■ Somerset High School Somerset, Massachusetts Zhe Kaider 1969 Laugh and be merry together, like brothers akin, Guesting a while in the rooms of a beautiful inn— Glad till the dancing stops, and the life of music ends Laugh till the game is played; and be merry, my friends. 2 4 5 6 7 foreword Somerset High School has had a different meaning for each of us. In our four years here, we have each undergone individual ex¬ periences. Each of us has been challenged and each of us has accepted the challenge in a different way. From academic, athletic, extra¬ curricular, and social endeavors; from invalu¬ able relationships with faculty and fellow stu¬ dents; from ceremony and informality; from our very presence here at Somerset High. School, we have drawn our education. We have many experiences in common, many moments to share as memories. Within the covers of this book we have run the gamut from the turned on, tuned in” side of high school life to the studious, serious side. What we have been, what we are, and what we will be may be somewhere on these pages. Read this book carefully. It is a special record of your last years in high school. It is a record of many people involved in many things. Each one is involved, and no one is important by himself, for a yearbook is a rec¬ ord of many, a record of a school—and it is people who make up a school. 8 9 ;Dedication The Class of 1969 respectfully salutes Mr. William Barrar as the teacher to whom we dedicate the 1969 Raider. He has reached many of us with his sincere interest as teacher and friend, whether it was in a social studies class, driver education class, or just in passing during a regular school day. For his dedication and sincerity, we bestow on him in return this dedication, and with this selective honor, we extend our wishes for many more years of health and success that he may continue to serve the many students who pass through Somerset High. ) 10 II Zhe Raider Staff Editors GERTRUDE WILKINS EUGENE WILLIAMS Advisors GEORGE PONTES RUTH B. S. 28 I Champs ’68 Led by several promising juniors—pitchers, Mike Klek and Dave Pierce, and fielders, Larry Thomas and Steve Benevides the ’68 Varsity squad was able to shout jubilantly, We’re number one!’’ at the close of a fruitful Narry League season and a 5-0 pre-season schedule. For the second time in a row, the Raiders, who incidently had the highest team batting average in the league (.272) reached the semi-finals of the Eastern Massachusetts Class B baseball tournament. With about half of the team returning next year and with several promising members of the JV team advancing into the varsity ranks, Somerset can look forward to another very successful sea son in 1969- VarSltlJ p fon( p ow; q, Dewsnap, J. Led by Co¬ captains Joann Doyle and Linda Fish, the team finished the season with a 6-2 record, placing them in the runner-up position. The spirit, sportsmanship, and determination in¬ stilled in the players by Coach Corcoran urged them on to success both at practice and at the games. Although this was the final year for many of the starting players, the group of underclassmen who follow will surely carry on in the same spirit next year. Front Row: D. Paine, D. Seaman, M. A few selected performances by the orchestra were Overture in A Minor and The Dalton Set. Among the pieces played by the concert band were some well known marches of John Philip Sousa. The concert choir sang three folk songs dating back to Johannes Brahms, and also two tradi¬ tional spirituals. Assisting the concert choir in Jabberwocky was the Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School brass choir. A highlight of the concert was the presenta¬ tion of a gift of appreciation to music instructor Miss Marta Biondi who in June 1968 left Somer¬ set to resume teaching in New Hampshire. 34 35 j Ukx 36 37 Seniors ' Dim ’68 Sharing some last moments in laughter and gaiety, the graduating class of 1968 attended their senior banquet at White’s on June 5, 1968. Performing one of his final tasks as Class Presi¬ dent was toastmaster Louis Benevides. Highlighting this event as entertainers were some of the well known members of the class, and of course, the dedication of The Raider 1968 to teacher and coach, Robert F. Souza. 39 Graduation ’68 On June 12, 1968, graduation was held once again in the gym¬ nasium, newly renovated and ex¬ panded. To the strains of Pomp and Circumstance, Larry Thomas, President of the Junior Class, led the graduates of ’68 in procession. Once ceremonies got underway, Seniors, Jonathan Greenburg and Frederick Cichon, delivered their commencement addresses. 40 , Carousel On that cool summer evening, June 14, 1968, pretty Diane Nois- eaux was chosen queen of The carousel’’ with Linda Pelletier and Carol Wycislak as her court. Only hours before, the junior art com¬ mittee, headed by Susan Augusto and supervised by Mr. White, had completed their painstaking prep¬ arations for the prom, the first to be held in the new cafeteria at the high school. Set to the theme of Carousel,” the prom was beautifully carried out by having a miniature carousel, colorful garden scenery, and a multitude of flowers, all adding up to a panoramic evening of color and entertainment. 42 43 44 Dedications Seniors—You’ll Never Walk Alone Juniors—Riding Along on a Carousel Faculty—Carousel Waltz Mr. Kaylor— What’s the Use of Wond’rin’ Miss Mason—Soliloquy Miss Nenna—If I Loved You Mr. White— When the Children Are Asleep Committee Chairman Decorations Susan Augusto Maureen Nobrega Refreshments Carol Morris Susan Arruda Programs Invitations, Favors Janice Feno Tickets and Publicity Sandra Mello Props Larry Proc Danny Nordeste Bobby LeComte j 45 t Jail ’6$ M S.Ji.S 46 47 48 In 1968, the Raiders compiled an impressive 6-2-1 record en route to second place in the Narry League. Led by All-Narry” co-captain Larry- Thomas and sophomore Ray Kowalski, the Raiders scored 161 points in 9 games while allowing 78 points to their opponents. The Raiders were strongly disappointed by a 13-12 upset by Old Rochester which cost them the league championship. In this game, four Rai der touchdowns were disallowed because of penalties. But the team swept the remaining four games of their season’s schedule. This in¬ cluded two shut-outs and a victory over Case which brought the 49’ers trophy back to Somerset, the real home of the trophy. . VARSITY TEAM: F. Raposa. R. Paul, J. Costa, D. Honored the day before at the annual Case Rally, these seventeen football players had only one thing in mind— bring back the 49’ers Trophy by beating Case High. Beat Case they did! A crowd of five thousand looked on and saw Case score the first and the last touchdown of the game, but they also saw Somerset’s Ray Kowalski score three touchdowns and Tom McDermott kick the point which proved to be the deciding edge of Somerset’s 19-18 victory. A jubilant Somer¬ set team left Hanson Memorial Field that after¬ noon, and perhaps happiest of all was Coach James Sullivan who saw the 49’ers Trophy come back to Somerset for the sixth time in seven years. 61 Cross Country This season proved to be a very successful one for the cross country team. High¬ lighting the team’s 5-7 season was its recognition as a varsity team in the Narry League. Juniors Francis Brough and Bob Mullen, who consistently finished first and second in many meets, received letters and gold medals for their accomplishments. The opposition will definitely have to look out for Somerset next year considering several of the Raiders’ meets were lost by only small margins and also considering the majority of the team will be returning next year. For the fourth straight year, the girls’ field hockey team won the crown in the Bristol County League. Through a combination of determination, ex¬ perience, and potential both at prac¬ tice and in games, how could they be anything less than champions. Victory was the aim of the players as they met each opponent, averaging two goals a game and compiling a record of 8 wins, 3 ties, and no losses. Varsity i Kneeling: Rezendes, H. Kineavy, S. B. What Is ORBIT? “What is ORBIT?” This ques¬ tion has been asked many times and has received no answer until recently. On November 16, 1968, the ORganization for a Better Image of Teenagers, nicknamed ORBIT, was formed in Somerset under the adult supervision of Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Stewart. The main purpose of this new youth group is to prove that teenagers aren’t all bad, and to get the youth of today involved and aware of things that are happening in their world. A car wash sponsored by OR¬ BIT on November 30, was held at the Stop Shop parking lot. The proceeds, $90, will be used to support a needy child over¬ seas. Approximately $170, made at a Food Sale, January 25, will also go to support this child. Since the last meeting, two future projects have been voted on. Planned for March is the play “Blithe Spirit” and for the summer, a carnival is in the making. The money raised from these projects will go to charit- ah 1p nriranl7Qfinnc 118 Keep Somerset High Jn Zke Hews ?°°Tl A t Co ' f S ’ °fa s y °‘«« tiQle at S S n W e , S es Pe g ° to ' ®4t t c ‘ali, ' etfl er Pt4 ?s fi V. Homeriet . Jiiahli l 9 ‘ By Sue Turcotte Hi! Lovely weather we’ve been having. . .1 trust everyone has taken advantage of our extra fun days. But l fear most of us enjoyed an exciting snowbound vacation. Of course, there are always the daring few wno will venture out into the big city. One word of caution to those who have not seen their drive¬ ways or sidewalks lately: beware of innocent-looking shovelers and stair sweepers - they have a monopoly on the white stuff and are threatening to unionize. If anyone cares for a bit of Somerset High School Somerset, Massachusetts 120 Zhe flew Somerset 122 I High In September, 1968, the doors of the new addition to Som¬ erset High were opened. Students adjusted quickly to the strange surroundings and became familiar with the auditorium, planetarium, language lab, and new offices by March 9, 1969, when the addition was officially dedicated. « ..la— . The new, spacious art room is in constant use; overhead projectors are an effective part of teaching in all departments; science labs are now situated closer to other main classrooms; and courses in graphic arts, electronics, and metal shop are now part of the curriculum. With tne expansion of Hanson Memorial Gymnasium have come additional faculty members and more physical education facilities. The physical education staff encourages participation in gymnastics and the intramural program which offers flag football, basketball, weight lifting, folk dancing, and softball. -•is: 126 The courtyard, the auditorium, the language lab, and the health room are all part of the new addition. Perhaps best of all (although not shown here) is the cafeteria, which inter¬ ests the entire student body about noon time daily. No matter where one’s interests lie, Somerset High trys to satisfy interests and avocations whether they be in the field of music, in home economics, or in astronomy. For the avid reader and the hard¬ working scholar, we have an excellent library that is growing tre¬ mendously in volume content. 132 Christmas Vespers of 1968 was held on Sunday afternoon on December fifteenth. The Girls’ Glee, directed by Mr. Maggs, opened the program with the Ceremony of Carols,’’ including a solo by senior Marilyn Neher. Following their performance, Mr. Maggs conducted the concert choir in his first concert direction at Somerset High. Under the direction of Mr. Stackpole, the Wind ensemble played modern compositions such as Joio’s Variants on a Medieval Tune,’’ which is based on a traditional Christmas song. These modern selections made the vespers pro¬ gram a truly different musical experience. 133 yt v • f £g i pip -V.. w ' 134 Raider Power A contingency of three seniors, four juniors, and four sophomores donned the blue and white of Somerset High. At the beginning of the season with only one varsity starter returning, the Raid¬ ers were labeled a fair Jay Vee team just moving into the varsity ranks. But, the Raiders showed that they were a team to be reckoned with, now and in the future, by capturing third place in the Narry League with a 10-6 league record and a 3-1 non-league record. What the Raiders lacked in height they made up for by their good shooting; what they lacked in experience, they made up for by their relentless ball¬ hawking defense. To the opposition we can only say, Watch out for Somer¬ set in 69-70. The Raiders have ex¬ perience, ability, and confidence—and what more could you ask for?” 135 Zke Varsity Front Row : W. Led by high-scoring, fast-moving Captain Beth Connors, both of¬ fensive and defensive units were noted for their forcefulness and organization. They scored a record of 9 wins and 3 losses. The J.V. team displayed these same qualities of excellent sportsmanship when scrimmaging their opponents. They finished their season with an 8-3 record. Kneeling: L. Borges, S. I do not wish to be kept a citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed.—I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia.—I will not trade freedom for beneficence, not my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to think and act for myself; enjoy the benefits of my crea¬ tions and to face the world boldly and say, this I have done. All this is what it means to be an American. (from the Sept. 1968 issue of the Coast Guard Reservist.) This space courtesy of Fred Hutchinson, Class of 1965 .
