Each year the senior class gradu- ates and leaves with the ex- periences of four rewarding years. As the seniors gradu- ate in June, a great number of freshmen are awaiting in eager anticipation to enter high school. New teachers come to Soldan each year re- placing the teachers who have left. They bring with them new backgrounds, new skills, and new experiences. Every few years all old books are replaced by new books which teach in newer and better ways. Along with this tutorial change, there has been a change in the building itself. Improvements have been made and new lockers have been installed around the school. Yes, Soldan has changed in many ways, but through all the changes, the exuberant spirit which Soldan instills in its students and faculty remains the same. The advisor's door opens promptly at 8:40 a.m. During this time, attendance pro- grams, absence notes, early dismissals, and other forms relative to the individual are processed. The advisee is informed about scheduled events, both curricular and extra-curricular. He is aided in working out the problems by an interested advisor, and is encouraged to do his best in representing his advisory group in the school. As a tempering influence, the advisory en- ables students to adjust to the educational atmosphere before classes commence. After visiting with friends and reviewing last night's homework, the advisory period is over at 9:00 a.m. The advisee begins his class day. The student then moves from class to class until it is time for lunch. There are many dif- ferent classes which the student may take on these periods before lunch, such as classes in the fields of science, mathematics, history, physical education, English, foreign lan- guagesiand practical arts. Usually by his lunch period, the student is quite eager to eat, meet and talk with friends in the auditorium and lower hall area, and perhaps catch up on some of his studying or homework. After lunch the student resumes his vari- ous classes. The student continues through these classes until the end of his active day. This is a day in the life of a student of Soldan. l 2 .A .. .,.,,.. Nelson, Principal of Soldan High School, attended South- ern Illinois University where he re- ceived his Bachelor of Arts degree. He then enrolled at the University of Illinois where he received his Masters degree in Chemistry. A Mr. Nelson's deep feeling of the responsibility he has assumed for the past three years are best expressed in his following statement: Through the years Soldan has had a rich tradition serving as a beacon light to the West End Community. As we reflect on the school's con- tribution by decades from 1917 to l967, we challenge you, fine Soldan- ites who are graduating this year, to strive unceasingly to find worthwhile places fog yourselves in the main stream of mankind. We trust that you will go forth with your minds fixed on attainable goals, looking for- ward to a monumental year in l967 as a result of your endeavors. It is so good to have been made rich because of contacts with you. Further, it is our desire to look with optimism to the contributions your lives will make for the better- ment of our community and all humanity. MR. JOHN A. The representatives are chosen by the student body. The duty of the Student Council is to talk to the counselors, find out what is happening around the school, and bring the information back to ad- visory. They help other organizations and activ- ities to raise money for necessary purposes and try to set an example of good' citizenship for the students. From time to time the representatives meet in the auditorium to discuss and plan worthwhile school activities for the benefit of the school. At their meetings they also discuss problems of Soldan and how to solve them. The Student Council urges students to voice suggestions and criticism for a better Soldan through their representatives. Have you ever won- dered how we obtain colored pages in the Scrip, or just what goes into the making of Scrip? The year- book staff, after receiving a grade on the previous yearbook, undertook to learn the answers to these and many other questions. Such as how to crop pictures to make a better looking page and how to use them in the new 1967 Scrzp. But planning the yearbook is not an easy task. There must be organization skill, and manage- ment. Under the sponsorship of Mrs. Bobette James, the yearbook staff works cautiously-wrib ing copy, which is proof-read by Miss Theresa Shannon, cropping pictures, arranging double-page spread, and doing innumerable other tasks which lead to a completed yearbook. In spite of deadlines , the staff has had a pleasant time producing this book and sincerely hope that you enjoy this annual pictorial account ofthe year's happenings. The sales staff, which promotes sales and distri- bution ofthe yearbook, is under the sponsorship of Mrs. Ruth Morgan. This staff is essential because without it the Scrip would not reach its eventual destinations, to the students of Soldan. Distributive Education prepares students to serve in those occupations in which 33fZn of the population is employed. Distributive occupation are those in which workers are employed for the purpose of making available to consume the goods and services produced by others. This subject is taught at Soldan and is meaningful to those students who are interest- ed in entering the world of business. It is presented on a yearly basis. The objective of the courses are to acquaint the students with the great potential em- ployment opportunities in the field of distribution and to help take advantage ofthese opportunities. Tor further these objectives, an auditorium pro- gram was presented for the entire student body to introduce them to both the participants in this pro- gram and their employers. The Distributive Educa- tion Department hoped to promote the thinking of the undergraduates concerning such a program for their senior year. Only twelfth grade students who are employable and at least 16 years of age are eli- gible to participate in this school work program which involves one-half day or four periods at school and one-half day or 15 hours minimum on the job. This program is carried on under the super- vision of the school board and the school adminis- tration with the help and co-operation of the local business community. Mr. Emerson C. King serves as coordinator. One of their most successful and cultural events which was given on Saturday, January 14, 1966 was a Roman Banquet. The theme of this gave the members of the Latin Club an oppor- tunity to dress in Roman attire, eat Roman style, and participate in various Roman games.
