Dinner Theatre II The evenings of November 20, 21, and 22, brought to Somerset its second annual Dinner Thea¬ tre. Organized and co-directed by Mr. Kiah O’Brien III and Miss Sharon Hamlen, the Dinner Theatre involved the performances of two one act plays. The first, called The Matching Piece directed by Miss Hamlen, was a contemporary comedy that starred Donna Robillard as Maykin Hite, Lynne Moran as June Reed, Ken McNulty as Jim Reed, Annette Racine played Susan, Dick was played by Stanley Gold, and Fred Forcyzk played Bruce. The second play, Itchin To Get Hitched, was directed by Mr. Kiah O ' Brien III. This hillbilly farce starred Betsy Saab as Maw, Dave Correira as Paw, Jennifer Cocoran as Pearley Mae, Ellen Cuttle as Lizzy, Roger Jussaume as Clem, Chris Woods as Uncle Fud, and Mark Walkinson as Hank. The Dinner Theatre was coordinated as part of a class project by Mr. O’Brien ' s play production class. Most crew heads and crew members were from this class. Other students became involved as well. Pro¬ duction Staff Heads were as follows: Stage Manag¬ ers, Brenda Smith and Brenda MacRitchie: Cos¬ tumes, Ellen Cuttle; Makeup, Donna Robillard: Construction and Props, Chris Woods; Publicity, Dave Correira: Lighting, Ken McNulty; House and Tickets, Lisa Forczyk and Colleen O’Neil. Under the excellent coaching of Sheila Fitzgerald and this year ' s tri-captains, Mary Ellen Brough, Kim Curt and Sue Mar- cellus, the team had a remarkable record of thirteen wins and no losses. The girls also entered into the state tournament ranked as the No. 1 team in all of Massachusetts, but despite determined effort, they lost in the semi-finals. The captains along with Mary Mello, Elaine Leite and Pam Tessier played varsity for the three years in which Somerset won the league championship. Without these girls and their tremendous amount of spirit and determination, the team ' s remarka¬ ble record would have been impossible. Volleyball This year the Girl ' s Volleyball team led by co-captains Maureen Arruda and Pat Russell had a very successful season winning seven games and losing four. Despite its inexperience, the team placed third due to long hours of hard practice and they won the reputation of being the strongest serving team in the league. For the first time ever, Volleyball has become a fall spon which accounts for the loss of many former team members obviously: however, this loss did not stop them. Co-captain Maureen Arruda has been on the league all star team for four consecutive years and has been voted Somerset High School ' s most valuable Volleyball player for the past two years. She has started in every game since her freshman year and is considered to be the best server in the league. Sue Sheppard, a newcomer on the team, was the most improved player. I Football The 1975 Somerset High football team, under the direction of new coach Ed Winslow, finished the season with a two wins, six losses, and one tie record. This record was deceiving as most of the opponents were much larger schools. The Somerset defense was one of the top ranked in the conference and this was exemplified in the power of their hitting. The Blue Raiders started the season with a scoreless tie against Dur- fee. Defensive tackle Chris Brady was selected Defensive Player of the Week by the Boston Globe for his outstanding play in the game. After the Durfee game, Somerset lost five games in a row before soundly trouncing Barnstable on Cape Cod, 30-6. Next the Raiders were beaten by an excellent New Bedford team. On Thanksgiving morning Somerset manhandled the Case Cardinals, 21-0, The victory enabled Somerset to retain the 49ers Trophy, sym¬ bolic of the winner of this rivalry. Co-Captain Mike McGee scored the winning touchdown on a 44 yard run and also knocked down a Cardinal pass into the end zone on a fourth down play. For his efforts, McGee won the Nicholas Cariglia Award as the game ' s Most Valuable Player. Norman England and Bobby Correia scored the other touchdowns and Jim Mullins kicked all three conversions. Outstanding as Seniors for Somerset were Mike Mahoney who led the team in tackles, Co-Captain guard Mark Raposo, end Kevin Cashmon, defensive end Mark Foster, linebacker Gary Berube, McGee, Brady, tackle Bob Davidson, linemen Mark Carleton, Paul Soares, John David, Chip Corcoran, ends Jerry Pereira, Bob Coombes, Greg Clark, halfback Bob Correia, defensive halfbacks T. J. Costa, Kenny Vieira, Paul Ward, and Mike Guarniere. T. J . Costa was the only Somerset player selected to the All-Con¬ ference team as voted by the coaches. CHAPMAN At the Case Rally held at Somerset High last Wednesday, Blue Raider head coach Ed Winslow said, tomorrow we will eat Cardinal, and that Is exactly what Somerset did as they trounced Case, 21-0. Some 4,000 fans braved the wind and rain to witness Somerset retain the 49ers trophy last Thanksgiving morning at Case. Somerset Co-Captain saved the finest game of his career for the last as he rushed for 83 yards on 11 carries for a 7.55 average and played a standout game on defense. Somerset Junior Steve Billington also had an excellent game as he ran for 61 yards in only seven carries for an 8.71 average. The kick was good and the game was great. 127 )untry The Somerset High Cross Country Team, coached by Richard Bernardo, finished strongly by winning their last four meets of the season. The squad ended up with a 6 wins, 2 losses record which was good for third place in the conference. The co-captains for the 1975 season were Rick Bence and Mark Weinstien. The two other seniors were Paul Bradbury and Barbara Jenkins. Bradbury was unde¬ feated in the dual meets played at Som¬ erset. Jenkins won two of the girls dual meets and improved a great deal over last season. Coach Bernardo said the team’s success was due to all of the participants per¬ forming well in the meets. He felt that if it were not for the efforts of the fifth, sixth, and seventh men the record could have been reversed. Other outstanding players for the team included junior Ted Higginson, sopho¬ mores Jim Kane and Bill Lapointe, and freshmen Bill Robitaille and Michelle Lussier. In conclusion Coach Bernardo said, I am extremely pleased with Robitaille, the freshmen, and the girls. Robitaille is the best freshman I have had in a long time. I would like to thank Mark Wein¬ stien for his faithfulness and Rick Bence for doing a lot of work on his own and always being prepared every time we had a meet. Keith Cucinotta was the leading scorer with six goals followed by Senior Co-Captain Bob Lavigne, Senior Chuck Pappas, and Rick Fonseca with four each, Udy Klienberger and Manny Charves with three apiece. Defense was one of the team’s biggest assets as they allowed an average of 1.75 goals per game. Coach Horton said that freshman Ken Cordeiro did a terrific job in goal. He also lauded the defensive play of Seniors Barry Bibeau, and Paul Machado, Bob Stafford, Charves, and Senior Co-Captain Paul Souza. Senior Ray Torres also played his pan in the team effort. Overall the team had an impressive 17-2-1 record during the regular season. They qualified for the Eastern Massachusetts Schoolboy Hockey Tournament and beat a tough Hanover team in the opening round. The team had a number of outstanding players. Sophomore Ron Marcellus led the entire state in goals scored and became the second Southeastern Mass. Conference player to go over 100 points for his career. Captain Claude Tetreauli was the first player to do it and he holds many of the team ' s records. Seniors Don Parks and Jihi Vital were among the best defensive forwards in the area. Other area coaches were envious of the Blue and White ’s defensemen. Seniors Bob Gardella, Scott Kelleher, and Paul LaFlamme showed how that position should be played.
