SOMERSET PUBLIC LIBRARY SO MERSET. MA 02726 Somerset Migh School Somerset, Massachusetts Zhe Raider 1968 I 2 V foreword Our moments at Somerset have varied from the serious to the absurd, from the tedious to the pleasurable, and from the disap¬ pointing to the joyous. Though the true life of our school cannot be expressed in words, nor our senti¬ ments captured in phrases, we of The Raider staff hope to convey the essence of our life at Somerset through pictures of the common and uncommon occurrences that have made up our high school years. 3 Somerset Stands and Zhe Raider Mooes Mood. Most of us know him as a history teacher who, armed with his trusty box of mints, just does not teach history quite like anyone else. Many of us know him as the football coach who likes to think he is calling the big play for the Giants. Some of us know him as a “hacker” on the golf course and a “killer” in the hockey games at the marsh. But all of us in the Class of ’68 know Mr. Robert F. Souza for what he really is—a man who is not easily forgotten. Mr. Kobert 3. Souza Superintendent Stands fj. Pennant contenders right down to the wire, the baseball team finished in sec¬ ond place in the Narry League with a strong 10-4 mark. The Raiders also earned respect with their fine showing in the Southeastern Massachusetts Baseball Tournament. Paced by captain Morgan Biastoff, who was second in the league in hitting with a .396 average, the Raiders got top-notch pitching from Roland Chagnon and Steve Borden, clutch hitting from Charley Fisher and Larry Thomas, and tough defensive play from Lou Benevides and Bob Ber¬ geron. With most of last year’s squad return¬ ing and with strong help coming up from Coach Sousa’s successful J.V. team, Coach Sullivan’s varsity crew should find them¬ selves right in the thick of the pennant fight. High in spirit and cooperation, the girls continued their winning ways to finish the season with a league record of 8 wins and no losses. The season was topped off by victory in the four-team Narry Meet held at Dighton-Reho- both. With one exception, the track team was com¬ posed entirely of underclassmen. Highlights in¬ cluded “triples” by Alan Walker and Jim Franco and a new school record in the shotput set by Kenny Day. Russ Bazinet and Jeff Batt in the pole vault, Rich Vickrey in the discus, and runners Jim Laughren, Mike Bettencourt, Preston Hender¬ son, and Bob Connors were among other juniors who helped pace the team to its undefeated record. With nearly the entire squad returning, Coach White can expect another strong season in track this year. Kenny Day gets set. 29 An important meeting of state. The smallest country in the world—the Duchy of Grand Fenwick ... a stolen wine label ... a queen worried about her people ... a Fenwickian military leader with 16th century weapons and 20th cen¬ tury ambitions . . . These characters and situations are part of an enjoyable, pointedly satirical comedy. As always, the Dramatic Club, coached by Mr. Ward, worked hard and gave a commendable performance. The cast, with mixed emotions, at the end of a successful production. A forceful declaration of war. The Fenwickian force attacks New York City. L 31 32 ... And God said, “That’s Good.” Jane Johnson sings folk. The Rambling Raiders go Dixie. 33 34 Spring Concert ’67 On June 1, 1967, the Spring Concert was presented under the direction of Mr. Stackpole, Miss Biondi, and Miss Hezelt on. Through the cooperative efforts of the three conductors, a most delightful concert echoed throughout the auditorium. With variety in performances and selec¬ tions, the concert moved effectively from beginning to end. The concert opened with the first public performance of the String Ensemble under the direction of Miss Bion¬ di. The orchestra followed with a vigorous interpretation of “Russian Sailor’s Dance” Equally effective and highly entertaining was the informal performance of Dixieland by the Ramblin’ Raiders. For a more serious note, Edith Katon played a piano concerto, and Jane Johnson shortly after charmed the audience with folk songs. One of the highlights of the program was “The Creation”, sung by the Concert Choir and narrated by Mr. George Pontes. Not to be outdone was the Concert Band with its brilliant rendition of the contemporary “Overture in B Flat”, a stirring conclusion to the concert and a just success for Mr. Stackpole’s first year as music director of Somerset High School. 35 36 Senior banquet On the evening of June 7, 1967, the Senior Banquet for the Class of ’67 was held at White’s. An unusual evening of entertainment was provided by talented members of the senior class. Later in the evening, the dedication of the yearbook was revealed to the seniors, and a grateful Mr. Sullivan accepted the honor of the dedication. MR. EDWARD L. SULLIVAN 37 Mr. Kilgrew, Mr. Allen, Mr. Kaylor, Rev. Waldron 38 ' . Graduation Probably the saddest and happiest occa¬ sion of the school year, graduation, took place on the evening of June 14, 1967. Junior class president Jay Jew served as grand marshal while the Class of ’67 marched into the Junior High School Audi¬ torium to the sound of “Pomp and Circum¬ stance.’’ The graduation prayer was given by Rev. Waldron, and the guest speaker of the evening was Mr. Everett S. Allen. Sen¬ iors Pat DeMarco and Tina Iadicola de¬ livered original and inspiring speeches as food for thought for the future. 41 :. m ym 1 1 39 ' 4 7 f I Kingdom Under the Sea “Kingdom Under the Sea,” the 1967 Junior-Senior Prom, took place June 9 in the Junior High School cafeteria. As the scene of the first prom in years to be held outside of Somerset’s gymnasium, the Jun¬ ior High proved to be a wonderful setting. Under the direction of Mr. White, the art supervisor, and co-chairmen Charlene Mills and Sally Gell, the entire room, the sur¬ rounding corridors, and the patio were transformed into a charming underwater kingdom. 41 Prom Queen Sue Mayes Sue Hayes and Gerald Shahdan SUE Diane Verros and Michael Monahan Cheryl Quental and Ken Root V I Court Maidens for Queen Sue 42 43 J U til MU ’67 Sports Seniors Vespers basketball School jCife 44 45 Kick-Off Dance 67 Swings Aboard ‘ ‘Wig Mamie 1 ' 46 . . . In the mud and rain the Raiders lost again, by a score of 22 to 8. But in this game, as in all the games all season long, they never quit trying—with guts, desire, and de¬ termination—to pull out a win. The ’67 Raiders deserve to be remembered just for that. ... and the rains came. 58 r Hard Season for ’67 Seniors On Thanksgiving, twenty-two Somerset seniors took to the field for the last time in Blue Raider uniforms. For them, it had been the kind of season they would like to forget. After an 8-1 record a year ago, the ’67 Raiders met defeat head on this year. Their record dropped to 2-7. And what made those losses so frustrating was that they could easily have been victories with just a little luck. But, luck was always riding on the other bench. 59 Cross-Country Coach Bernardo and Captain Laughren. Zhe Zeani Front Row: J. Batt, L. Hebert, D. Trudeau, J. Laugh¬ ren, G. Perr r , J. Feno, S. Undefeated in league games, they finished their schedule with a record of six wins and no losses. Led by co-captains Joanne Doyle and Maureen McDermott, the girls also held a formidable record in non¬ league games, with a record of three wins, one tie, and one loss. With Coach Corcoran’s superior coaching ability, the girls completed their season with plays at RIC, in which they won two games. Also, Joanne Doyle, Moe McDermott, and Beth Connors were chosen for the All-Star team. Jield Hockey 1967 Coach Corcoran with Co-Captains Joanne Doyle and Moe McDermott. Front Row: L. Fish, D. The program opened with organ music accompanying a reading of The Christ¬ mas Story (Luke 2:1-14) by Principal Edward J. Kaylor. The Brass Choir per¬ formed several traditional carols and Canzon Septimi Toni by Giovanni Gab¬ rieli for which the choir was split into two groups playing from opposite sides of the auditorium. Mrs. Carol Desrosi- ers conducted the Girls Glee with sen¬ ior Susan Vincent singing a solo part. Under the direction of Mr. Stack- pole, the Concert Choir and Orchestra augmented by adult and student musi¬ cians from Somerset, Fall River, and Fairhaven, performed Vivaldi’s monu¬ mental Gloria in D Major. The church¬ like orchestrations and Latin verses lent a proper religious tone to the 1967 Christmas season I 14 115 I Senior Semi- Jo rmill Caugkter, Soft eights, and Music I 16 w mmmm L vji - w, A rnmr u ■ Wl jt« - Jr jf|g r«r aIL v - p W” • rl rv % Wm WjTT m (j jpt v jfPLr y 118 Basketball Captain Junior and Coach Senior. After a slow start, the basketball team caught fire at midseason and finished with a solid 8-6 record and a tie for third place in the Narry League. Coach Burns’ squad hustled and made the clutch plays all season long, even though the team lacked overall size and depth. Larry Thomas, with a 16 point average, and Kevin McGee, with a 13 point average, were among the top scorers in the league. The playmaking of Lou Benevides and Bob Bergeron and the shoot¬ ing and rebounding of Tom Burns and Jay Jew were also plus points in the Raider season. The J.V.’s under Coach White also finished with a successful 10-4 record. Up-and-coming “stars” like Rick Doublas, Ray Kowalski, and Bill Wrobleski promise more solid hoop sea¬ sons for Somerset. Compiling a record of 9 wins and 3 losses in the league and an overall record of 10 wins and 4 losses, the girls repeatedly amazed their opponents with their bustling and superior ball handling. Their record, however, does not reflect their most important qualities. Their spirit was always high. Miss Corcoran and the girls must be commended for their superior sportsmanship qualities and winning ways which are typical of the “Somerset athlete.” 125 fou ' re a good loser if you can grip the winner ' s hand . . . The various groups and organiza¬ tions at Somerset H ' gh School are an integral part of school life. All perform a specific function, whether it be en¬ joyment, entertainment, or perform¬ ance of a service. As a member of any one of the many groups, a student learns to cooperate with others to achieve a common goal while also finding enjoyment and satisfaction in participation.
