We look back on our years spent as stu- dents of Somerset High, and realities be- come memories. Our senior year was inaugurated with a most successful football season. We fin- ished the season with a 9-l record, the best ever produced on the gridiron of S.J.H.S. Our Senior Class Play, The Curious Sav- age, lingers as a highlight of the past. We are proud of the record established by our all-time magazine sales. We remember our winning basketball, wrestling, and track teams. The hours devoted to these and other school activities have brought to us the feeling of satisfaction in a iob well done. We shall always remember the dances given for us by the Sophomore and Junior classes, as well as our Class Day pro- gram With the coming ofthe second semester, came cur final memcries of S.J.H.S. Name cizrds and announcements were ordered, and measurements fcr caps and gowns were taken. As Baccalaureate and Com- mencement drew nearer, we realized that the four years spent within the walls of S.J.H.S. had been the happiest years cf our lives. Baccalaureate was a most beautiful and unforgettable experience. As we icined our voices together ot Commence- ment for the last time in singing the Alma Mater, we were overwhelmed with a feel- ina cf respect and love for Somerset Joint High School. This year the Student Council progressed a step further in its development by having a Senior High Council including grades TO, il, and T2 and a Junior High Council including grades 8 and 9, both being presided over by the same president. The councils were very busy and had many important activities. Two of these were helping to collect money for the bene- fit of an electric scoreboard for the football field and distributing the new, revised S handbook. Striving to achieve higher scholarship and better school citizenship among our stu- dent body is the National Honor Society. This organization, sponsored by Miss Bessie Long, is a society for juniors and seniors who are outstanding in scholarship, leader- ship, character, and service. Only students in the upper third of their class are eligible. These are then voted upon by the faculty. Five per cent of the class may be installed during the iunior year and an additional ten per cent during the senior year. Each year the society employs much time and et- fort in painting the front windows of the school at Christmas time, plus enioying many other activities. Our vccal music program is open to all who show interest and are willing to strive to better the chorus. The center of this pro- gram is the mixed chorus, consisting of 225 members. The students are recognized for their enthusiasm by being chosen to go to district chorus, or to belong to one of the special choruses, and the results of practice are certainly praiseworthy. Mr. Holsinger has contributed greatly to the general singing interest by presenting a Christmas cantata and several musical pro- grams. The students in the special Christmas cantata chorus showed continued interest by attending practice at 8:00 each morning. The entire cantata was rehearsed out of school time. On Monday mcrnings before school the boys chorus was always on hand to con- tribute tothe music they enjoyed. Through these groups S.J.H.S. has de- veloped a love for music. The team was well-balanced with not an outstanding player, but with the desire and determination of cham- pions. Under the capable leadership of Co-Captains Robert Stoy and Arthur Koeppe, they gave the Somerset fans something to be proud of. Adams Twp. was the first victory for Somerset. lt was a hard and well-played game, ending Somerset 21 - Adams 6. Bedford proved to be a thriller. The 6-O victory cost Somerset the services of ace passer and quarter- back Stoy for four games. However, his duties fell into the capable hands of Lee Pfrogner. Berlin fell 34-O on a rain-drenched field at Berlin. Meyersdale proved to be our fourth victim, 27-O. Richland Twp. fell before the Eagles' onslaught 27-7. Richland scored quickly, but the Somerset line and hard driving backs made vic- tory possible in a continual downpour of rain.
