all events has been the key to its success, team work its mainstay, and stable coaching its backbone. These three elements have brought a new dimension to the team and been a right light in Somerset ' s varsity pro¬ grams. The team is led by a number of outstanding individuals. Senior captain Judy Cote and jane Bence, Nancy Cote and jane Cote com¬ peted as alternating all-around gymnasts. Cheryl Lach, Lois Rege, Lisa DePoala, and Patty Mullins competed consistently in three events. Michelle Arruda and Pam Tavares, specializing in vaulting, contributed with excellent scores all season long. A special thanks goes to coaches Bill Barni¬ coat, Stan Cosselin, Bill Barrar, and trainer Mike Pomerleau whose dedicated work throughout the season helped put Somerset gymnastics on top. 137 More Photos by. . . uo I I Library Aides: June Wilkins, Anne Mitchell, Deddie Antone. .
