M The PIONEER Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Three Solomon Juneau High School Milwaukee, Wisconsin yy, N. 'x is B i x EAA I I Qs Milf F FOREWORD Solomon Jurieau in 1953 . . . the bustle, the excitement, the turmoil. The echoing of hurried footsteps in the halls . . . a sudden call . . . the slam of a door far down the corridor. Gaity, fun, romance . . . earnest striving, and studying . . . friendly teachers. Preparing for dances, the class play, winter concert, Jamboree . . . developing leadership in classrooms, in study halls, in clubs . . . Weekend football games . . . school elections. The hours spent on that impossible math problem . . . the laughs, the heartaches. Seemingly disjointed, these are but a few of many memories of Juneau, recorded in our annual. Together they constitute a picture of the teeming life at our school home. The precious hoursadd up to our years well-spent, growing up within the sheltering Walls of Juneau. The Hnal years speed by. Suddenly you find yourself about to graduate, and you are afraid. Afraid to cross the threshold into life. And then you recall a similar fear - the fear you felt when you first came to Juneau. How absurd it seems now, The four all-too-short years at Juneau have brought fulfillment of every hope and dream. You no longer fear the challenge facing you. With footsteps ever immobilized in the halls of Juneau, you press forward to your goals, knowing We can make our lives sublime, ,f T J And, departing, leave behind us 1 I Footprints in the sand of time. 1, ' 1 - p . What finer task of love and sympathy, than to develop maturing ambitions and ideals? To one who has dedicated her life to the guidance of young people we dedicate this, our 1953 Pioneer Annual. More than a teacher, she is an understanding counselor and a dear friend. Our gratitude can only' be expressed with thanks for the debt we owe her- for we love and revere our Miss Brierton. And on that cheek and o'er that brow l So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, . . . l Where thought serenely sweet express How pure, how dear their dwelling place . . . F9135 It's a warm, sunny day. You slowly saunter to school, happy summer memories crowding your thoughts. Despite the rapidity of vacation, you look forward to the coming school days and reunion with friends. There! You can see the school now, the campus just coming into view - the field house, the playing field - and there are Mary and Joe, waving to you! As you hurry your footsteps, it seems as if Juneau is actually beckoning you to come to it. Entering the front door, as you see the old familiar foyer, a nostalgic feeling grips you. What fun this new year will bring! What accomplishments! After the excitement of meeting your new teachers and classmates, you settle down to study. Gradually the green leaves turn to brilliant hues of red and yellow, and fall from the trees. Comes the Hrst snow with swirls of white, and Winter is really here! Each day brings increased knowledge, new understanding, novel experiences. The last snow melts, revealing promises of spring to come- tiny green sprouts, daring to lift their heads above the cold earth. As they grow, so do you, and finally June arrives, greeted by a splendor of blooms and blossoms in riotous color. The last day of school is here. Mixed emotions fill you - the sorrow of parting with dear friends - the joy of anticipating the coming summer. On your lingering stroll home, you reminisce over the happenings of your busy school year. 1 , .V . gg fig ELIAS N. LANE, Principal Sometimes it is wise to glance backwardg to look at the terrain we have trav- elled. We at Juneau completed a good year which began with the Jolly jinks. We have taken an over-all school test and as a result improved our program of instruction. We have had a most successful parent conference night based upon this test program. We have reached a new high in criticless honor study halls. We have instituted a new venture in' vocational guidance- the first of its kind. Yes, the terrain has had challenge and success. A long road lies ahead and I wish each of you Godspeed on your journey. ELms N. LANE. JOHANNA GEIL, Vive-Principal Let me bzlt do my work from day to day, In field or forest, at the desk or loom, In roaring market place or tranquil rooms Let me bat find it in my heart to say, When uagrant wishes beckon me astray: This is my workg my blessing, not my doomg Of all who live, I am the one by whom This work can best be done in the right way? Then shall I see it not too great, nor small, To suit my spirit and to prove my powers. Then shall I cheerful greet the laboring hours And cheerful turn, when the long shadows fall, At euentide, to play and love and rest, Because I know for me my work is best. I - Henry van Dyke. Our harassed engineer, in desperation, calls a detective, a fearless fellow, a follower of fine footsteps. Eagerly Fearless hurries to our aid and closely examines the footprints. After conferring with the office and teaching staffs he approaches countless students in a heroic attempt to find the mark-maker quickly! No waste- basket is left unturned! Preparing the musical back- ground for our Jamboree and Class Play proved not only a duty, but a joy. The orchestra, after winning Hrst place honors in a city-wide orchestra tournament last year, went on to play at concerts, commencements, plays, etc. At the formal Winter Concert, featuring Concertmaster Jan Smith, as solo violinist, the orchestra's performance was greeted with approval by all spectators. The highlight of the 52-53 season came early in the conference season when the Pioneers defeated a highly rated Rufus King team by a top heavy margin. SNOW BALL I JUNIOR PROM over the Junior Prom were King Tony Wallner and Queen Sherrol Zuehl, sur- rounded by their royal court with Prince and Princess Tom Oberhofer and Joyce Flint. The theme, Stardust, was artfully por- trayed in decorations, while the music of Aaron's Melody Masters fittingly became the occasion. Topping the evening with food and entertainment was the Post Prom party held at the Allis-Chalmers Club House. The Snow Ball, our first semi-formal dance of the year, was promoted by the Student Council. Presided over by Tom Schaefer, council, and Elizabeth Allen, the dance was one of our largest social affairs. Music was provided by Aaron's Melody Masters, decorations lent a snowy at- mosphere to our gymnasium, and rustling formals and tailored suits made a festive occasion of this, our first win- ter formal.
