jackfiono .xdcfiuifiw .SQWL4 The motto of the school was chosen by Mr. Iohn Rush Powell, the first principal. He quoted from The Canterbury Tales by Chau- cer. Trouthe, Honour, Fredom, Curteisye from the description of the knight became the motto of Soldan. At this same time a committee of students and faculty members had chosen twelve dif- ferent combinations of colors, one of which was to become the symbol of our school. Then the school body voted on the colors, and after an exciting vote the victorious col- ors, gold and brown, were hung in the hall for all to see. The school was soon organized and the students began to wish for sports and clubs. lt was at this time that extracurricular activi- ties at Soldan began. The clubs organized in the first years had many features which we do not think of today. Among these organizations were the Hiking Club, the Pickering or Astronomy Club, and the Mandolin Club. These were only a few of the interesting clubs. Today our list in- cludes such activities as Chess Club, Science and Math, and Tumbling. The ideas are the same, tumbling and hiking for sport, science and math and Pickering for new knowledge, and chess and mandolin for pleasure. Soldan has always been an outstanding school in the field of sports. ln the very first year of its existence Soldan organized teams and in l9lU won both the tennis and swim- ming meets. In the year 1913 we won our first football championship. This was not the last time for our teams. The Tigers were champs again in, '14, '19, '21, '25, '28, '29, '38, '4O.
