But, like this stream, we will journey on unceasingly through the river of life. Our journey will always be forward; our steps cannot be retraced. But we will leave Somerset High, our sheltering cove for six years, secure in the knowledge that we have been prepared to meet the demands of life and ready to make the most of opportunities which will fall in our paths. ā I We, the Class of 1964, are proud to dedicate the twenty- seventh edition of our yearbook to you, Mr. Simpson, in deep appreciation of your many years of devotion to the students of Somerset High School. As a teacher you have broadened our knowledge of mathe¬ matics, physics, and biology. As track and football coach, you have fostered among us a spirit of sportsmanship in addition to leading our teams to victory. We wish to thank you for your sincere devotion to us in the past and wish you success and happiness in the future. to Simpson Athletics Seniors Activities Administration-Saculty b Mr. Kilgrew Superintendent 8 Mr. Kaylor Principal 9 Mr. Morris Miss Mason Vice Principals Mr. ' Daley faculty MR. WROBLESKI 21 j ON THE DEATH OF A PRESIDENT By Harvey Alden Jn Memonam Were I to shed but one tear, And you shed but one, too, We shall have given our testament To what this man could do. And were this pool, river or lake To flow deep through this earth. Perhaps the thoughts, to which he held, Could be given their re-birth. Then the ocean, like a tidal wave. Could wash Manās tainted roots, Rinse clear his tarnished silver, Shine his dirty boots. It is time for us to think again, Of history long since passed Are we to waste our heritage, To let this shot go past? If each of us were to meditate On all our fellow Man, To refuse to waste away each day, To do all that we can. Then he, our President, Could rest from whence he came, Knowing that the fatal bullet Had not been suffered in vain. $okn Titzgerald Kennedy President of the United States 1960-1963 Poem by English teacher, MR. Translated, it means Seize the Opportunity.ā This is the key to success. Throughout our four short years at Somerset we have been seizing the opportunityā to increase our knowledge and wisdom and to do our best to succeed in everything we have attempted, from making the Honor Roll to winning the Thanksgiving Day game. But, the message of this motto does not end with our final days in high school. Its wisdom should remain throughout our lives to guide us in all our undertakings. Our freshman year was a difficult but challenging one. The transition from junior high to high school required a new maturity and responsibility. For our leaders we chose Alan Hadad, president; Patricia Perry, vice-president; Sherry Goff, secretary; and Antone DeMello, treasurer. Our football team, under the direction of Head Coach Sherm Kinney, strove for perfection, as did the basketball team which qualified for the Eastern Mass¬ achusetts Tech Tournament. The girlsā softball team won the Bristol County Champion¬ ship. Guiding us in our sophomore year were Alan Hadad, president; Patricia Perry, vice- president; Eleanor Semenec, secretary; and Marilyn Lavoie, girl councillor; Thomas Davenport, treasurer; and John Fortuna, boy councillor. Directed by Head Coach Paul Bogan, our football team, while suffering defeat, was not lacking in its perseverance and determination to win. The basketball, track, and baseball teams experienced very successful seasons. The climax to weeks of diligent practice came ' to the girl athletes when the field hockey team won the championship and the basketball team tied with New Bedford High for first place. Our junior year was an eventfhl one; we received our Balfour rings and started History thinking seriously about a college education. Leaders of the class were James Goodwin, president; Sharon Santos, vice-president; Marilyn Lavoie, secretary; Alan Hadad, treas¬ urer; Richard Smith, boy councillor; and Karen Flener, girl councillor. Alan Hadad was the recipient of the Harvard Book Award. Jane Thibault, Robert Gardella, and Rich¬ ard Chung were chosen to represent Somerset at Girlsā State and Boysā State. Hawaiian Alohaāā was selected as the theme of the prom, the co-chairmen of which were Nancy Mullen and Diana Wisniewski. Miss Nowacki and Mr. White, junior class advisors, guided us in our preparations for the gala affair. Our Blue Raiders, with James Sullivan as Head Coach, seized the opportunity for victory and defeated Case in a crushing 24-7 win on Thanksgiving Day. Once again, the girlsā field hockey team won the Bristol County Championship and the basketball team tied with New Bedford High. By far the most exciting, challenging, and difficult year of all was our senior year. To lead us we elected James Goodwin, president; Sharon Santos, vice-president; Thomas Davenport, treasurer; Marilyn Lavoie, girl councillor; Karen Flener, secretary; and Rus¬ sell Paul, boy councillor. The football team did very well, as did all other girlsā and boysā athletic teams. The most important events included the exchanging of class pictures, the headaches and joys of college applications and acceptances, and the eager anticipation of our prom, banquet, and finallyāgraduation. Recalling the days spent at Somerset High, we realize that we owe a great deal to our school and its teachers who have done so much to guide us along the path of success. We realize that we have an obligation to pay back this debt by seizing every opportunity that arises to better ourselves, our community, and our country. Itās worth all that trouble after all! I, Nancy Rapoza, leave Miss Corcoran a new box of salt for the benefit of Juniors who like to eat apples with salt. I, Suzanne Trudeau, leave the rex-o-graph ma¬ chine and marking pencil as an F.T.A. Student Teacher to any Junior girl whose goal is teach¬ ing. I, Susan Oliveria, leave all my worries about selling pins and bracelets to anyone in the Junior . class who will take them. I, Jeannine Lincourt, leave the bandages from my fingers to next yearās basketball player. We, Carolyn Hill and Florence Roderiques, leave our notes behind for anyone who wants to read them. I, Jane Thibault, leave all of my six rabbit cages to next yearās bio-crazy senior. We, Carol Sonion and Diana Wisniewski leave our broken lab equipment to Mr. Petrillo. I, George Brough, leave MacBethā to whoever wants the poor guy. I, Sharon Dacey, leave my new white uniform to next yearās head cheerleader and wish her as much fun and excitement as Iāve had. Right, Ellie? I, Myles Gatterman, leave my ludicrous laugh hoping that it will echo throughout the class¬ rooms of Somerset High for many years to come and leave a small portion of the joy I have ex¬ perienced to my underclassmen. I, Barbara Hoffman, am leaving Mr. James Sulli¬ van to any student who needs friendship or guidance. I, William Clifton, will leave if the teachers will let me. I, Donna Vickrey, donāt leave anything because Iām taking it all with me. I, Ellie Semenec, leave my white cheering uniform to the lucky Junior girl who will be head cheer¬ leader next year. I, Andy Gateriewictz, leave by popular demand. I, Eugene Lavoie, leave my Trig Book for any future Senior who can figure it out. I, Michael Nogueira, leave my brain to Mr. Leary to do with as he sees fit! We, Donna Robinson and Gloria Violette, gladly leave the attendance of the Mixed Chorus and Girlsā Glee to the future vice-president. I, Ronald Goldsmith, leave Mr. Beals frustrated. I, Ronald Ledoux, leave Mr. Smietana slightly shaken. We, Paul Johnston and Roger Hentershee, are just going to leave as we have many times before. We, Madeleine and Marilyn Lavoie, leave the confusion over our names. We, Gerry, Omer, and Kaiser, Tri-Captains of the football team, leave respect and admiration to Mr. Sullivan, our Coach. I, Diane Chagnon, bequeath my locker to any¬ one who can open it without hitting the hot radiator. I, Andrew Forbes, leave Miss Sullivan one new, unused French book. I, Donna Michael, leave the 1963 file cabinet in the Music Room to next yearās librarian if he can figure it out. I, Richard Chung, leave to my fortunate under¬ classmen my footsteps so that they will know where not to step. I, Judy McNamara, leave my mother and brother. We, Betsy, Donna, Mad, Mai, Nancy, and Pat, leave our apple cider on Mr. Simpsonās table cloth. I, Robert Cichon, regretfully leave room 202 after two happy years. I, Barry McGee . . . Whoās leaving???!! We, the Senior Class of 1964, leave to the faculty of Somerset High School our respect and ap¬ preciation and to next yearās seniors, the many pleasures and worries which accompany the sen¬ ior year. After winning their last five games and compiling an over-all record of seven wins and two losses, Coach Jim Sullivanās Blue Raiders clinched a piece of the crown of the well-balanced Tri- County League. They finished in a four way tie for first place with Wareham, Falmouth, and Case. This marked a great comeback for this Somerset team which had been just about counted out of the race with a record of two wins and two losses for the first four games. A great deal of the credit, of course, goes to the coach and his staff for the fine job they did. But the efforts of the players them¬ selves can hardly be overlooked. They were led by Tri-Captains Dick Shahdan, Gerry Nordeste, and Omer Rousseau; also, Bob Gardella and John Ganem, all of whom we re All-Tri-County League selections. Other outstanding performers were Bruce Cranshaw, Jim Neher, Ward Barlow, Dennis King, and Dave Johnson. The remaining senior members of the 1963 football squad were: Barry McGee, Gene Lavoie, Charlie Karpowich, John Fortuna, Jim Heron, Dick Menker, Ron Goldsmith, Dick Tolin, Paul Daghir, Ron Reiser, Dave Kielty, Howie Silvia, and Rick Sisson. Some under¬ classmen who showed great desire and spirit were Joe Silva, Dave Smith, Lionel Rousseau, and Tom Paine. I I 108 āZurkey Day Kivalry ā Last minute instructions. Ready for action! Each class strives to make its decorations and its skit the most imaginative and interesting. This rally arouses much stu¬ dent interest in the Thanksgiving Day game with Case, our strong rivals. To the dismay of the seniors, the sophomores were the proud winners this year. But, all classes did a splendid job on their particular skit, and the judges honestly announced that the best all around performance was given by the sopho¬ mores. Heap Little Big Chiefā ! Blue Raiders had another successful season in ā63-ā64. Led by their co-captains Jim Goodwin, Andy Gateriewictz, and Jerry Nordeste, and spurred by coach Tom Burns, the squad compiled a good record and winning percentage. The burden of leading the team in playing good basketball and in winning was placed on the following senior members of the squad: Bill Bogle, Bruce Cranshaw, Tom Daven¬ port, Tony De Mello, Jim Dorsey, Dick Ferris, Andy Gateriewictz, Jim Goodwin, and Jerry Nordeste. I COACH BURNS 116 i i Baseball After a second place finish on the eight team Narry League last year, Coach Jim Sullivanās Blue Raiders may prove to be the best baseball squad ever to come from Somerset High. The team features depth, power, and the desire needed to be champions. Most of the players have two or more years of varsity experience and a l arge nucleus of seniors heads the group. The squad is led by five All Narry performers. Pitcher Jim Goodwin, who tossed two no-hittersā last year, will be the mainstay of the mound staff. Outfielder and league leading hitter Barry McGee and catcher Bruce Cran- shaw will give a great deal of hitting power to the club. Andy Gateriewictz and Gene Lavoie, standouts in the airtight infield, also greatly brighten the picture. The remaining senior members of the team are: catcher Charlie Karpowich; pitchers, Tony De Mello and Ward Barlow; infielders, Dick Ferris and Bill Simons; and outfielders, Johnny Fortuna, Gerry Nordeste, Tony Henriques and Jim Neher. Win or lose, this yearās Blue Raiders possess good sports¬ manship and a spirit of fair play and will make their school proud of them. Bottom Row: W. Simons, B. Cranshaw, A. Gateriewictz, J.
