A nation is made up of individuals, If the individual is corrupt, the nation becomes weakened. You, the graduating class of 1966, are few in number, yet your influence for good or bad extends further than you think. Make up your mind that no one will ever be able to point the finger of scorn or accusation at you, that you will be such a person as your parents, school, town, and eventually, your children will be proud to know. i Our scientists today are doing things that only a few years ago we would have con1- T sidered possible only in science fiction. They are on the verge of creating living , organisms, and in only a very few years, they expect to land a man on the moon. Just recently they have found means of changing the genes that determine heredity so that tomori-0w's generations will be more intelligent than today's, They will 1 also be able to increase the ability to remember facts. This is good because man's T knowledge is expanding at an astounding rate, and future generations will need more intellectual capability to learn and understand. It is probable that in the near future the professional man will need to return to the campus periodically to update his H knowledge, But let us not, in the scramble for knowledge, for scientific advancement, for ma- terial wealth, forget moral values. Our country was founded principally because of the desire for religious freedom, We must, parents and teachers and ministers, make sure that our future generations do not forget their heritage, and that a coun- try founded under God does not become Godless. 3 Mrs. Laura Meader Mrs' Queenie W1-,ipp1e Primary gl 1Sf Grades 2, 3, ar 4 Mrs. Amy Robinson Mrs. Laura McCo11or Grades 5 8z 6 Grades 7 Sr 8 Mrs. Mary Hall Mrs. Marilyn Rogers Mr. Loen Burbank Remedial Teacher Compensatory Teacher Band Kr Chorus I ' ,J . .. eh. .T ....L 9-flu -- -vP:'F-3+-45-'4 -'-3 Mrs. Madeline French Colby College, B.A., Columbia U. The scene opened in a reception room of the House of Health Whinnie More had come to the House for a rest with Sylvester Smith, Although he didn't get his rest, he did keep his secret, His company was sponsoring a contest, and whoever could answer the question would win S10,000. Since Whinnie was the only one who knew the answer, he had to hide out. This sudden leave from his town would give him a rest. But Millie and Katie Van Loom and Terror Tripp didn't give him much of a chance to rest. Things are going pretty good until Freckles gets into the picture. Gary Withers . Betty Heald . WHAT IT MEANS TO ME Our democracy today was derived from the hard work and sacrifice of our ancestors after they broke away from colonial rule and sought to make a more perfect un- t f the eople by the people and for the people. I believe it is ion--a governmen 0 p , , my duty as a citizen of America and a student of an American school to uphold and ' f defend democracy's strength, for our government depends upon the actions o a h citizen I ask myself What can I do for my country? First of all, I can e c . d citizen. The democratic way of life is preserved when each start by being a goo citizen is loyal to his fellow citizens, He reasons and communicates with people, d for without this our domestic, national, and world problems cannot be solve . Th 't' en res ects the rights, property, and ideas of other people, He is non- e ci iz p prejudiced and cooperative, Co-operation among people leads to a stronger de- ' ' ' ' h th h fa'th mocracy. I believe that my generation, fwhen having reached the voting agej, after being ex- sed to this study of democracy, can do much to maintain the strength of our th freedom po nation's government. We learn to use our freedom wisely. We USG G of speech, which is a guidepost to better understanding and a base for forming our opinions for our government is run mostly on public opinion. We must remember that the right to vote places a great responsibility on our hands, and we must carry out this responsibility to its best. We all have a voice in democracy , and we should speak it well! In conclusion, I would like to say that we are the democratic government, and we ' ' I din may I paraphrase the late should make it our duty to keep it strong. n en g President John F. Kennedy's words: Ask not what your dem-ocracy can do for you ask what you can do for your democracy! Glenda Foss 34 . ' z. ' , -.pgv snr: -- 'A SUCCESS Success is a very important subject. This is something that everyone desires and trys to meet. Success is very important in today's life, In order to meet with it you must work hard and realize that you must stay one step ahead of others, not be just an average person. You must find your goal and strive for it. Analyze yourself and ask what you Want in life. Be prepared to meet with hardships and acquire enough skill to over come them. Understand the meaning of your future and pick the college that fits you best, one that you will be happy at and work hard to meet with success. Don't go wholly by other people's suggestions or let them make up your mind for you. This is your future and you are the one who is to live it and enjoy it. So take some advice from other people, but think things out for yourself. Look at all the aspects to each opportunity and find out what seems to suit you best, When you have decided what you are best suited for, ask yourself if you will be happy with this kind of work and can you do it well, for other people may be planning on you for this work. So in order to meet with success and accept it, you must work hard, willingly and intelligently. Respond accordingly and with the feeling of con- fidence. Terry Cahill THE UNKNOWN APPOINTMENT Everyone has an unknown appointment with death, Just when we do not know. Our life is but a short devastating breath, And then on our endless journey we go. It's shame how some lives are wasted, For the young, miss many chances, Especially the youngg sweet life they've never tasted, Never enjoyed much of life's romances, Some spent life cheerfully singing like a lark For they think death will never come to me But now those bright spring days have suddenly turned dark, And there's no more singing in that mourning family. So prepare for your unknown date Don't say it can't happen to me lt's one of those inevitable fates, That comes to all, the burdened and the free. Linda Baiko i , ... .-.. .iw .,, .i,i. .-. LIFE IN A FOX-HOLE He was digging in for the night, wondering if maybe he was digging his own grave. This always went through his mind as he was digging out his bed for the night. Wondering if when morning came they would just throw the dirt back on top of him, or if he would climb back out again to go on killing the enemy, He never slept much, as he was cooped up in the tiny hole in the ground, He had to lsit with his back against one wall of the hole with his knees sticking up even with his eyes. He had to sleep with his helmet on and both hands on his rifle, ready to fire if the need should arrive. Besides being a very small and compact place to sleep, it was muddy in the bottom, and it got quite cold at night. As he heard the shells exploding around, he thought about all the people that they had killed that day when they attacked a small village. He thought of all the need- less deaths of the women and children who got in the line of fire, Then, all of a sudden, all of his thoughts stopped as the blackness of night around him lightened up as if daylight had come out from hiding, and there was a deafening roar as a shell landed very close to his fox-hole, The next morning the rest of the patrol got out of their fox-holes and pushed the dirt back into his hole. Then, they stuck the barrel of his rifle into the ground and placed the helmet over the stock, Later they moved out, leaving him, who would never have to worry about sleeping in a fox-hole again. Mark Rogers COLOR RHYTHM Red is the color of the autumn leaves, In piles or bundles, stacks or sheaves, Yellow is the color of a new bright sun, Which shines upon us--everyone, Blue is the color of the morning sky, Why it is so--I don't know why, Orange is the color of a. bright rainbow, Many other colors blend with it so, Green is the color of the summer grass, Sprinkled with dew, it shines like glass. Brown is the color of our Harvest Home, It fills us with gladness and bloom. White is the color of a new fallen snow, It becomes loads of fun, as we all know. Color Rhythm comes to an end, For there are other poems that I must mend. Bruce Robbins ...B . - ,..,, ...... 5..- V 1, . M..- .4..-,.+...Q.......a .-...-.-.-A-7-77 - , w 1 l A CODE OF MORALS AND ETHICS The following ideas that I am going to list are what I believe are good morals to follow. In the first place everyone needs morals or they shall be very mixed up and in much troubleg all in all, they won't be happy in the end. The best of all are the morals for man that are set down in the Bibleg the Ten Com mandments and the Golden Rule. It's terribly hard to always try to do right and love all your neighbors, but if you are at least trying, you are off to a good start. You should listen to the things that your parents, teachers, etc. try to tell you. They're usually right and they are only telling you for your own good. The least you can do is listen, If you don't believe in religion and no one has ever told you what is right and what is wrong, use common sense. Don't do to other people what you wouldn't want them to do to you. Decide what you think is right and wrong, And once you decide, don't get sidetracked. Stick to it and make something of yourself. Those are some morals and ideas I think you must follow in order to be happy fand to make those you associate with be happy.D Jo Rancourt To the Editor: The recent protest demonstrations concerning United States policy in Vietnam, and the draft, in my opinion are acts which are definitely wrong on the part of the pro- testers. I am not trying to tell people what they should or shouldn't do, but through this editorial I can express my opinion on this subject. The policy is decided upon by the government, and the government is elected by the majority of the people. Therefore, why should the people protest against the government which they elected? Even disregarding the above statement, the people should put the country, as it is, first not the country as they would like it to be. To use a well-known quotation, My country right or wrong, but my country . Brent Brown A ...--..---..- .... -,.- I . aasa alsaa AUTUM N I think Autumn's a wonderful time of year. One that no one hates or ever has to fear Like summer when people have the fear of hurrioaines, And winter, the terrible storms we have in Maine, I like the Autumn's bright and cool breeze When the leaves begin to fall from the trees, Then come the branches which are so bare, And the cold winter wind blowing everywhere. Just think how a warm autumn would seem, When people from the states come to see the scene, Just think of all the people that would come to Maine, If every year the weather was the same. The fresh, clean smell of the new pine trees Blowing all together in every wand'ring breeze, The woodsmen hauling their winter wood, Getting as much as they wish they could, Now wouldn't you want Autumn as in Maine, And to see all the visitors that come. When you look down on the ground, There you'll see leaves of green, yellow, and brown. Jean Quimby A,.,..,f ., A , Y.- ll- Y Y Y - WW ,. ,- ,Wm .. ., -, -,-.,.. .3 .,..n, ,, . , , ., ..,, ' ' '.
