GENEVA LONGFELLOW PADHAM '46 ir- f .lla Class Histor HEN WE BEGAN our Freshman year in 1954 there were eleven of us in our class. These original members included Frances Fecteau, Fred Walther, George Kiger, Arthur Mayhew, Bruce LaCasce, Wayne Buzzell, Francis Heath, Lawrence Morin, Dianne Stevens, Douglas Hayden, and Wilfred Giroux. Most of us had been together since first grade. During that first year we lost two of our classmates, Francis and Wayne, and gained a new mem- ber from Bingham, Norma Phillips. We had fun selling fudge, pop- corn and apples at recess, and were well represented in such school activities as basketball, baseball, cheering, Senior Play and Prize Speaking. We also sponsored a special Talent Show to help fatten our class fund. VV e began our Sophomore year with nine members, but lost an- other member, Lawrence, during the year. Our Sophomore year was one we had all looked forward to, the year we bought our class rings. Surprisingly enough, all members chose the same style. Again most of our members participated in the extra-curricular activities offered. The beginning of our junior year found eight of us taking an- other step toward Graduation. During this year we lost two more classmates: Norma Phillips, due to illness, and Wilfred Giroux, due to an unfortunate fire. Wilfred transferred to Skowhegan, Frances Fecteau transferred to Edgewater High, Florida in November, but returned in January to finish the year at Solon High. In our junior year we were again busy raising money for our Senior class trip. VVe sponsored The Wagon Mastersf' starring Roy Aldridge, held record hops at the Solon Fire Hall, sold fudge, and chose our Senior Play, His Name Was Aunt Nellie. On September 4, 1957 we entered our Senior year with six of us present. We presented our Senior Play, which was a big success, had our class pictures taken at Stevens Studio in Bangor, and began work on THE Drmco. Again we held dances to earn money, and to further our own plans for a class trip. Although we all will have been extremely busy in this our Sen- ior year, I am certain it will be a year which we will all remember with fondest memories. 1 '+N I V' K 1451410 my 'A P- W1 lla ill, ' 3 AD L - ,- W 9 'L' l, ,vi pill 1 DOUGLAS R. BOYS' BASKETBALL Solon's basketball team, composed mainly of unclergratluates, had only a fair season this year, winning but three games while losing eleven, and placing seventh in the league. Leland McDonough was chosen to represent Solon on the All-Star team, but refused the honor. Fred Vvalther was chosen to replace Leland. Alton Rollins won the Solon foul shooting contest by getting 39 out of 50. Ile then went to the regional competition at Colby College where hc swishecl only 22 out of 50. Solon was unsuccessful again this year in their efforts to get into the Section Four Tournament, losing to Monson .46 to 42 in the play-olfs held at Nlaclison. With all but two seniors returning next year Solon should bc a strong contender for the league championship. 20 LEAGUE GAMES Solon 40 Anson 44 Solon 43 Bingham 61 Solon 36 Monson 44 Solon 49 Jackman 54 Solon 57 Central 68 Solon 27 Harmony 44 Solon 103 Athens 35 Solon 42 Jackman 58 Solon 39 Anson 55 Solon 43 Bingham 55 Solon 70 Monson 54 Solon 51 Athens 45 Solon 58 Central 63 Solon 64 Harmony 83 722 763 Team average per game 51.57 Opponents 54.5 Airruun lVlAY1rEw .58 K ' s. f .4 , I f 1 L. 1.1 ' . . ,' lf' 1 1 fy , 1 , , . , M ' ,, 1 l ' L VN l Il' 7 ff L W , be lp iff lv V74 VQJLV L 1 1 lil J fl fr f' 1 J Kneeling: C. Although the girls weren't very successful this year they worked very hard and had a great deal of fun. The girls started out with nearly a whole new team and with the assistance of a new coach, Miss Verna Colby. Six new girls were added to the squad: Fay- lene LaCascc, Carla Rollins, Frances Morin, Carol VValther, Stella Viles, and Marialyee Tus- can. One eighth grader practiced with the squad, but she won't be eligible to play until next year. There weren't any Seniors on our squad this yearg therefore we should do better next year. Chloe Hayden was high scorer with 214 points. Ann Rogers was second with 65 points, and Faylene LaCasce followed with 62 points. Chloe Hayden, captain, was chosen to repre- sent Solon in the All-Star game held at North Anson, February 7. For some of those who will be playing bas- ketball it will serve also as valuable pre-season conditioning. Under the coaching of Mr. Civ- en the team finished second among six schools in a meet held October 18th at Bingham. In all, Solon won three out of five meets, two on their own 3.1 mile course, and one at Bingham. Lewis Cahill holds the record on the Solon course with a clocking of I4.04 minutes. Verdell LaCasce is second with 14:o4.5 minutes. The final meet was held at Bing- ham October 18th, with I-ive other schools competing over a 2M mile course. Lewis Cahill placed sec- ond and Verdell LaCasce third. Both received medals for placing among the first five. With Lewis Cahill, Verdell La- Casce, Edward Civen, Norman VVood, Larry French, and -lames VVithers all returning next year, the team and coach have high hopes for an even more successful season in 1958. LEWIS CAHILL '6 1 Baseball As the yearbook goes to press, the VVildcats are preparing for a building year in baseball. The Solon Wildcats will be minus Five of last year's starters. The main problem this year, therefore, appears to revolve around the development of a good first baseman, a strong catcher, and building depth and strength in the pitching department. All these positions are wide openi' and the scramble to H11 them this year may increase the chances for a cham- pionship team in 1959. Three of these cheerleaders, Ann Rogers, Faylene LaCasce, and Frances Mo- rin, were new this year. Veteran members on the squad were Anne Withers and Dianne Stevens, head cheerleader. Barbara Bubar, our alternate cheerleader, practiced c h e e r i n g with us and had an opportunity to cheer in the Bingham-Solon game. We had new uniforms this year. They were made of bright red rayon gabardine. The weskits were styled with two rows of gold but- tons. The skirts were lined with bright red and blue plaid. To com- plete our outfits, we wore long- sleeved white blouses and made plaid ties to match the lining of our skirts. VVe made these outfits ourselves, with the exception of the blouses, and worked very hard to have them ready for our first game on November 15th. The cheerleaders bought a stuffed toy wildcat this year as their mascot, which they took to all the games. lrlis name was Willie,'.
