It pre- out-of-town schools during add color and glamor to the NATIONAL FOREN SIC LEAGUE SPEECH The members of the Speech group and the N.F.L. did not have as busy a year as in the past but they had a fine year. Speech activities were limited because of lack of funds. The de- bate teams were composed of Jerry Kennedy, Allen Mitchell, Jim Fred Kopenhoefer, Douglas Losey, J imTom Holt, and Hugh Vaughn. The latter twodid notlose adebateall season. Opponents in debate were Harrodsburg, Madison Model, Bell Co., Middlesboro, and Benham. The debate teams won seven and lost four. Somerset was runner-up in the regional debate tournament. In other speech activities Somerset was well represented. Jerry Kennedy and Hugh Vaughn received superior ratings in Extemporaneous Speaking in the regional contest at Barbour- ville. Jim Fred Kopenhoefer received Superior in Radio Speaking and Tommy Adams rated Superior in Discussions. Jim Fred Kopenhoefer, Vicki Ritter, Allen Mitchell, and Joan Meadows rated good or excellent in poetry and dramatic reading. In the State Speech Festival, Hugh Vaughn received Superior in Extemporaneous Speaking. Jerry Kennedy and Tommy Adams were rated excellent in Discussion. Jim Fred Kopenhoeffer received an excellent rating in Radio Speaking. Some members of the Speech group attended N .F . L. Student Congresses at Winchester, Georgetown, and Frankfort. Somerset also had a dele- gation at the Model United Nations held on the Campus of Transylvania University at Lexington. His experience is of great value to the group. On February 13 the club actually operated the local station from 5:00 a.m. till 11:00 p.m. This was the climax of the year's program, Each Saturday Johnny Fitzwater, club president, and John Denton act as masters of ceremonies at W S F C during Teen Time Hour. This left a big hole in the Jumper line. In the first game ofthe season, Boone County nosed out the Jumpers by 13-12. Gene Tassie and Ed McKenney scored for Somerset. The Jumpers Won the second game by defeating highly-ranked Middlesboro by 7-6. Jim Ed Daulton carried the ball across and McKenney booted the deciding extra point. Daulton, Cook ,and Cunningham scored as Somerset knocked off Knox Central 20-7. The next Jumper victim was the Tompkinsville team, which fell by 38-12. Ed McKenney paced the wayg Tas- sie, Daulton also scored, as did Coffey. The next game was a disastrous thriller 7-7 but 1ost the second leading scorer and ground gainer when Jim Ed Daulton suffered a broken leg in the second play of the game. Next the Corbin Redhounds, led by Calvin Bird, flew all over Somerset, 39-0. Somerset tripped Hazard on Tommy Adams's 10-yard sweep. The Jumpers felt defeat for the last time when they lost to Henry Clay by 7-6. Tassie scored- Fern Creek fell before the quarterbacking of Tweedy, the running of Grissom, Cunning- ham, and Tassie were deciding factors. Tassie and Cunningham racked up the points. K. M. I. was trimmed 7-0 on a one-yard sneak by Ed McKenny. Adams and Tassie were outstanding. In the Lake Cumberland Bowl game Somerset reached their peak. Once again Tassie's running and Tweedy's passing were important factors in the jumpers victory. Tassie, who scored three touchdowns, was named most valuable player. FOOTBALL LETTERMEN FOOTBALL LETTERMEN FOOTBALL LETTERMEN CAPTAIN TOM ADAMS-Big and rough senior end, outstanding on defense. Good leader. Honorable Mention All-State. CO-CAPTAIN ALLEN MITCHELL-Small, but rough and very aggressive. Always in there fighting. Very good blocker and tackler. GENE TASSIE-Leading ground gainer, second high scorer with 42 points. Voted Most Valuable Player in Lake Cumberland Bowl game. All-State Honorable Mention. DAVID HAM-Big, aggressive, and rough. Good on defense. Honorable Mention All-State. GERALD MONDS-Best offensive lineman, opened wide holes on right side for ball car- rier to travel through. JIM ED DAULTON-One of the best Jumper fullback prospects in years. Second leading ground gainer. Unfortunately received an injury early in the season which prevented his playing. Lots of steam and the will to play. SAM TWEEDY-Swift and shifty quarterback. Good play caller, able to adjust to the sit- uation. Leading passer. GENE PRATHER-Leading pass-receiver. Also outstanding on defense. Valuable as a player who rushed the opponent's passers. LOWELL BURTON--Small, hard-charging lineman with brutal force behind his charge. Fast and aggressive. HAROLD CUNNINGHAM-Big, 190-pound halfback, hard to bring down when he was started. Good tackler and defensive halfback. JERRY KENNEDY-Senior. Sure handed center who was very valuable at centering ball. back on punts and extra points. ED COOK-Senior. Hard-running back with exceptional speed. Fine as a defensive half- back. TERRY LOVELESS-Senior. Exceptionally good blocker and tackler. Rusket always provided the wit for the team. DANNY JASPER-Senior. Fullback who was very effective at backing up the line. KELLY GRISSOM-Senior halfback. Shifty and a good broken-field runner. DAVID GRAYBEAL-Junior. Captain-elect. Good aggressive player and a bone-crushing tackler. ED MCKENNEY-Junior. Co-captain-elect. Quarterback. Good all around player, fast and shifty. The season's high scorer with 47 points. JOE RUDD-Junior fullback. Hard runner and good defensive back. RICHARD CORRELL-Junior guard. Exceptionally good on defense. Shows much prom- ise for next season. LARRY DICK-Junior halfback. Good defensive back. Good on punt returns. GENE BRANSCUM -Junior guard. Hard tackler. Splendid defensive man. BOB WADDLE-Freshman center. Good line-backer. Plenty of promise. COACHES--William M. Clark, and James Williams. BASKETBALL LETTERMEN CO-CAPTAIN JERRY BENNETT - Senior forward. The Jumpers' leading scorer. A left-handed player who was good on defense and a good rebounder. CO-CAPTAIN TOMMY ADAMS- Senior center. A consistent rebounder who was very effective on tip-ins. Led team in field goal accuracy. EDDIE NEWTON - Senior guard. A very fast, hard-working ball player. Good jump shot artist. HAROLD CUNNINGHAM - Senior guard, the playmaker. Outstanding ball handler. Excellent passer and dribbler. ED NEWELL-Junior forward. All District team. Second leading scorer. Scored 32 points against Monticello. ED COOK - Senior guard Good two-hand set shot. Very good defensively. BYRON YOUNG-Senior guard. A good jump shot. Very accurate shot and a smart player. WILLIAM COFFEY-Junior forward. Outstanding rebounder. Good one- hand push shot. Left-handed player. LARRY DICK - Junior guard. Good playmaker and smart passer. BILL MAUNEY - Sophomore forward. BASEBALL The Jumper baseball squad had a rough season in 1957 and wound up the season with a 2-8 record. They were runner-up in the District Tournament. This was the first year in Somerset baseball history that they had lost the tourney. Pitcher Harold Cunningham, Byron Young, Gene Tassie, William Coffey, and Ed Mc- Kenney worked hard all year. Jim Tom Holt, Ed Cooke, Gary Mitchell, Allen Mitchell, Richard Allen, Tommy Adams, David Hamm, Gene Prather, Johnny Fitzwater, Wilson Sears, David Bodie, Jimmy Tram- mell, Frank Snapp, Ronnie Baker, and Bill Cain, led the Somerset team through out the year. U x A 9,3 i 1 . ,W RN X, A I 4 SOMERSET VOCATIONAL SCHOOL The Somerset Area Vocational School originally started in 1940, as the Vocational Department of Somerset High School. There have been fif- teen years of successful and rapid growth, much to the benefit of both adults and high school students. In 1941 the Somerset Vocational School was started with Mr. Howard Huff as coordinator. He continued in this capacity until March 1948 when he was succeeded by Mr. L. C. McDowell, who served in this position until 1955 and was then succeeded by Mr. H.D. Noe. Mr. Huff was originally the instructor of the print shop at the Somerset Vocational School. During the critical World War II period the Somerset School became a training center for defense work. At present it offers courses in Printing, Auto Mechanics, Machine Shop, Woodworking, Radio, and Electricity. The faculty is made up of: Mr. Edward Ping, Printing Instructorg Mr. Ray Foster, Auto Mechanics, Mr. Virgil Grayson. Machine Shop: Mr. Charles Pritchett, Woodworkg Mr. Charles Robinette, Electricity and Radio. Mr. Clyde Denton, Related Subjects for Printing Trades, and Mr. Johri Sackett, Instructor of Related Subjects. The floor space totals 9,274 sq. feet, with equipment valued at S1 13,825, The adults who have taken training at this school have been very successful in getting jobs upon completion of their courses. A high percent- age of the graduates are either working in the trades for which they trained or in allied trades. In addition to the Industrial Education courses offered at Somerset, a prcgram of Distributive Education was added to the school curriculum in July of 1948. Mr. John Maguire is the Teacher Coordinator in Distributive Education. Mr. Walter G. Lehmann is Teacher Coordinator in Trade and Industrial Education. Boys, who are not enrolled in school or who have graduated from high school and are twenty years .of age or less, may enroll for a trade training.
