' V THE RAIDER 1973 SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL SOMERSET MASSACHUSETTS Learning . . . Shall we not learn from life its laws , dynamics, balances? Learn to base our needs not on death, destruction , waste, but on renewal? In wisdom and in gentleness learn to walk again with Eden ' s angels? Learn at last to shape a civilization in harmony with the earth? 3 4 Life and death on this planet now lie in Man s hands. At depth after depth we penetrate these phenomena which encompass us. Still beyond our grasp shimmer the ultimate truths. Unless we master these how shall we learn — not to die — but to live? 5 This , as citizens , we all inherit. This is ours, to love and live upon, and use wisely down all the generations of the future. 6 Time, alone, will determine the impact of this year. 7 ■p Saif SjHBSPlS mmm m n r i r • i p= i ' y =f 1 Principal Carl W. McDermott Without ideals, Without effort and scholarship, Without philosophical continuity, There is no such thing as education. Abraham Flexner Mr. Carl W. McDermott has been a familiar sight to the Class of 1973 since our junior high school days and has seen us develop mentally and socially from adolescence to young adulthood. His awareness of the problems encountered by high school students combined with his concern and involvement at Somerset High School make him a truly unique principal. 10 V;; JfeSi ' f w ' m ■ (m Si 1 a II Mr. Thomas Daley Assistant to Superintendent Mr. Edward Kaylor Secondary School Supervisor 1973 A d m 0 I n 0 i s t r a t 0 o n Mr. Francis J. In teaching history, English and co¬ operative education at SHS, Mr. Taylor has shown an interest in his students which is recipro¬ cated by respect and admiration. His personality and easy manner is seen in his ability to work effectively with students and staff at SHS. At Somerset High School — Mr. Robert Taylor , the “1973 MAN! 14 %rij imm fMPSp • a . - : •1 The Faculty . . . The facility at Somerset High School has been built much in the same way a championship team is built. It begins from within with a dedicated and determined perspective by those people allowing them to reach out with leadership and under¬ standing to each student, regarding him as the individual he is. It is a team that consists of people with different opinions and prejudices and with a variety of talents. Each person, although devoted to his own speciality has not lost sight of the overall educational environment and has become molded into one teaching unit, providing involvement and guidance in areas outside their own specific subjects. This crucial attitude by the faculty reflects on the overall growth and success by the ; students and the student body. It is with fondness and respect that we dedicate the next few pages to you, the teachers of Somerset High School. MR. ALDEN ENGUSH MR. AZEVEDO INDUSTRIAL ARTS MR. AUDETTE INDUSTRIAL ARTS MR. The team placed second in a newly formed league, replacing the old Bristol County Girls League. Their sea¬ son started out slowly with games ending in 0-0 ties. As the season progressed scores were more like 3-0, or 5-1 for the Raiderettes victories. It was the Blue and White’s first year of competition in the newly formed Southeastern Athletic Conference which saw SHS matched against many of the former Bristol County League and Capeway Conference powerhouses. The Raiders may have been outscored in several of these encounters but under the leader¬ ship of tri-captains John Wright, Wayne Farias, and John Cashmon, they were never outclassed. The highlight of the 72 Raider campaign was a 20-6 victory over Case in the annual Thanksgiving Day Super Bowl”, which brought the 49’ers trophy back to Somerset — its real home! 100 [ [ IK Front Row: A. The 22 Somerset seniors who donned a Somerset football jersey for the final time wanted nothing more than to return the 49 crs trophy to Som¬ erset, a feat that had been denied them the previous two years. They did just that as they stopped Case with two final quarter T.D.’s and a final score of 21-7. The Blue and White opened up the scoring in the first quarter when senior halfback Bill Brough sprinted fifty yards up the middle with the pigskin. Case went ahead in the opening of the third quarter by a score of 7-6. But in the final quarter two more Somerset seniors, John Cashmon and Steve Galib went into their act, backed by a strong, aggressive defense and when the smoke cleared the Raiders had a 21-7 victory, and possession of the long lost 49 trophy. It was a game that will long be remembered by players and fans alike. h The Spirit Leaders! Diane Paskowski, Susan Murphy (Head), Debbie Sharpies. Susan Mello, Betty Lebow, Colette Lapointe. The team was led by captain Ken Bowers who topped the league in scor¬ ing and was named M.V.P. At the close of the season the Raiders dominated the all-star team with five selections. Sophomore Bob Stromaier led the league with four shut¬ outs and best goals against average. Defenseman Gary Breen was named the league’s best defenseman and won the sportsmanship award.
