Coulx .Spomor Nllss DRLNIX1 leflect mature ldeas As we the class of 1948, turn the page to 1 new chapter of our llves, We look fondly back upon four vears of joy sorrow, tireless effort, and accomplishment These memor able years mll be a reflectlon upon our fu ture happiness and success When we entered the portals of Somerset Hlgh School as greenles we were shy awkvsard, cautlous and unaware of what lay before us Our mterest was aroused by the Freshman Halloween party an event vxhlch united us as a COOPCFHIIVC body As vse passed through one phase of our lngh school career, we began to realwe our responslbllltxes and to fulfill them wrth en thuslasm We proved our capablllty and lFlgCI1LllIX by stagmg a colorful Soph Senior Dance whlch created a Chinese atmosphere lhe beginning of a new school term shovsed promise of outstandlng achieve ments and eventfulhappenmgs Although we put forth noteworthy effort ln our studles tnergetlc members of our class held promln tnt posltrons 1n the field of sports and muslc fhose not partlclpatxng watched thelr fellow classmates progress with en thuslasm and concern At mld semester, credxts were anxiously counted, for the much zntlclpatcd moment had come the order mg of class rmgs When our rmgs arrlved II1 May, we were fervently vsorkmg on 1 new project, which requlred much debatmg and a SHCFIHCC of tlme and effort Many of the hlgh school puplls remember pleasant hours spent danclng to a rhythmic orchestra ln a settlng of the old South Our unlor Prom m honor of the senlors, was appropriately named f'Southern Cotxlllon lr-lint .irtisr l-N1lll.Il'i I--fruit l 4-all fiivwrs And now, begins the last year of our role as students-a year which commenced with a feeling of authority and superiority, but which ended a little sadly, a little hurriedly. Under the leadership of our four-year presi- dent, Richard Ling, we strived to make this an unforgettable term. VVhen senior pic- tures were taken in the fall, we anxiously awaited their arrival: and, as always, when we received them, we expressed our dissatis- faction aloud-but We were really pleased. Our presentation of a comedy, Spring Fever, left the audience nursing aching sides. Spurred on by complimentary re- marks about our production we staged an original senior assembly program, which enacted each month of the year. The two dances given in our honor in the spring were greatly appreciated by us. All year we had good times, but then we came to the grave part of our school life. ln a month, which seemed to disappear too soon, we practiced for the momentous occasion-f graduation. And now, as we prepare to tal-Le our rightful place as citizens of the world, we wish to express our gratitude to everyone who has aided us in :acquiring some degree of intelligence, trust-worthyness, and respon- sibility. No matter where our diderent oc- cupations take us, we shall never forget the years we spent in the halls of S.ll.S. When they advanced to the role of ufreshiesf, they heartily enjoyed the cus- tomary Freshman Hallowelen Party under the leadership of their president, Sally Hoff- man who was aided by Nliss Long and Mr. Dietz. Schrock, in a hig way, hoth on the gridiron and on the basketball court. ln order to help defray their dance expenses, they sold refreshments at games. The Serenade in Blue, their very noteworthy Soph-Senior Hop, was quite in harmony with the nearing Christmas Season and was impressively decorated with ever- greens and hlue lights. Near the end of the year they participated in the operetta, The Gondoliersf' Several Sophomores had major parts and many served as supporting char- acters and chorus memhers. As juniors they have set a fast pace with Don Roshaugh as their leader. 'lihey have gained high recognition in sports, had two menihers in the 1947 All Star game, and added another memher of their class to the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. The position of piano accompanist is held by one of their number and many hold positions in the hand and orchestra. The climax of their .lunior year came with the Prom. With careful planning and extensive work they honored the seniors with this gay and highly successful dance. XVith glory and fun in their past, they are looking ahead to a hright future next year, with sports thrills, dances in their honor, and their long awaited graduation. S 0 P H O M 0 R E S reflect studied poise The doors were opened and in they dash- ed with all the vim and zest of let me at 'emu Freshmen. The halls rang and the walls shook with their vibrant youth, while the upperclassmen only smiled and nodded their heads with the understanding of true veterans. Ar last the crucial moment ar- rived. The higgest task they encountered was the annual Sophomore-Senior Dance preparation. Huddles were made and ideas were horn amid the elamor of delight and scorn. Finally, the traditional hair-pulling, hrihing, bloekatles for support, etc. were all thrust aside and out popped the theme for their very first dance creation' -The llearts llop. lt was a gala affairkdressed in the very hest hearts the Sophs could find. Fun, enchantment, and dreamstuff all rolled into one perfect package, and tied with the mel- low strains of a smooth orchestra, this hop will long he rememhered hy all who attend- ed it. Never could we he without these nifty Sophs. ln the game, on the hench, or keeping the hleaehers warm, their unending energy :mtl enthusiasm are positively certain to sustain that good old S.Il.S. spirit. EIGHTH GRADE reflect enthusiastic cooperation Since these young students have spent only one year as yet at Somerset High they don't have much of a past behind them. However, it is a good one. 'lihey were led by four young, able, and promising fellow-class members with Mrs. Cindric as class counselor. Some of these youngsters presented an entertaining assembly program which brought out the talent of the class. They have a promising future at Somerset High with 98 class members at present. Of course they were a little nervous for a couple weeks. Some said, I was awfully scared the teachers would be too toughf, Others said, I about fell through the floor when l saw how big the building was and how many rooms I had to find. These boys and girls are the tonic which keeps us from growing stale. Fur- thermore, we can't get too serious with their pep and cheer around. Yet they know how to study, for we find many of them on the honor roll. They promise to make a real basket- ball and football team in a few years and are always the life of the cheering section at games. Another fast and furious meet- ing of Somerset High School's governing body, the Student Council is under way. For the First time this year, the entire school voted in the election of the Senior President, Rose Furman, who proved their choice a wise one, by displaying real leadership along with original ideas and hgo-get-lem attitude. 'lihe Council then elected a Vice President, Vllilliam Guss, a Secretary, -losephine Rascona, and a llireasurer, .loyce Cassler. STUDENT COUNCIL our 'own lawmakers Due to the efforts of our Council, the sehool was treated to several julie box jumps and a Football Dance, sponsoring the District Cheerleading Contest. They produce annually the valuable S book which serves as a guide to new students. Council members handle ticket sales for football and basketball games and the President is in charge of the opening ritual in assembly. THE 1948 EAGLET The F.F.:X. Chapter of Somerset High has been quite active the past year un- der the direction of Mr. Kinny. During September new members were admitted as 'lGreen Hands, and other members were advanced to Future Farmers. ln November the entire chapter jour- neyed to Pittsburgh to see the Pittsburgh Livestock Show, representing F.F.t-X. and 4-H boys from all over the tri-state area. YVhile in Pittsburgh, the boys had a chance to see the meat packing industry in full swing at the Armour Plant. Dur- ing the week of january 12. some of the boys visited the Pennsylvania Farm Show where they saw mammoth displays of livestock and farm machinery exhibited. YVhile in Harrisburg the boys saw the State Capitol buildings. THE 1948 EAGLET Cut the board ull right here. What happened up there? Group projects were carried on by the boys at the school farm and on their own farms. The raising of livestock, beets, and corn were some of the main projects carried out during the year. The money made from these projects was turned over to the chapter treasury Where the boys may borrow money to start new projects. In the Ag shop the boys have made many items which will be useful to them on their farms. The Father and Son Banquet, held in March, was one of the highlights of the year. The F.F.A. is an organization in which the boys learn many useful things in their field while having a great deal of fun. When the Weather is suitable, Held trips are made so the members may have an opportunity to become familiar with the local plant and animal life. They also build bird houses and feeding stations which are erected in the vicinity of the school, and careful observations reveal to them the value and habits of our feathered friends. RIFLE CLUB This club has great distinction in our high school for it has gained National recognition. In -the N. R. A., Somer- set I-Iigh School gained 18th. place throughout the entire U. S. This club has several matches a year with other competitive groups such as National Rifle Association Postal Matches, and the Military Rifle Group. The purpose of the group, instructed by Mr. Lauer, is to teach young men the art of handling a gun safely. The enrollment of this Club at present is 26. STUDENT PATROL I-Iold the kids! is a familiar cry around the school. Ir signifies the boys of the Student Patrol are on the job. This organization is very important to the safety of the students of Somerset Hi. The boys have the important task of seeing that the students are shown safely across the streets and of handling the crowds and parking cars at foot- ball games. The boys are treated to a three day trip to YVashington, D. It put in its colorful appearance at all the football games with the exception of the Allegheny game. Military bearing and precision were in- stilled into the members until it became a part of them. Included in the band were nineteen seniors, many of whom held prominent positions. ln the spring mirrors our pride in S.H S the band, making the switch from march- ing to concert music, held a concert which was very favorably received. After many, many years of hard work the band was finally rewarded with new uni- forms. During the past year, chiefly through the unstinting efforts of Mr. Singer, and the cooperation of all its members, our band greatly improved, and will undoubt- edly do still more if Mr. Singer remains at the helm. After sharpening their pencils and thoughtfully scratching their heads, the members of the Literary Staff described each Senior in catchy phrases. Next came the faculty and club write-ups and more difliculties. Later features and lead- lines were incorporated. Wvith Mrs. Cin- dric's aid the work was Hnally Hnished. The huge Senior magazine subscrip- tion campaign was a great success, largely due to the expert management of the business staff. Selling advertisements to print in the yearbook took time and work. but Miss lVlcCance willingly came to the rcscue many times. A member of this staff visited each room, took the orders and collected the money for the book. During this time the art staff was not idle. Against Bedford in the first game, which ended 12-12, Dave Ash had two long touchdown runs called back. Alle- gany was our next foe. This game ended 7-0 in Somerset's favor. On that night the orange-and-black-clad warriors tllfll- ed back two Allegany drives within the one yard line. Again Ash had a touch- down called back. The team moved on to Huntingdon, minus the injured Lapina, but still confident of their prowess. De- spite a gallant Hght, Huntingdon won that game 13-O. Shade Twp. came next. SCOI'1I1g on a long pass in the final quarter BALL they held us to an 18-18 deadlock. High- light of the game was a 92 yard touch- down run by Neil Ankney. Here too, Dave had two touchdowns called back. We traveled to Scottdale sure that we were due to win, but our opponent's passes were too much. The score was 19-7 in Scottdalels favor. Along came Boswell to whom we blew a 13-6 half- time lead, to lose out 19-13. 1n a rough contest in which four boys were thrown out for lighting, Westmont soundly trounced us 39-6. Long runs, mostly by Westmont, featured the game. Ash was injured on the first play of the game. The next week we faced the undefeated and untied Indiana eleven to go down lighting to the tune of 33-6. Coming home battered and defeated, we looked forward to our set-to against an opponent in our own class, but Conemaugh Twp. also dashed our hopes to the ground by a score of 6-0. During the course of the season, Carl Schrock became well known as a pass receiver. Doc Shaffer, too, began to haul them down towards the close of the year. Lapina fwhen not hampered by in- juriesj and Burdeau were stonewalls on defense. Don Albright's kicking got us out of trouble time after time. Ash gave the crowd thrills with his long runs. Ros- baugh was doing well until he was in- jured in the Scottdale game and was out for the season. On only a few of the games did the opposition have an easy time of it. 'lihe SCZ1SOIliS record stands at 13 won and S lost. An example of their lighting spirit was shown in the two Bedford games. In the first game our boys lost by a decisive score down at Bedford. VVhen the Bedford boys came up here, our boys tore into them with a tiger's ferocity to win by a large score. :Xl- though Vllestmont copped two wins over the J.V's, hoth were hard fought, closely contested games that were not de- cided until the final few seconds.
