Q' ' 1 2 . f Jmewmpt Solomon Juneau High School proudly bears the name ofthe man who founded the great industrial city in which we now live. To those early beginnings of more than a century ago he brought the spirit and activity of a true pioneer. He was a man of vision who looked to the future with hope and confidence. He was undaunted by the dangers and hardships ot an unexplored wilderness. He gloried in the unending toil and labor of opening up a new home for his countrymen. He was not afraid ol the unknown and the untried. The Juneau High School of l95l is the inheritor of this pioneering spirit. lt is evident in some of the things the school has done to adopt educational op- portunities to the individual needs of young men and women. Without this spirit there can be little progress in any area of life, May the sons and daughters of this school carry forward into adult and community life the ideals of the true pioneer. Harold S, Vincent, Superintendent of Schools This 1951 Pioneer Annual is dedi- cared fo the progressive pioneering spirif commonly known cis the Juneau Spirit . Moy it be ever present in the holls of our school, Solomon Juneau. 4 NIP 2,1 y ...r Mid-century year! This momentous year in a momentous age shouts, remember me! Our '51 Pioneer Yearbook captures mo- ments we would remember as an inspiration and guide to those finer moments of greatness L yet to be. A great man is what he is, because of what he was. Elias N. Lane, Principal Phyllis Hentz, Secretary Mary Rose Galiato Secretary 6 Friendly cooperation is the spirit ot Juneau. From the early days in the barracks to this, the twenty-first year of the existence of our school, students and faculty have worked together to make Juneau a good place for living and learning. The experience at Juneau should tit our students to be good citizens who will be ever ready to cooperate to make this world a better world for all mankind. At Christmas time the choir presented a selection ot carols and Santo Claus appeared in a drarnatizotion ol ' Twas the Night Betore Christmas. Mr J. Kielgoard the author at Big Red and other popular clog stories, gave a lecture. We also enjoyed a music appreciation program given by three experienced musicians trorn Chicago University A startling explosion was tl'-e climax at a program on tire prevention by Mr. I. F. Statz. Dancing Electrons' was the tlieme'at o talk by Mr C. E. Jones, We were actually able to see music when he played records and caused colored lights to glow. Even an Induan chief paid us a visit. Chrel Minnesota came to tell us the ideals of the American lndion. Mr. Kurt Singer told us ol the adventures ot an underground agent. Some Juneau students took us on on imaginary trip to Hawaii. At each Open House, the students present a program for their porentsy in this case, it was a swing ballet. A semi-annual event is Honor Doy, when high scholarship and good character are recognized Actor John Scanlon portrayed several of the most widely known and best, loved characters from literature, Our rhythmics class showed its dancers in a 'Pep meeting '. In reviewing the semester convo- catians, we realize how fortunate we are in having the variety offered by Juneau. -. 69 It is evident that everybody enloyed themselves at Mr Vincents teo Mr. Vincent, the new superintendent of schools, is greeted by Mr. Sigurdson. Miss Bannon ot Green Boy Avenue School looks on ot the Yeo given in O SOVG , Vincent's honor. ur Senior Girls' Club also spon- d o tea to promote membership. The semi-onnuol Senior Tea was held December 4. The l2B's were host to the January graduating class. All the sparkling personalities of Juneau attended the Snow Ball. Pic- tured here are Judy Rust and Bill Simonoff, Beverly Bolyanatz and Dick Jensen, and Torn Schaefer and Sunny Seelye. An all over picture of the dance shows why the Snow Ball was one of the most successful social events of the year. lg ,iw W- 'L 0 S 45- V Rclgnvng as king and queen or the Junlor Prom, Moy l9, l95l, were Jim Myers and Ardelle Weston. U-Rah-Rah, T-EVA-M es., Track is not considered a minor sport by us here at Juneau. To be a member of the team a boy has to be in excellent physical condition. To help themselves keep lit, many of our boys participate in track, golf, tennis, gym team, and intraf mural basketball. 82 Cheerleading plays o maior part in most sports and requires the same diligent practice. Gym team is one of Juneau's proudest possessions and we show it off every chance we get. Juneau's snappy tennis team is last becoming quite 0 contender for city honors. For our girls there are many interesting sports of which volleyball and field hockey are the most popular. 83 .Q-M - fcxg if ..,g.3.csi'5s4'?g1'si5Q5 A wr, s sd,A , msg 55:44 v sf' it 1'1C2f5'2i if' alK5x91?1 ' W 1 9 , fm u .....4... x i .c.f, flu? ,f I i ,5,g.f5,i:sig iij is N F , t N cs M 5Q,,, X M X W Vw fmiifmff Mm ,W 9 J,M aghiwd, Avy ,Q , .
