CLASS ADVISOR Miss Mason 45 When the classical civilizations of Athens and Rome flourished, their educational systems turned out young people as fine as any in history. I Those systems were an excellent combination of moral and esthetic training, both physically and mentally. Though exact goals for education were argued, all agreed in attaching the highest importance to education. Somerset, though not comparable to ancient Athens and Rome in worldly historical significance and achievement, continually strives for the same goals and sends forth year after year students who have attained high intellectual, physical, and social achievements. In our freshman year leadership was provided by James Sisson, President; Janice Cain, Vice-President; Mary Rego, Secretary; and William Aguiar, Treasurer. In football, Somerset took the Tri-County championship. The baseball team was first in the Narry League, as was the track team, while Somerset enjoyed a very successful basketball season. As sophomores we were led by George Antone, President; Janice Cain, Vice-President; Susan Zacamy, Secretary; John Faria, Treasurer; James Flannery, Boy Councilor; and Marie Cabral, Girl Councilor. Good seasons were realized in football and baseball, while the basketball and track teams took league championships. Our third year at Somerset was marked by a romantic “Garden of Dreams,” the Junior-Senior Prom. Also in this year George Antone, Richard Peirce, and Geraldine Fish were selected for Boys’ State and Girls’ State. Another event of importance was the receiving of class rings. The junior class officers were George Antone, President; Carol Costa. Vice-President; Marcia Lees, Secretary; Thomas Frado, Treasurer; Susan Zacamy, Girl Councilor; and Michael Silvia, Boy Councilor. The sports picture was highlighted by the baseball team’s Narry League championship, with successful track and basketball seasons. The most eventful year of all, our senior year, saw the class led by Alan Shea, President; Carol Costa, Vice-President; Mary Rego, Secretary; James Flannery, Treasurer; Janice Cain, Girl Councilor; and Thomas Frado, Boy Councilor. Winning seasons were enjoyed in all sports, including the 24-7 win over Case on Thanksgiving Day. As had been the case for the previous years, the girls’ sports teams turned in excellent championship records. Exchanging of pictures, preparations for the prom and banquet, applications for college, and graduation provided the high points of the year. Among numerous awards given seniors were the Betty Crocker award to Vivian Torres, the Jewish-American War Veterans’ Citizenship award to Richard Peirce, and finalist rating for John Faria in the National Merit Scholarship competition. These were important, rewarding years. If our modern civilization is to reach greater heights in humanitarian as well as scientific areas, it must rely a great deal on the high school years and their effects. Perhaps now we, the citizens of today, can proceed from knowledge to wisdom as a result of the excellent foundations we receive in education. Once Upon a Zime ... W. Richards M. Corey E. Buckley S. With a record of six wins, one loss, and two ties, Somerset finished in a tie for second in the Tri-County League. The big game, of course, was the Thanksgiving classic with Case, which Somerset won 24-7. The team featured a very strong defensive unit. The offense was powerful, led by a backfield composed of seniors Joe Phillips, the league’s leading scorer, Bill Oliveira, and quarterback George Antone and junior Gerry Nordeste. How¬ ever, it was the united effort of the team as a whole that made this championship quality possible for Somerset foot¬ ball once again. 76 Last-minute advice. football 62 Loosening up. Second Row: Steve Torres, Manager; Andy Gateriewictz; George Antone; Tony DeMello; Gerry Nordeste; Bob Pappas; Bruce Cranshaw. Coach Tom Burns made a successful debut at the helm of the Raiders quintet. The team finished fourth in the Narry League with a 9-7 record, a commendable record considering the team’s members were mostly underclassmen. Only two seniors, George Antone and Mai Wood, played for the Blue Raiders. George Antone, the field general and playmaker on the squad, often displayed his aggressiveness and expert ballhandling by a deadly set shot fiom the top of the key- When rebounds were needed, it was hustling Mai Wood who was usually in there scrapping for the ball to make many of those important points from offensiv c rebounds. Strongly supporting these seniors were such worthy players as Andy Gateriewictz, one of the top league scorers, and Gerry Nordeste, the rugged rebounder who constantly scored on his drives. Pivotman Jim Goodwin effectively executed deceptive fakes that enabled him to split the twines from under the backboard. Backing these boys next season will be some seasoned veterans such as Bruce Cranshaw, Tom Davenport, Tony DeMello, Bill B ogle, and Boh Pappas. 85 junior Varsity Front Row: Joe Dionne; Antone Henriques; James Malone; Dick Ferris; Paul Galvin; Mike Dacey; Rick Dallaire. Second Row: Barry Smith, Manager; Tom Dukes; Bob Douglas; Alan Hadad; Frank Mullins; Bob Brough; Lionel Rousseau; Ted Porada, Manager. MAL WOOD GEORGE ANTONE 86 Kneeling: Eugene Lavoie, William Alexander, Andy Gateriewictz, Barry McGee, Bruce Cranshaw, George Antone. Standing: Mr. James Sullivan, Charles Poole (Manager), John Fortuna, Richard Ferris, James Goodwin, Pat Hunt, Hank Seaman (Captain), Gerald Nordeste, Ward Barlow, Andrew Forbes (Manager). Maseball In his freshman year as head coach, Mr. James Sullivan steered the Blue Raiders to the Narry League Championship. The diamond men compiled a successful 13-3 record. Mr. Robert Souza, who was an outstanding second baseman for the Raiders, coached the Junior Varsity to a victorious season. This year’s squad will be a well-balanced team as a number of experienced members will return. Captain Hank Seamen heads up a talented mound corps. Hank is noted throughout the league for his burning fastball. Slick-fielding Pat Hunt can capture any ball that is hit to him at his shortstop position. Pat was among the Narry leaders in doubles during the previous campaign. In the outfield a dangerous ball hawk will be found in the person of George Antone. This player has the exceptional ability to produce the clutch hit. Hustle and desire is the trademark of Bill Alexander. Though he sees little action, Bill is the most aggressive man in the outfield when he plays. This will be the final year for these four boys, but a few skillful underclassmen will aid future Raider teams. Jim Goodwin, one of the most successful pitchers, can be depended upon to win his share of games. Boys such as Andy Gateriewictz, Bruce Cranshaw, Gerry Nordeste, Barry McGee, and Eugene Lavoie will be swinging the big bats for the Raiders. The future combination of seasoned veterans and promising rookies should bring the Raiders an impressive campaign. 89 GEORGE ANTONE HANK SEAMEN PAT HUNT BILL ALEXANDER junior Varsity 01 E rsf Row: J. Zrack Seasoned veterans provided the punch that was necessary for a victorious cam¬ paign this past season. The cindermen were under the capable leadership of Captain Jim Waring. The Blue Raiders had a number of other talented senior speedsters. Boys such as Bill Shaughnessey (220 and relay), Dick Tinsley (880 and relay), A1 Shea (440 and relay), George Santerre (100 and relay), and Keith Marsden (880) did much to make possible Somerset’s impressive record.
