It was in this year that Mr. Iohn Rush Powell retired after heading our school for twenty years. He then became assistant super- intendent of high schools. Mr. Stellwagen became principal and served until 1946, when he was succeeded by Mr. Ben Barr. At this time there were 3123 students ennrolled. To- day there are 1582. The first year of the school there had been 1150. In the autumn of 1948 the Blewett High School building was needed by Harris Teach- ers College. Therefore, Soldan and Blewett merged to form the Soldan-Blewett High School. Then the colors maroon and gold were chosen. .Mafory ln 1950 one of Soldan's finest traditions originated. During the Korean War an out- standing Soldan graduate was killed. This man, Tom Lombardo, who graduated in l941, was a star in three fields here at Soldan. He Won many awards for outstanding skill in football. He had a brilliant mind. ln every respect Tom was a gentleman. Two of his former classmates made it possible that Sol- danians will not forget Tom Lombardo. They subscribed money for a plaque which now hangs in the hall at Soldan. Each year a name is added to it, honoring the boy who most lives up to the standards set by Tom Lombardo as athlete, scholar, and gentleman. There are now ten names on this plaque. ln 1954 Mr. Stanley Hill succeeded Mr. Ben Barr as principal, then Mr. Glynn Clark in 19567 Mr. Otto Rost in 1957. ln the year 1955 the school's name was changed back to Soldan. ln this same year a transition took place which we now consider part of our daily lives. The Supreme Court called it integration: we call it brotherhood. This year of. 1959 marks a new accomplish- ment in the Soldan record. The first Phillip 1. Hickey Sportsmanship Award for football was presented to Soldan this year. We are particularly proud of this since it represents the combined efforts of the entire student body and faculty. .jvhaiorg Through the years many performances were given by our various music and dramatic groups. Some of these were very great productions and one was even a St. Louis premiere. THE TEMPEST by Shakespeare was presented here in the year l92l by the drama group under the direction of Miss Iennie M. A. Iones. This was the first time that! the play had ever been presented in St. Louis. One other outstanding play was a Miracle Play given in the early years of Soldan. In this play angels were needed, so the thespians constructed a plat- form on scaffolding over the stage and the angels were thus shown in heaven. Among the other plays presented were several Shakes- pearean comedies: AS YOU LIKE IT, TAMING OF THE SHREW, A COMEDY OF ERRORS, and a spectacular production of MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM given in Forest Park in the year 1916 as a celebration of the Shakespear- ean Tercentenary. The musical programs included MARTHA, THE FIREFLY, H.M.S. PINAFORE, NEW MOON, and NAUGHTY MARIETTA. THE MIKADO was given in 1929 as a part of the Twentieth Anniversary celebration. Ten Malvolio . . . Twelfth Night Only five years after the opening of school the First World War broke out. Out of the number of Soldan alumni and undergradu- ates, nearly seven hundred boys joined naval or military service. Younger boys ineligible for military service joined the automotive corps of the Red Cross. The girls at home, by no means inactive, sold Liberty Bonds and rolled bandages. Some of the faculty worked as translators or as field Workers in the med- ical corps. Let us not forget a bronze tablet which is in the corridor of the school. lt bears twenty names-The Roll of Honor. Soldan sons and daughters were to go through two more wars, helping, serving, and often giving their lives for their country. In the year 1929 our school was twenty years old and a pageant was given to cele- brate this anniversary. This presentation, MEMORIES OF TWENTY YEARS, was a story told in a royal manner depicting Soldan's history from 1909 to 1929.
