He held successively the positions of teacher, rassisltant superintendent, principal of the nor- mal school, principal of the hiqh school, and ' P s superintendent. i We may .speak ot Dr. Soldan as the founder of lthisfschool. Long before the site was pur- chased and the plans for the buildinq were be-dun, this school in its approximate location. with its approximate appointments existed as an 'ideal in the mind ot Dr, Soldan. Even the 'auestion of finding a name for this school was under his consideration a stew weeks before his' death. ' V 1 . Di. He quoted from The Canterbury Tales by Chau- cer. Trouthe, Honour, Fredom, Curteisye from the description of the knight became the motto of Soldan. At this same time a committee of students and faculty members had chosen twelve dif- ferent combinations of colors, one of which was to become the symbol of our school. Then the school body voted on the colors, and after an exciting vote the victorious col- ors, gold and brown, were hung in the hall for all to see. The school was soon organized and the students began to wish for sports and clubs. lt was at this time that extracurricular activi- ties at Soldan began. The clubs organized in the first years had many features which we do not think of today. Among these organizations were the Hiking Club, the Pickering or Astronomy Club, and the Mandolin Club. These were only a few of the interesting clubs. Today our list in- cludes such activities as Chess Club, Science and Math, and Tumbling. The ideas are the same, tumbling and hiking for sport, science and math and Pickering for new knowledge, and chess and mandolin for pleasure. Soldan has always been an outstanding school in the field of sports. ln the very first year of its existence Soldan organized teams and in l9lU won both the tennis and swim- ming meets. In the year 1913 we won our first football championship. This was not the last time for our teams. The Tigers were champs again in, '14, '19, '21, '25, '28, '29, '38, '4O. The basketball championship was ours eight times and we led the league in tennis nineteen times. ,Malory Physics Class Hiking Club G.A.A. Soccer Nine .jvhaiorg Through the years many performances were given by our various music and dramatic groups. Some of these were very great productions and one was even a St. Louis premiere. THE TEMPEST by Shakespeare was presented here in the year l92l by the drama group under the direction of Miss Iennie M. A. Iones. This was the first time that! the play had ever been presented in St. Louis. One other outstanding play was a Miracle Play given in the early years of Soldan. In this play angels were needed, so the thespians constructed a plat- form on scaffolding over the stage and the angels were thus shown in heaven. Among the other plays presented were several Shakes- pearean comedies: AS YOU LIKE IT, TAMING OF THE SHREW, A COMEDY OF ERRORS, and a spectacular production of MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM given in Forest Park in the year 1916 as a celebration of the Shakespear- ean Tercentenary. The musical programs included MARTHA, THE FIREFLY, H.M.S. PINAFORE, NEW MOON, and NAUGHTY MARIETTA. THE MIKADO was given in 1929 as a part of the Twentieth Anniversary celebration. Ten Malvolio . . . Twelfth Night Only five years after the opening of school the First World War broke out. Out of the number of Soldan alumni and undergradu- ates, nearly seven hundred boys joined naval or military service. Younger boys ineligible for military service joined the automotive corps of the Red Cross. The girls at home, by no means inactive, sold Liberty Bonds and rolled bandages. Some of the faculty worked as translators or as field Workers in the med- ical corps. Let us not forget a bronze tablet which is in the corridor of the school. lt bears twenty names-The Roll of Honor. Soldan sons and daughters were to go through two more wars, helping, serving, and often giving their lives for their country. In the year 1929 our school was twenty years old and a pageant was given to cele- brate this anniversary. This presentation, MEMORIES OF TWENTY YEARS, was a story told in a royal manner depicting Soldan's history from 1909 to 1929. It was in this year that Mr. Iohn Rush Powell retired after heading our school for twenty years. He then became assistant super- intendent of high schools. Mr. Stellwagen became principal and served until 1946, when he was succeeded by Mr. Ben Barr. At this time there were 3123 students ennrolled. To- day there are 1582. The first year of the school there had been 1150. In the autumn of 1948 the Blewett High School building was needed by Harris Teach- ers College. Therefore, Soldan and Blewett merged to form the Soldan-Blewett High School. Then the colors maroon and gold were chosen. .Mafory ln 1950 one of Soldan's finest traditions originated. During the Korean War an out- standing Soldan graduate was killed. This man, Tom Lombardo, who graduated in l941, was a star in three fields here at Soldan. He Won many awards for outstanding skill in football. He had a brilliant mind. ln every respect Tom was a gentleman. Two of his former classmates made it possible that Sol- danians will not forget Tom Lombardo. They subscribed money for a plaque which now hangs in the hall at Soldan. Each year a name is added to it, honoring the boy who most lives up to the standards set by Tom Lombardo as athlete, scholar, and gentleman. There are now ten names on this plaque. ln 1954 Mr. Stanley Hill succeeded Mr. Ben Barr as principal, then Mr. Glynn Clark in 19567 Mr. Otto Rost in 1957. ln the year 1955 the school's name was changed back to Soldan. ln this same year a transition took place which we now consider part of our daily lives. The Supreme Court called it integration: we call it brotherhood. This year of. 1959 marks a new accomplish- ment in the Soldan record. The first Phillip 1. Hickey Sportsmanship Award for football was presented to Soldan this year. We are particularly proud of this since it represents the combined efforts of the entire student body and faculty. Among these have been men and women who have been successful in many different fields. The feeling of being a senior does not change even as the years pass, There is always that thrill of partici- pation in the activities, and the an- ticipation of coming graduation. The feeling of expectation is always there. One never knows what the future may hold, but it can always appear bright, This is the end of one life and the beginning of another. Piftyeeight We dedicate the following sec- tion ot the book to those boys and girls who have entered into athletics here at Soldan. These students not only participate in the games but also work toward better school spirit. This is that intangible something which adds zest to the school and which binds the school together. These students also show a great deal ot loyalty which brings honor to them and also to the student body. These boys and girls have learned the value ot teamwork, the necessity ot courage, and the rewards ot good sportsmanship. They have added to Soldan's proud name. ln turn, we honor them in this SCRH3. Sixty-one Holt, Preslar, Cole, Walsch, Carrothers, Anthonies, Ogle, McDonald. CAQQPLQJQPJ Here at Soldan school spirit and cheerlead- ers are synonymous. The eight cheerleaders are present at football and basketball games and other sports to let our teams know that we are behind them all the Way. They also cheer at aud sessions and generally promote school spirit. ln order to be a cheerleader the girls must be good citizens, loyal supporters of all ath- letic teams, have a C average, and have cheerleading ability. Each year when some of the girls graduate there are tryouts held in order to find other girls to take their places. After intensive training by the old cheer- leaders in the fine art of cheering, jumping, etc., a tryout is held. The new cheerleaders are chosen and introduced in an aud session. Miss Elvira Grundmann, the very capable sponsor of the cheerleaders, has completed her last year in this capacity. The cheer- leaders Wish to thank her for her guidance and help during the past three years. FALL CAPTAIN - - Priscilla McDonald Pretty as cz picture! SPRING CAPTAIN - - - ICIIHC9 Walsch Sixty-two The Lettermen's Club was organized six years ago for the purpose of helping the school's athletic program. lt is now under the sponsorship of Coach W. O. Sanders. This season was one oi action for the Let- termen. At the present they are making plans for a variety show in order to raise money for the traditional Athletic Banquet. One of the chief functions of this organiza- tion is to instill in each member a feeling of pride in himself and his school. In the future it is hoped that this club will serve as a stimulus and will motivate more boys into coming out for sports of all kinds. Good sportsmanship and good citizenship go hand in hand. To reach these ideals is the main goal of this club. OFFICERS FALL President ...........,.... ............. .........,..... B o b Corno Vice-President ........ .......... Sanders stated that this year's team, a senior squad, was the dream of every coach. This was to be our year, and most appropriately, too, since this is our fiftieth anniversary. As their first test of '58 the Tigers outscored Central in a non-league contest, 12.-O. For our first league game we tied the fine Beau- mont squad, l-4-14. That Very exciting game was tied up in the last few moments by Bob Corno. The other Soldan tally was on a 30 yd. pass from sophomore quarterback Wright to end Willis Crenshaw. The Sumner Bulldogs were the next to meet defeat at the hands of our dream team. For their biggest point total in thirteen years the boys trounced O'Fallon, 34-O. In the touch- down column were Corno and Brown, who scored two apiece, and Thomas Williams with one. ln the Southwest game all looked lost early in the first quarter when a Longhorn quick kick put the ball in our possession on our own one-yard line. The Tigers exploded with a short pass to Robert Brown from quarterback Henderson on the ten-yard line. In a beau- tiful run, Brown surprised Southwest and took the ball 90 yards for a touchdown. The Hadley Golden Lions shattered our dreams of a perfect season with a 44-U trounc- ing. After this overwhelming defeat the Tigers, still dazed, lost to McKinley, l9-O, and to Vashon, 7-6. This was a very disappointing end to one of our best seasons in several years. Although we did not place anyone on the All-District team, four Tigers were honored in All-Public High positions. Those chosen were: William Cole, tackle, Charles Brown, guard: Robert Brown, halfbackg and Willis Crenshaw, end. Other outstanding gridiron men were: Dan Mohrman, end: Ierry Henderson, quarter- back, and Allyn Hinton, guard. The 1958 co-captains were Ierry Henderson and William Cole. Earl Dela Roche again rolled up a fine defensive record as line coach. The won-lost facts below do not show that Soldan was first in the league in first downs gained, third in passing, and fifth in defense. TOM LOMBARDO AWARD This award was begun by several of Tom Lornbarolo's classmates who felt that he should not be forgotten by the students of our high school. Tom, who graduated in 1941, was known as an outstanding athlete, scholar, soldier, and gentleman, and when he was killed in the Korean War, his friends honored him by subscribing money for a plaque which now hangs in the hall at Soldan. Each year a name is added to the plaque, honoring the boy who best lives up to the standards set by Tom as athlete, scholar, and gentleman. There are now ten names on this plaque. As a football player here at Soldan, Torn was awarded the Iames M. Gould Trophy, which signifies the most valuable player in the St. Louis District. In l944, Torn captained West Point's eleven to nine straight victories, and the Notre Dame Club twice honored him for his outstanding play. Sixty-six .fdfkcfic .fdwarcb THE PHILLIP I. HICKEY SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD This year a new trophy joined the ranks at Soldan. The Phillip I. Hickey Sportsmanship Award for Football was awarded to Soldan in December, l958. lt was presented in an auditorium session by Mr. Hickey, Superin- tendent of Instruction of the St. Louis Public Schools. This award is based on the votes of all the schools played during the season. Before the season began, a Code of Sportsmanship was drawn up by representative students, coaches, and administrators of various schools in the area. This code set up standards for coaches, administrators, players, cheerleaders, and spectators. At the games each school was rated by its opponents in each of these five fields. Soldan's over-all average rating was 97.57, representing the judgment of all the schools we played. FIRST ROW: Merchant, Batchman, Vanderford, Slay, Thompson, Taylor, McDowell. SECOND ROW: Daniels, Friedman, Hudson, Burroughs, Brown, jackson, Joseph, Sprouse. Z?aaLefLaf Soldan's basketball season was one with some few bright spots. Although the team only won four games out of fifteen, it con- sistently worried its opponents. In the first game of the season, we were defeated by De Andreis with a score of 39-34. The second meeting was a victory for the Tigers, who avenged their earlier loss by earn- ing 54 points over De Andreis' 46. The Tigers realized their potentials by Win- ning three out of their next four games. They defeated Southwest, De Andreis, and Central. The only loss of that series was to Beaumont, the Public High League Champions. In these games the team showed good organization and co-operative spirit. Many of the players scored in double figures. ln our final victory, the Bengals scored 67 points against Ferguson's 64. In this game 28 points were scored by Preston Vanderford, who was Soldan's leading scorer. The '58-'59 season ended when Beaumont scored 70 points over our 24 points. This eliminated us from the State competition. Although We may be down, we are not out. There is always next year. As a result of having only three return- ing lettermen, sophomores and juniors will fill the ranks, thus gaining invaluable ex- perience. Returning lettermen Thurman Stevens, first base: Earl Dye, center field: and lim Shirey, pitcher, will again hold down these positions. Newcomers Ioe Hamilton, third base: Walter Beasley, shortstop, Frank Pickens, second base: and Paul Ecks, catcher, will constitute the in- field. Co-Captain Earl Dye will receive help in the outfield from novices Donald Robinson in left field and lim Kitrel in right field. Our somewhat inexperienced but deter- mined team dropped the season opener, a practice game, to always-tough Hadley Tech. 8-2. Next Lutheran jumped out to an early lead only to have the Tigers fight back to Sixty-eight a 7-7 tie. A lapse in defense cost us the 10-7 ballgame. After losing an extra-inning game to the O'Fallon Hornets, lU-5, the boys really showed their stuff by staying with an ex- cellent Central team. The lead changed hands several times in the contest with the Redwings coming out on top, 7-5. We compensated for this last disappointing loss with one win which brings the Tiger won- lost record to l-4. Our only win, thus far, was over Sumner, 13-ll. Second baseman Frank Pickens hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning. Thurman Stevens Was the Win- ning pitcher. Considering the rebuilding being done this year, Coach Gordon has great expectations for the remaining portion of this season and also for the seasons to come. 3-ac FIRST ROW: Davis, Lewis, Sykes, Collier, Hornsby, Williams, Iackson, jones, Robinson. SECOND ROW: Teasley, Lee, Long, Thompson, Alexander, Jones, Sisson, Waterford, Boxx, Ledbetter. THIRD ROW: Brooks, Daniels, Hinton, White, Gordon, Kikis, Wilkins, Iohnson, Borden. FOURTH ROW: Mann, Hamilton, Ford, Moore, Hammons. Williams, Simmons, Davis, McKinnis, Tatum, Williams. FIFTH ROW: Harris, Wells, Byrd, Abernathy, McDowell, Herman, Blackwell, Page, Harris I., Jackson, Bohlen, Robinson. The Soldan Track Squad of last year did exceptionally well after the publication of the REFLECTOR. In retrospect the Tigers showed their superiority over the Public League teams by tying for third in the State Outdoor Meet at Columbia. Kansas City Southwest and Kirkwood placed first and second, respective- ly, while our tie was with Ladue. Those track- men who gained honors in the finals were: Willis Crenshaw, pole vault, tie for first Knew Missouri state recordl: Leander Moore, high jump, third: Percy Brown, 880, third: 880 relay, second Uackson, Thompson, Herndon, Wil- liamsl. The l958 team was the best produced here at Soldan in the last twenty-five years. Coach Sanders and the boys this year have great expectations for the current season. After a disappointing Indoor State Meet, which was won by the Beaumont Blue lackets, our Cindermen racked up five straight victories and are, to this writing, undefeated in dual meet competition. The first to fall under the weight of the high scoring Cindermen were the Bulldogs of Sumner, in the first meet 63-62, and later in the season, 109-82. Next, as the tracksters gained almost every first and second, was Southwest, 130 2X3-54 lf'3. As a warmup for the Maplewood Relays, we downed Central, 138-49. At Maplewood the team placed fourth in the AA division, with the following finalists: Walt Collier, high jump and pole vault, third and a tie for first, respectively: 440 and 880 relays, second CHornsby, A. lackson, Ford, W. Iacksonl: Henry Long, broad jump, third: Wen- dell Iackson, 100 yard dash, third. After this successful showing the Tigers trounced the Golden Lions of Hadley Tech., lll-83. Wesley Hornsby seems to be the excep- tional junior sprinter in the area and is, at present, undefeated in his specialties. Other prominent competitors are Charles Iones, sen- ior hurdles: Albert Ledbetter, 440 dash: Her- man Gary, 120 low hurdles: lames Abernathy and Iohn Lee, mile: Rich Daniels, shot put: Frazier Alexander, 880: and the senior 880 and 440 relays. All in all, we have the makings of a top rate team which should finish very high in the state ratings. Sixty-nine TENNIS TEAM FIRST ROW: Blank, Bleeck- ert, Applebaum. SECOND ROW: Franklin, Ienkins, Mur- ray, Kimbrough. CROSS-COUN TRY by, Kuykendall, Lee, Young SECOND ROW: Evans, Williams enniri The 1958 Soldan Tennis Team had a fairly successful season under the able leadership of Coach Harry White. ln their first meet the Soldan racqueteers swamped O'Fallon 5-0. They continued their winning ways by defeating Sumner and Central by scores of 4-1. However, their luck did not hold out, as they lost to Beaumont and Cleveland. They returned to form against Roosevelt and McKinley, dropping the first 2-3 and winning the second by the same score. The final standing found the Tigers in fifth place in the P.H.L. with l8 won and 22 lost. Ronald Bleeckert was chosen captain. Other returning lettermen were Marshall Applebaum and Bill Blank. New lettermen included Dan- iel Murray, first singles: Charles Kimbrough, second singles: Erwin Franklin and Adrian Ienkins in second doubles. Seventy nathy. row-Counfry Under the supervision of Coach Thorn Smith our cross-country team ended its second sea- son tyinq Central and Southwest for sixth place in the P.H.L. of eleven schools. Although they fell slightly short of qualifying for the state meet, the Harriers ran over their old rival, McKinley, in addition to Roosevelt, Southwest, and O'Fallon. On the two mile Forest Park course, which cuts through six baseball fields, two football fields, a soccer field, a horse corral, and around a five-eighths mile lake, the tearn maintained a splendid four and two record for the greater part of the season, but allowed themselves to be defeated in all of their last four meets. This year's lettermen are Iames Abernathy, lohn Lee, Frazier Alexander, Bob Kuykendall, Ron Lewis, Glennon Evans, and Marlyn Young. Thus it is one of the oldest clubs at Soldan. It is now sponsored by Miss Valena Broussard and Mrs. Ioy Miller. TENNIS - BADMINTON CLUB G.A.A. enables interested girls to participate in various sports and to learn better the reg- ulations of the games played in the gym classes. The club itself teaches leadership, sportsmanship, and teamwork. There are many activities sponsored by this organization. Among them are the Cake and Coke Sale, and the Faculty-Student games. Goals to be reached in G.A.A. are to let- ter or be awarded a pin. In order to obtain a small pin, a girl must earn 750 points. 1250 points plus 100 service points are required before a large letter is awarded. The hiqh- est award that the G.A.A. bestows is given to term 8 girls only. Before receiving this i Seventy-two honor, a girl must have to her credit 8 full terms of active membership in the club and 100 service points earned during the senior year. The Officials Club, another function of G.A.A., is composed of girls who wish to learn how to referee various sports. The girls meet every Tuesday evening after school and both oral and written tests are given. When the written test is passed, a chevron is awarded. The most important function of this club is to furnish referees for the various sports, but it, too, teaches good sportsmanship and team- work. A new addition to G.A.A. is the Tumbling Club. It is under the sponsorship of Mrs. Ioy Miller. The girls meet every Monday after school. Here they are trained in tumbling and the use of apparatus. ir 5 .Afhdfic .xdddociafion G.A.A. Seventy-six We, the students of Soldan High School, in order to provide experiences and to secure the benefits ot training in good citizenship: to encourage the spirit of co-operation: to strengthen our loyalty to the ideals ot our motto: and to promote the general Welfare of our school, do hereby establish a student council for Soldan High School. So reads the constitution of our Student Council. The Council itself is an elected group which represents the student body. Members are selected by the students through their advis- ories. Each advisory elects one representa- tive, and one alternate to serve in case ot the representative's absence. The president and vice-president are elected by the complete student body. The executive committee serves as the nominating committee and prepares a slate of several students tor the positions. After being cleared by the office, the students running tor these posts carry on campaigns which are climaxed in an aud session with speeches by the can- didates. The other officers are elected in the council itself. The representatives are assigned to committees Where the real Work of the council is done. During the past year the council sponsored various activities such as a St. Patrick's Day dance, several aud. sessions lone of which was on tire preventionl, and the selling of the lnformer. The council also planned special activities in accordance with our tit- tieth anniversary, Among these is a Student Council trip, a student of the year, and in conjunction with the l..ettermen's Club, 'a, track queen. Although the council is run by the students themselves, credit should be given to Mr. Gummersheirner tor his guidance as sponsor of this organization. First we chose to use the former name of our yearbook in commemoration of the Fiftieth Anniversary. We used a reproduction of the first cover which displays our school motto. Also in honor of our anniversary, a history was com- piled and Written, and historical pictures were assembled. Thus we have tried to paint a true picture of Soldan. SCHIP was first published in Iune of 1910. lust a small book with paper covers, it was a most valuable contribution to the life of the school. The yearbook and newspaper were named in an auditorium session by Mr. Iohn Rush Powell. He quoted from Shake- speare's AS YOU LIKE IT, Not with bag and baggage but with SCRIP and SCRIPPAGET These two names were used until the i948 Sol- dan-Blewett merger. Then the names were Seventy-eight changed and SCHIP became REFLECTOR. The publishing of a yearbook is a difficult and never-ending task. Pictures are taken and then identified and placed in the dum- my. After senior pictures are taken, they are arranged in the proper order and sent to the engraver. The copy for these is then gathered and typed. The articles are Written and proofread: they are then sent to the printer. The campaign is begun and sub- scriptions are taken. Now the work is almost at its culmination. This year many Soldanians have worked on the yearbook behind the scenes. So, with the gratitude to these and deep thanks to our co-sponsors, Miss Grundmann and Mr. Gasslander, we present to you the l959 SCHIP. The Editor crila nalari A11 strc1ight??? SCRIP Skit. Under the spon- sorship ot Miss Blanche Higgins, it is com- posed of students who Wish to contribute their unassigned periods to serving the school. Through the united efforts of these students in such jobs as messengers, guards of cor- ridors and locker rooms, gym helpers, file clerks, lunchroom helpers, assistants to the nurse and doctor, typists, and in special capacities as projectionists and library Work- ers, our school is more smoothly run. A student Who Wishes to join this club must meet certain requirements. He must be a term two or above with a satisfactory school record. Because study hall time is used, the student must be able to retain this record Without those study periods. Members develop a sense of responsibility, a desire to serve, and a sense of personal satisfaction in having contributed their time and energy to their teachers and fellow stu- dents. The services rendered by this club are highly appreciated by the faculty and stu- dent body. A special award is given to seniors who have served in this club for three terms or more. The Ensemble as it was first begun was an unor- ganized group and later developed into A Cappella Choir. This choir which was or- ganized in 1942 is the best known singing group at Soldan. Iunior Girls' Glee or Iunior Charninade Was organized in 1928. This is still one of the present-day singing groups. Boys' Glee, start- ed in the year l9ll, is the second oldest music group at Soldan. ln the very first year Senior Chaminade or Senior Girls' Glee Was begun. In addition to these four groups there is a string class for all pupils interested in violin, viola, cello, and bass violin. Most of the students in this class are members of the All City Orchestra. During the past three years a concentrated drive for funds to purchase new uniforms for the Senior Band has been in progress. With the aid of the Mothers' Club, a schoolspon- sored concert, sale of candy, and a variety of other projects, a sufficient sum of money was raised and the uniforms were purchased. The band played at the pageant celebrating the Golden Anniversary of Soldan's founding. This was the first official showing of the smart new uniforms, and they were much admired by all who saw them. ks 152' QV f 1' e 'S fi x :TT -12 ' 1 A i ' v 'vu Wg If b LT 5 ffl: T X 'Q 1 My l Ninety-nine ramafic gluifcl FIRST ROW: Smithmier, Scott, Beard, Quick, Long, Ogle, O'Dell, Frcxnklcm, Palmer. One Hundred 1 Dramatic Guild, one of the oldest organiza- tions at Soldan, meets on alternate Wednes- days, usually in room 214, under the spon- sorship of Miss Lucas. The club offers inter- ested students experience in acting and other phases of the theatre. The highlight of the year for the Guild is the annual production. Last fall the Guild, in commemoration of the Fiftieth Anniversary, presented The Taming of the Shrew by Wil- liam Shakespeare. A matinee performance was given November twentieth and an eve- ning performance November twenty-first. Miss Lucas and the cast received many compli- ments from those who attended. The play is the story of Katherine, the eldest daughter of old Baptista of Padua. She is known far and Wide as the most shrewish of women. This makes life miserable for her younger sister, Bianca, who could marry any one of three ardent suitors. But according to custom, she cannot Wed until Kate marries, and all men are wary of such a shrew. Then the gallant Petruchio comes to Padua and de- cides to Woo Katherine. He courts her roughly by lovingly and Wins her hand. Bianca is then secretly married and to the amazement of all Kate and Petruchio are wed, and we discover that he has tamed the shrew. The play was produced completely by the Guild and was directed by Miss Lucas. The sets. were made by members of the Guild, and a cyclorama curtain and a painted sea- scape were used as backdrops, thus produc- ing an unusual effect. It is composed ot students who render their services to help others gain the understanding they need to succeed in their studies. Miss Mary Wentker from Web- ster Oollege and Mr. Ray Einig from St. Louis University, who are student teachers, have also given their assistance this year. Mrs. Sidner, who is the club's sponsor, instructed a class in income tax computation. Several of the students who attended this class participated in the Income Tax Quiz sponsored by KETC, Channel Nine. One of these students placed fourth in the finals. pain lqfoducfion Radio production is one of the most unusual classes at Soldan. Under the direction ot Miss Gertrude Lucas, the students prepare scripts, study radio plays and techniques, and par- ticipate in simulated broadcasts. Aside from the educational value of this course, it develops poise and self-confidence in the participants. Usually the class presents a broadcast on KSLH. Sometimes they go on a field trip to Radio Park KXOK, Where they see the principles of radio in action. Membership in this class is limited. Any- one Who Wishes to take this course must have satisfactory grades in English, and should be a term tive or above.
