' V: ; • • ' t: THE RAIDER 1972 SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL In a world where rebellion and unrest is common, the environment at Somerset High School is unique. The at¬ tributes of the student body and of the faculty reflect the influences which combine to promote an atmosphere of non-violent change and progress. The 1972 RAIDER at¬ tempts to depict life at SHS by exposing the high school in motion — the activities, the people, and the academics which influence each student. All of these elements com¬ bine to create an atmosphere of learning, fun, question¬ ing, and involvement. The result is a school that stresses not only academics, but also human ‘development and un¬ derstanding. mm dosage . % ttu. ' : ' Vi£ • ' s,: -•- v ' • ' V. How many years ago was that — ten, fifteen, or more, when we lived at Somerset in that time before? That time before we grew so big, before we grew so tall. Before our eyes were wide enough to see beyond the wall. How many years ago was that — it seems so long ago when we lived at Somerset And watched the summer go. There’s a cold wind coming, I can tell. Blowing back the memories of times we loved so well. When we lived at Somerset a life or so away every day was Sunday and every month was May. How many years ago was that ten, fifteen, or more, when we lived at Somerset in that time before? 1 III 1 1 IH | ! Ill- IT r Jr; rip! Here at Somerset High, we are fortunate to have Mr. Carl McDermott, a man dedi¬ cated to aiding our development at SHS. In addition to guiding us, seeking new educational methods, and sometimes disciplining us, Mr. McDermott is an avid sports fan. He continuously supports the Raider teams, and whether we win or lose, he can always be counted on for a word of encouragement and a smile. To this man of sincerity and deep concern for others, the Class of 1972 dedicates these pages. EDWARD J. KAYLOR Secondary School Supervisor THOMAS E. DALEY Assistant to Superintendent FRANCIS J. KILGREW Superintendent EDWARD L. SULLIVAN Assistant Principal 13 MR. DONALD GRIFFIN The Class of 1972 takes this opportunity to dedicate THE RAIDER ’72” to Mr. Donald Griffin. Mr. Griffin, a teacher of biology is a man of concern and sensitivity in regard to his role as a teacher at Somerset High. As a member of the faculty for many years, he has contributed to the expansion of our school and to the excellence of its science department. His warm approach to teaching is exemplary of his interest in his students. As a teacher and a man, the 1972 Raider honors Mr. Griffin for a job well done. 15 FACULTY The faculty at SHS is a very special group of people. Active in the classroom, the corridors, the various clubs and organizations, they strive to meet every student halfway, not only as advisors, but as friends. This unique fellowship between faculty and students creates an atmosphere of cooperation and understanding of which Somerset is proud. An average routine consists of preparing lessons, an ex¬ hausting day of trying to reach the students, advising an activity group, attending faculty meetings, and even covering detention. These are some of the little things which often go unnoticed, but are essential to a successful school day. It was capped by Somerset’s first state championship since 1958. The team was crowned Mass. State Division IV Champions after their first place finish in the State Class Meet held in Franklin Park, Bos¬ ton on October 30. The five scorers were Co-Captains Kevin Gartner and Ed Lussier, Paul Griffo, Bob Almeida, and Randy Osga. The Raider’s dominated the league throughout the season and annexed their second straight Narry League Championship. Over the last three years of league competition, they have compiled 17 straight victories. Overall the squad was undefeated in dual meets, with the toughest competition coming from New Bedford High. This year saw Somerset hosting its first Somerset Invitational Cross-Country Meet. The team also did well in competition with teams throughout Rhode Island and with others from New York. The J.V. team, un¬ fortunately, had few meets, but they showed promise and should contribute to the team’s strength next year. 90 91 FIELD HOCKEY — 72 The Somerset High School Girl’s Field Hockey Team completed a most successful season with a record of 5-3-1. This year’s team headed by Co- Captains Linda Silvia and Jane Dator, boasted an exceptionally strong de¬ fense. Highlights of the season were games with Stang High School and the traditional big game with Case High School of Swansea. This year’s team was coached by Miss Sheila Fitzgerald. 1st Row }. Miss Frtzgerald (coach). 93 FOOTBALL 71 During the 1971 football season, the Somer¬ set High Blue Raiders faced some of the stiffest competition Somerset teams have seen in years. The boys rose to the tasks and silenced the skeptics who had foreseen a losing season. They convincingly defeated strong and favored teams in the persons of Attleboro — BCL champions, Fairhaven — tops in the Capeway Ixaguc. and Stoughton — one of the best teams in the Hockamock League. In their losses to Barrington and Seekonk, the toughest competitor proved to be the clock as the Raiders nearly scored the winning points in the closing seconds of the ball game. Coach McDonald, in his first year as head coach, led his squad to a respectable 3-3 re¬ cord. Somerset, as usual, outsized in every contest, proved that hustle, desire, team¬ work, and character are truly the ingredients needed to produce a winning season. The relatively small offense line, the quick and versatile backfield, and fine all-round defen¬ sive play brought about the success of this year’s team. Congratulations and thanks are in order for this past season. 94 BLUE RAIDER MARCHING BAND Somerset High School is very proud of its marching band. This orga¬ nization adds color to the football field and spirit to the games and pep rallies. The band has participated in many competitions in the past, and now has been invited to compete in a festival in Florida in 1973. During this past fall, the band has traveled to North Adams for the fourth consecutive time, and in the competition, placed third in the state. We must realize how hard the band works and we thank the stu¬ dents and Mr. Perry for what they have given to our school. 1 101 102 1 J ■ 7 t x ' vt it . The traditional corridor displays surpassed any seen in recent years, and it was clear that each class spent hours painting, planning, and decorating. The judging, however, included not only the corridor decorations, but also class skits, spirit, participation, and the cheering competition. The Freshmen delighted everyone with their own version of T.V.’s Laugh-In. The Sophomores presented a clever spoof on television commercials. A lesson concerning Raiders was taught on Sesame Street by the Junior Class, and the Seniors paid tribute to Coach Mc¬ Donald with a hilarious interpretation of This Is Your Life . . . s i 10 7 . . . Although every class deserved to win, one came out on top. Amid colored balloons, homemade confetti, joy, and tears, the winners were announced. First in the cheering competition were the Seniors, and this year’s winner of the Case Rally — The Jun¬ ior Class! 108 109 THANKSGIVING 1971 This year’s Blue Raider Football Squad, while posting a successful 5-3 record, ended their season with a very disappointing finale at Veteran’s Fie ld in Swansea. The Case Cardinals scored first and made the conver¬ sion attempt. Somerset came right back and cut the Case lead to two points, 8-6. In the second half, the scoring was duplicated, making the score 16-12. The Cardinals were then satisfied in just maintaining their ground game and running out the clock. Our team kept playing the fine brand of football they had exhibited all season, but unfortunately, the breaks of the game just seemed to fall Case’s way. When the final whistle blew, the Cardinal’s had, according to most people, upset the Raiders for the second consecutive year. But as the students of both Somerset and Case High well know, no team can be realistically favored in a game with such traditions as the annual Thanksgiving Day battle. 112 Who’s Teaching Who? However, the club seemed to fall victim to unfortunate circumstances, suffering two losses to Bridgewater-Rayn- ham and one to Dennis-Yarmouth. Two victories were gained over the club’s old rival, Portsmouth Priory, making our overall record 2 wins — 3 losses. Again, Coach Horton was a great benefit to the club. The strongest events proved to be the side horse and the rings. John Slaby, excel¬ lent on the horse, was matched by no one in the area. Mike Simbrom took command of the rings, performing with competence at every meet. Rick Heroux was one of the most promising newcomers, com¬ peting in several events. The S.H.S. gymnastics team has many new prospects and a bright outlook to next year’s club. D. MESSIER D. DeCOSTA M. HASLAM R. HEROUX P. RENAUD P. TRUDEAU B. PEDDER COACH HORTON M. SIMBROM D. Coached by Miss Murphy and captained by Lucille Levesque, the team practiced from No¬ vember to March in preparation for the Bristol County Girls’ Gymnas¬ tics League meet. Led by two talented captains, Karen O’Keefe and Barbara Norman, the var¬ sity team performed enthusiastically throughout the sea¬ son. With a formidable win over Case, the team con¬ cluded the season with eight wins and four losses. The Junior Varsity team again completed a champion¬ ship year for Somerset High School. With an outstand¬ ing effort, a record of eleven wins and no losses was compiled. The Junior Varsity, coached by Miss Fitzger¬ ald certainly gives SHS the depth and strength for suc¬ cessful future seasons. J. Dator, N. Shea, S. McDonald, Co-captains: K. O’Keefe and B. Norman, J. Connolly, Case, and Holy Family were as strong and as well-balanced as they have been in recent years. The Blue Raiders compiled a 104 regular season record, being beaten twice only by an exceptional paro¬ chial team. In play with Connolly and Case, Somerset had a 1-1 season tally with each. Led by the consistently good play of Tri- Captains Kevin Snell, Mike Jenkinson, and Dave Driscoll, the squad combined back- court quickness, fine backboard play, and percentage shooting. Their second place fin¬ ish in league competition placed the Raiders in the State Tourney. The Raiders advanced to the quarterfinals in the tournament, but were finally defeated by the Rockland bas¬ ketball team. W jbL j ■Pv 3BF . Somerset won this encounter through some fine clutch performances in the final quarter. The Raiders outlasted Connolly, 68-62. In the quarterfinals, Somerset was matched with a strong Rockland squad whose main asset was unusual depth. The halftime score was 40-39, as our team stayed close through tough defense and selective shooting. But, throughout the second half, Rockland had a decisive height advantage and utilized this edge to end Somerset’s tournament hopes for this season. 1 ml • I Compliments of A FRIEND” and HORNER MILL WORK CORP 1215 G A R. With a fi ne 17-6 overall record, the Raiders played exceptionally good baseball after two early league losses, one to Connolly and one to Seek¬ onk. Included in their record were two convinc¬ ing victories over the Case High Cardinals. Once again, the Raiders qualified for the state baseball tournament, but for the first time in six years, failed to advance to the semifinal stage. Somerset’s first tournament opponent was Hingham High School in a game played at Hanson Field in Somerset. After taking an early 3-1 lead, Somerset was plagued with mis¬ takes. Hingham outlasted the Raiders 4-3 in a ten inning ball game, this defeat stopping Somerset’s tournament hopes for 1972. Due to poor weather conditions, which ham¬ pered practice sessions, the team got off to a rather slow start. However, once this extremely high-spirited team ignited, there was no way to stop them. The girls went to victory from then on. Highlighting the 1972 Raiderettes’ season were two major upsets in the league standings. The first being a defeat for Westport and the sec¬ ond a striking victory over Durfee. Both these teams were predestined for the first place seat. Track ’72 The Somerset High track team, coached by Robert Lane and Whitney Horton, had a successful season, suffering only one loss to Seekonk, in the regular season. Their re¬ cord (8 wins — 1 loss) included a long-awaited victory over Dartmouth. The team was the Narry League Relay cham¬ pion, but finished second to Seekonk during the season and in the Narry League Meet. There were four co-captains this year: Wayne Emard, Kevin Gartner, Dean Thurston, and Ed Lussier. There were quite a few school and league records tied or broken during this season. In an early season practice meet with Attleboro, Paul Griffo ran a fine 9:40.0 two-mile to break Ed Lussier’s record by 9 seconds. In the same meet, Kevin Gartner broke Warren Goff’s record in the mile with a 4:33.2 ef¬ fort. In the league meet, Lussier ran a 4:33.1 mile to break the record again. Sophomore Randy Thurston broke the school high jump record, set in 1954, with a 5 r 10 ” leap. Bill Brough tied the school record in the 100 yard dash, set in I960, by running it in 10.1 seconds. Later, in the Narry meet, David Driscoll, running with a cast on his arm, ran 10.2 seconds in the 100 to tie the league meet record. Kevin Gartner broke Francis Brough’s league record in the 880 with a 1:59-8 effort. In the state meet, Gartner again broke the mile record with a time of 4:29-4. A three-course meal, served family-style, followed, and it consisted of Yankee Pot Roast of Beef and Roast Tur¬ key. Awards were then given to deserving Seniors, and the yearbook dedication this year went to Mr. Donald Griffin, a biology teacher at S.H.S. The entertainment for the evening was a unique slide show presented by the class officers and narrated by Class Secretary Kathy Wallace. Entitled You Were There,” the slide show depicted Seniors involved in vari¬ ous activities throughout the year, and it was both hu¬ morous and exciting. Due to lack of interest, the Class Will was dropped this year, but, none-the-less, everyone took advantage of this last Senior gathering to thor¬ oughly enjoy the evening. ri j mt 5Kk inft j fc v 1 gar Jl fM L 1 ■ i a ' 170 Compliments of MOTEL SOMERSET 537 Riverside Ave. Somerset, Mass. and SOMERSET DRUG 1072 County Street Somerset, Mass. Held on the football field at 4:00 on June 11th, the entire event was a series of firsts” for Somerset High. Never before had commencement exercises been held outdoors or on a Sunday, and for the first time, girls wore white caps and gowns. The bleachers were packed with parents, relatives, and friends, watching as the graduates received their long-awaited diplomas. Class Speakers Phyllis Gitlin and Micaela Sullivan left the norm and delivered a speech and a poem, respectively. Class Marshal Leslie Darcy led the graduates to their seats, as the Wind Ensemble played Pomp and Circumstance, and Cantor Barzak, from Temple Beth El, opened the exercises with an invocation. Sixteen awards and schol¬ arships were presented to the students, and the Concert Choir provided the vocal selecti ons. The big moment then arrived. Principal McDermott and Superintendent Kilgrew awarded the graduates with their diplomas. The ceremony ended at 5:30 P.M. marking the close of this year’s graduation exercises, which saw 280 seniors graduate from Somerset High, of which 43 were honor stu¬ dents.
