Memoirs 1967 Somerset High Somerset, Massachusetts Dedication In appreciation of his unceasing efforts in planning, advising, and administering un¬ selfishly for the benefit of the schools and the students of Somerset, the Class of 1967 sincerely dedicates the thirtieth edition of Memoirs to Mr. Edward L. Sullivan, our Director of Guidance. In some way, every student who passes through Somerest High benefits from Mr. Sul¬ livan’s efforts to assist in and promote the attainment of the academic and vocational pur¬ suits of each. His desire to foster an appetite for learn¬ ing and to instill an appreciation of knowledge in all students, in accordance with their respective goals, is reflected in his consistent efforts to pro¬ vide an effective summer session schedule. There¬ fore, it is with sincere pride that we dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Sullivan. MR. Life has loveliness to sell— All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Climbing fire that sways and sings, And children’s faces looking up Holding wonder like a cup. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost, For one white singing hour of peace, Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstasy Give all you have been or could be. 9 foreword Through the wonders of photography, we have tried to capture and record the most intrinsic part of S.H.S.—its people—in hopes of conveying to all who read our book a complete picture of life at Somerset Higlj. We hope that Memoirs XXX will present a true picture of what a yearbook should be—an annual that focuses not only on the graduating seniors, but also on the underclassmen, the faculty, and the special events and activities which are so basic to a living school body. The Memoirs staff hopes that while leafing through these pages at some future date, you will be reminded of some of the best years of your life and of the people who made them so. Although faced with many unexpected problems, the young Raider team showed initiative, sportsmanship, and spirit as Coach Sullivan led them to a third place tie in a tight Narry pennant race. With many of the starting nine return¬ ing and with the return of a good pitching staff, the ’67 Raiders are sure to make their presence felt as pennant contenders. 22 Randy Chung Larry Velozo Bill Agrella Kerry Dean junior Varsity First Row: J. The Raiders competed in the Bristol Scholastic Golf League’s western division, which is comprised from the area’s larger schools. Coach Sandomierski guided the team to a suc¬ cessful 3-7-2 record against more experienced teams. It was a happy first season for the team and the coach. J. Zacamy J. Silvia J. Donnelly G. Boule J. The champions, who boast an average of about 13 runs per game, took command of the league and held the number one position throughout the season. Miss Corcoran, the coach, and Captain Peg Hunt led the team to success. Supporting the team in key positions were Pam Driscoll, Sandy Curt, Pat Cyr, and Pat DeMarco. The 1966 volleyball team, led by co-captains Kathy Lennon and Kathy Goodwin, finished the season in the runnerup position in the league. Again, Coach Corcoran guided the team to a strong record of 9-2. VOLLEYBALL Front Row: L. Brisebois C. Spanick P. Hunt K. Lennon K. Goodwin M. Lennon L. Lecompte Back Row: Miss Corcoran P. DeMarco P. With Mr. White as coach, Jerry Fletchqr, John Soares, and Bill Kaylor were tri-captains for a season that was highlighted by the breaking of two school track records. Jerry Fletcher pole vaulted 12 feet to es¬ tablish a new school record. In the shot put, John Soares bettered the old shot put mark by tossing 44 feet 6 inches. Highly productive pointwise, many juniors helped make this a successful year. Charlie Santerre and John Pettine throwing the javelin, Bill Dionne in shot put and Jack Thornton and Moe DeCotret in sprinting and high jump were all high scorers. With these athletes as its back¬ bone, the 1967 team should compile another fine record. 26 Jack and Moe get edge on relay. 27 Zhe Happiest Days of ]four Cife! Under the direction of Mr. Ward, the Dramatic Club presented a three act comedy, The Happiest Days of Your Life”, on March 25, 1966. In error, orders from the Ministry of Devacuation state that a boys’ and girls’ school are to occupy the same premises. Neither school is aware that the other student body is of the opposite sex. The result is nothing but mass confusion and chaos—a truly delightful, comic situation. Lucille Hamel and Wayne Bardsley executed commendable per¬ formances, and of course, Bruce McFarland was superb with his non¬ chalance. The entire cast supplied an enjoyable evening of theater with all proceeds benefiting the Citizen’s Scholarship Fund. Kneeling: Elaine Silvia, Edward Phelan. Sitting: Priscilla Hager man, Lucille Hamel, Wayne Bardsley. Standing: Jeffery Russell, Stephen Rebello, Sarah Grusmark, George Barrowclough, Cathy Rollins, Gail Sullivan, Bruce McFarland, William Bochinski. l Mt ' •v L 1 FW MMt . ; 1 L V r j M AW i 1 29 Spring Concert Under the direction of music supervisor, Paul Gayzagian and Miss Nathalie Hezelton, director of Girls’ Glee, the music organizations pre¬ sented their annual spring concert. The program began with an or¬ chestra selection of Mozart, Diver¬ timento, K.270. The male chorus selections included The Wiffenpouf Song and There Is Nothing Like a Dame. The old time, sentimental songs, One Hand, One Heart and Goodnight My Someone, were pre¬ sented by Girls’ Glee. The mixed chorus concluded the program with You’ll Never Walk Alone and se¬ lections from The Sound of Music. This was an especially mean¬ ingful concert for everyone present because it was the last to be pre¬ sented under the direction of Mr. Gayzagian. After sixteen years of dedicated service in the Somerset schools, he reluctantly left the com¬ munity in which he had gained so many friends to accept a greater professional challenge at Lowell State College. 30 Somerset in Rhythm! 1966 Senior Banquet The Senior Class of 1966 held their banquet at White’s on June 8, 1966, with Class President Thomas Paine acting as toastmaster. The Mem¬ oirs co-editors Marsha Belcher and Joy Vandgrift read the class will and an¬ nounced the dedication of Memoirs ’66 to a very surprised and happy Mr. Charles P. Leary. A special dedication of the first supplement of the school was announced at this time. It was dedicated to Mr. Paul Gayzagian, Di¬ rector of Music at the Somerset Schools. 9 graduation ’66 On June fifteenth, commencement exercises for the graduating class of 1966 were held in the Memorial Gym. After the entrance march to Pomp and Circumstance, the seniors and the audi¬ ence were seated and the invocation was delivered by Rev. Alden Burhoe. The two senior speakers were Sarah Gras- mark and Joy Vandgrift. Dr. Paul van K. Thomson, Vice-President of Providence Col¬ lege, was the guest speaker of the evening. He addressed the audience on The Responsibilities of Citizenship”. Despite the hu¬ midity, the program ran smoothly, quickly, and pleasantly. 33 1966 {junior-Senior Prom On June 17, 1966, the junior-senior prom, I Could Have Danced All Night”, was held in the gaily decorated Memorial Gymnasium. Through the combined efforts of Mr. White, art supervisor, and the co- chairmen of the prom, Kathy Doyle and Edie Katon, the gym was transformed into a beautiful London street scene, complete with park, sparkling pools of water, and quaint little shops. The evening was filled with dancing to the music of A1 Rainone’s orchestra, but the highlight of the evening was the selection of the queen. After some suspenseful mo¬ ments, the judges selected Terry Irla to reign as Queen of the Prom”, and they selected Valerie Martin and Susan Joynt to serve as her court maidens. 34 1966 football Coach Sullivan and Captains Agrella and Pettine First Row: Coach Tavares, R. Henderson, D. Lecomte, S. Herndon, L. Thomas. On Thanksgiving Day 1966, the Somerset Blue Raiders highlighted an 8 win—1 loss record by tip¬ ping traditional rival Case of Swansea 14 to 12. This ended a season which gave the Raiders the first championship of the new Narry Football League with a 4-0 slate. This excellent season performance was led by the senior squad members. A good running and passing game balanced a powerful high scoring offense with a tough defensive unit that was very stingy in giving up points and yardage to any opponents. During practice sessions as well as on game days, the seniors’ spirit and teamwork influenced the group as a whole and made it what it was, a true cham¬ pionship team. 38 DATE PLACE SOMERSET HIGH RAIDERS 1966 Football Schedule TEAM PI Seekonk_Home Oliver Ames_Away Old Rochester_Away Falmouth_Home Bristol_Home Canton_Away Mansfield_Away Dighton-Rehoboth_Away _Home THEY 50 0 16 14 14 7 6 14 22 6 20 14 20 6 38 0 14 12 Front: R. Seniors, juniors, and sopho¬ mores went all out to plan their skits and to decorate the gym¬ nasium. If ever there was a year that made the judges cringe at the thought of having to make a final decision, this was it. But, judges will be judges, and points will be points. And according to the way the points came out, it was the juniors who won with their sensation¬ al Charlie Brown skit. Some¬ how, it seemed a crime to take down the excellent decorations after their being on display for less than an hour, but the rally was over and it was the game which lay ahead that had to be the first concern of every¬ one. Incidentally, we won the game! Above — Zke jubilant juniors! Zo the left and below — eandids of the Seniors and the Sophomores during their skits. Vie „Annual Mattie On Thanksgiving Day of 1966, the Somerset Blue Raiders and the Case Cardinals of Swansea met to decide two important questions: Would Somerset be the Narry League champions, and would Somerset be able to beat Case for the fifth consecutive year? In what was one of the most ex¬ citing and one of the closest games of the season for both squads, the favored Raiders came out on top with a 14 to 12 margin. This win gave Somerset undis¬ puted possession of first place as the first champions of the new Narry Foot¬ ball League. It also marked the fifth suc¬ cessive year that Somerset came away from the annual game with the 49’ers trophy, the symbol of supremacy in the long standing rivalry between Case and Somerset. Coming away with the tro¬ phy was an especially happy event for the Raiders because it climaxed a sea¬ son of 8 wins and only 1 loss. Zke Champs ’66 The girls’ field hockey team of ’66 had one of the most successful seasons in the history of field hockey at Somerset High. Miss Corcoran’s Raiderettes were invincible as proved by their 8-0 sweep of the Bristol County Girls’ League. The three-year veteran co-captains, Pat DeMarco and Sandy Curt, ran the team from their center back and center forward control positions. Backing up the whole team was the other three-year veteran, Tina Iadicola, whose dependable and never-flinching agil¬ ity in the goal cage saved many a game for the team. The defense was sparked by Pam Driscoll who was always on hand to make that all important save. Of course, Sue Joynt was somewhat the unsung hero of the team. She was always steady in her perform¬ ance on the forward line and proved herself as one of the most dependable players on the team. These five seniors proudly left the team with the knowledge that they had accomplished the high¬ est goal—the undefeated championship season. Cross Country ’66 Highlighted by a 30-27 vic¬ tory over Durfee High of Fall Riv¬ er, the 1966 cross-country squad, directed by Coach Richard Bernardo, had a rather unimpressive slate rec¬ ord-wise but wer e excellent team¬ wise in gaining a great deal of the ingredient needed most by an ath¬ lete—experience. A bright future is seen because the team was comprised entirely of underclassmen. With these veter¬ ans” returning in the coming sea¬ sons, Somerset High can be assured of a place of prominence in the league.
