SOMERSET PUBLIC LIBRARY ' MFRSET. MA 02726 E ' tfylfhVlC LIBRA RY SOMERSET. MA 02726 1 A Somerset Day Begins With . . . An integral part of a Somerset day is the before school ses¬ sion. Along the walkways and corridors are the students, alone or in groups, hurrying and strolling, peopling the school in everv way. Busses are emptying, lockers are slamming and all over, the school is alive. Across the way the cafeteria is buzzing with students, some discussing a homework assign¬ ment or last night’s game, some seated for a few moments to review for an upcoming class, some eating a quick breakfast, and others just having a friendly bull session. Ne r the office, the students are mobbing the secretarial desk for absentees ' class admission slips, while others pause to read current posters and notices along the corridor bulletin boards. Then, as the 7:50 bell rings, the corridors are quickly emptied and all that remains is the sound of an occasional passing footstep. 2 ■ A Somerset Day Consists of . . . When morning classes begin, the mood at Somerset takes on more scholastic overtimes. In 415, students watch intently as their Biology teacher traces on the blackboard a detailed structure of an animal cell. In the language lab, a recording of a native Parisian, rapidly reciting the dialog of Unit 10 is being played. The women’s liberation movement is the topic of an animated discussion in the Social Studies area. Finally, as our little tour comes to a close, a small group of art stu¬ dents are undertaking a new ' challenge of still life. This swift journey has caught all that goes on. One might well point to classes in Chemistry, Physical Education, and Math, or even to the offices of the guidance counselors, where individual conferences are going on. ■ ' ■ 4 5 A Somerset Day Ends With . . The end of a school clay at Somerset presents an entirely different scene. Classrooms are empty, buses are loading up, cars are leaving, hut the day at SHS is far from over. The as¬ sorted squeaks and tootles of musical instruments pervade the music room as the Blue Raider Marching Band prepares to practice for its upcoming half-time show. From the playing Fields, depending upon the season, comes the sharp, shrill sound of an umpire’s whistle, the clean crack of a bat, the fat thud of a punt, the muffled groans of players, and the intent cries of onlookers. Still elsewhere, a faculty meeting is being held and the Breeze staff is busily gathering and writing news. Finally, as the day falls into darkness, and the fields and rooms are lifeless, a Somerset dav is over. J . v -1 - . i ; 6 7 8 When you arc old and grav and full of sleep. And nodding 1 the fire, take down this hook. And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; now many toyed your moments ot glad grace. And loved your beauty with love false or true; But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you. And loved the sorrows of your changing face. And bending down beside the glow¬ ing bars. Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. lJfli m . ► - | . - • -1 - - 9 The 1971 Man It is with great pride in a faithful teacher that we j dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Harvey Alden. English teacher. Those who have been a part of his classes will ( never forget his perseverance and willingness to teach even those who take school less seriously than they should. He is a systematic educator. We are thankful for the way in which he apportions his time so that a maximum of drilling in all the essentials of learning English takes place. His capacity as an English teacher does not end in the classroom, for he is equally effi¬ cient in preparing transcripts and student character summaries for those going on to higher education. During his few leisure hours away from Somerset High, he avidly follows the stocks as a licensed broker, and once in a while he manages to get in some fishing. But whether he be teaching, following the stocks, or fishing, ’’The 1971 Man’’ performs all with the same steady gentleness, perseverance, and dedication that has endeared him to all who know him. 11 Principal Carl W. A variety of person¬ alities exist, each involved in his own field, each with his own style of teaching, yet there is one very strong similarity; each likes to see ideas lodge, take root, and flourish in the students ' minds. This is the faculty. 16 i • 17 i ' MR. AUDETTE MR. BARRAR MR. BERNARDO MRS. BREZINSKI MR. BREZINSKI MR. BURNS MRS. CARON MR. CHAUVETTE MR. CORCORAN 18 MRS. CORREA MR. CROUCH MR. CUCINOTTA MRS. Perhaps across some mighty sea. In years ahead, I won’t know where I’ll be. Perhaps I’ll travel the world care free! In the days ahead which are long and far. My pride I will try not to mar. People pressure me for answers hut I have none. Only way left is to follow the sun. I ' ll follow it till I see down. Then I will look around and everyone will be gone. This might give me the answers of life. For I cannot Find them on the end of a knife. It stands to reason, life cannot last forever. And all your lines of reality you cannot sever. Don’t cop out on things you disapprove of Just because the answers lie ABOVE! Someday I will Find this place of mine. There everyone will be happy. The sun will shine. So now I file my final plea For there must be a somewhere for me! Paul W. Ferris i DEBORAH ANNE AGRELLA Nickname: Deb Listen, or thy tongue will keep thee deaf. — American Indian Proverb. The 1970 Girls Field Hockey team was a com¬ bination of high spirits, competitive skills and the finest defense in the Bristol County Girls League. For this team, the most important game of the sea¬ son was played against Westport. Both teams played an excellent gdme; however, when the dust had cleared, Somerset was the loser by one goal Captained by seniors Bonny Marehand and Kathy Johnston, Miss Fitzgerald’s team, in an eight game series, tied Westport for second place. They closed out the season with a 3-4-1 record. The Big Blue Machine” went undefeated in Narry Competition. In late October, the team entered the state meet in Boston, where the Raiders finished second in their class. The team’s top men — Lusier, Pyatt, Gartner, Griffo, and Mullen — placed in the Narry League’s top ten. In fact, Lussier went undefeated in Narry competition. Much of the credit for this excellence should go to Mr. Bernardo, who has coached the team since its conception in 1965. The only setbacks were the season’s opener with Dartmouth and the traditional Thanks¬ giving rival. Case. Like the past teams, the 1970 Raiders were small in size but quick. Somerset had an excellent offensive line and an exceptionally quick back field. The offense, which was probably the best in the area, scored an average of 26 points a game. Somerset’s defense was tough to score against; on the average, it held opponents to 10 points a game. In addition, the All-Narry Football Team was dominated with five Somerset players. . • LE COMTE’S DAIRY 500 Wood Street Somerset, Massachusetts Scores Opponent Somerset Dartmouth 20 0 Portsmouth 0 39 Seekonk 6 22 Old Rochester 0 44 Stoughton 12 32 Wareham 6 28 Dighton-Rehoboth 0 32 Case 32 28 : Sponsor: IMPERIAL GLASS INCORPORATED 321 King Street Fall River, Massachusetts 95 Sponsor: SO. The opening win over Dartmouth was the prelude to a very exciting season for the Somerset hoopsters. Under the tuto¬ rage of Coach Ray McDonald, the Blue and White finished their hoop campaign with a most respectable fourteen and two record in Narry play; eighteen and two overall. Outstanding for the Raiders this banner year were the all- around performances of senior tri-captains Denny Jew, Bill Barrar, and Ray Kowalski with important contributions being made to the team’s playing by squad members Bruce Emmet and Drew Cummings. First of all, Jew was a vital cog in the wheel of fortune for the team as he displayed great playmak¬ ing, good defense and scoring ability. In addition, highest in¬ dividual scoring honors went to Jew when he scored twenty- seven points in a single game. Speedster Barrar, unrelenting Kowalski, rebounding Cummings, and fast-running Emmet sparked us to many a victory. Highlighting the season for the varsity five were the vic¬ tories over Connolly and Case, but perhaps the most enjoyed victory was the finale over Holy Family. The Raiders of Somerset and the Warriors of Seekonk tied for the Narry League Crown with the Falcons of Dighton-Rehoboth posing a major threat to the Co¬ champs. Unfortunately, however, the 1971 trackmen lacked the depth of previous years and were edged out of repeating as both the Narry Relay Champs and the Narry Meet Champs. Their Narry League record of 5-1 and overall rec¬ ord of 6-4 is not indicative of their successful season. And her hair such a blackened brilliance; I know that she’s mv kind. The many times she ' s made me happy, I can never say. J What I know is that I need that girl. Forever and a day. The color of white cream. Now I’ve awakened, I realize it was all a dream. Ah, William Shakespeare, what fools These mortals he!!!” THE SPIDER I stare at the spider on the wall. Doesn ' t he have any sense at all? Up and down the wall each day. Always work, and never play. Weaving his web ever so fine, While in the darkness Slender threads with shine. Weaving and sewing. Spin! Turn! Won’t that spider ever learn? Life is what he makes of it; Making designs in his fine knit. But he cannot go on like this. Think of all the fun he does miss. But today I seem him on the wall again. And he has little spiders, almost ten. So there is a moral to this poem. We can say: Weave a web a day and you still have time to play. 169 PROM NIGHT There’s a warm summer breeze, whirling all around. And its whisper through the trees is the only sound. The people are gathering around the entrance door, With flashbulbs and cameras, like so many times before. You make last minute adjustments on your hair and dress. Look in the rearview mirror and say, I must look a mess.” But he tells you in his kindest way, That you have never looked more beautiful than today. Finally, he opens the door to call you on. And you walk arm in arm through the June night’s calm. The cameras will be flashing as you both walk by; Some people will be smiling while others will cry. But you will be a heavenly body in a starlit sky, And your gown’s diamond brilliance will make others die. And he in his tuxedo of black, white, or blue Will make you proud; you will make him proud too. Together you enter with heads up high. And as they snap your picture, you try not to cry. Then you think of all the friends you might not see. If only you knew the future! If only you had the key! Just think! Four years have gone by so fast! Things that once were dear are now in the past. But always remember the good things, never the bad. Because good makes you happy; bad makes you sad. Music plays softly as you glide along the floor. Your arms hold someone you really adore. Someone you needed and wanted all along, To fill the lyrics and music of your song. Time, it seems, is getting short for you now. And the prom began as it was getting through. But you know as I do your life has just begun. Because after this night, you are a woman. 170 THE SHACK I know a place where I can go. Where troubles can not find me.
