You are so important in what you may be and may do for human betterment and human progress that joy is ours in the hope that we may be helpful to you on your way to the accomplishment of the glory that may be yours. Meeting you in individual conferences, in various groups, in the school assemf blies, we are overwhelmed by the thought of your splendid potentialities for right' eousness, for achievement, for usefulness. How earnestly, at all times, do we hope that your eyes may be opened to see the beauty and loveliness of noble character and of worthy living, and to catch the vision of the great dignity of splendid achievement in workmanship and of high usefulness to society that your life may be! How deeply do we want you to open your minds and think on these matters and to decide so to live! May you in your very souls decree to go ever and irrevocably onward and upward to the utmost peaks of glorious being and doing and serving! For such greatness and glory, careful, prayerful attention must be given to our attitudes as to ourselves and as to all others. We all remember the great words of Stephen Vincent Benet in his expression PRAYER. That statement is so adequate that we may well have part of it again before us. ts Yet most of all grant us brotherhood, not only for this day but for all our years-a brotherhood not of words but of acts and deeds. We are all of us children of earth-grant us that simple knowledge. If our brothers are oppressed, then we are oppressed. If they hun' ger, we hunger. If their freedom is taken away, our freedom is not secure. Grant us a common faith that man shall know bread and peace, that he shall know justice and righteousness, freedom, and security, an equal chance to do his best, not only in our own lands, but throughout the world. And in the faith let us march toward the clean world our hands can make. Amen. To keep moving towards the goal of highest worthiness and greatest usefulness in our lives, we need to be ever watchful of ourselves, ever rigidly in control of our' TI-IE SCRIP MGH, NINE TI-IE SCRIP selves. It is so very easy to put the insignificant and crude and unworthy in the place of rightness in merryfmaking, so easy to put selfishness where welfare of others should be our concern, so easy to let laziness and indifference displace zeal and high endeavor, so easy to forget to put first things first, so easy to lose the great vision! How impor- tant it is, therefore, that we keep ourselves ever in line, ever faithful to our worthiest selves, ever earnestly at work on the highest purposes of which we are capable, ever true to the glorious vision of living nobly and serving greatly! It's a matter of minute' byfminute vigilance and of dayfbyfday high effort. Will you join me in liking very much the lines of Samuel Ellsworth Kiser's TODAY? This day is mine-my own! The sun Looks o'er the world's red rim at meg The countless days before this one All dawned that this great day could be: The aeons that have passed were all Required to bring this glorious day To let my moving shadow fall Across the level way. 9 tv. The past-the long, long tapering past- But ope'd the way and cleared the scene For this day that has dawned at last! This greatest of all days! Between The dawn and night shall I but sway In idleness, or heartily Do something well to mark this day That I have lived to see? In this spirit, let us seek to use every day to take us forward in our growth in dignity and significance. Our earnest wish for you all, Soldan Boys and Girls, is that you become the men and women of the highest quality of which you are capable, so that your happiness and the general welfare may be served. We are proud of you, and we know that you can, if you will attend to it, move on and on up the heights of splendor of which we speak! We pray that you will devote yourselves earnestly and constantly to these beautiful ends! Sincerely yours, H. P. STELLWAGEN The Soldan Patrons, Association OFFICERS . Mr. J. Harry Pohlman, President . Mr. Joseph Wall, First Vice President . Mr. A. J. Krohn, Second Vice President . Mr. J. B. Glover, Secretary Mr. William H. Benert, Corresponding Secretary . Mr. Frank Waldman, Treasurer. T HE SOLDAN HIGH ScHooL PATRONS' ASSOCIATION is composed of the fathers and mothers of the students, and those who are interested in the welfare of Soldan High. It was primarily formed to assist the students and to cooperate with the faculty of the school. Each year entertainments are given by the Patrons' Association, and the proceeds are donated to the various school activities, and at each graduation a donation is made by the Association to the Library Scholarship Fund. The Soldan High School Patrons' Association is a branch of the St. Louis Public School Patrons' Alliance, and was founded over forty years ago by thirteen civicf minded men for the purpose of being of service to the children and to the public schools of St. Louis. This organization has grown and developed until today it has seventyfthree branch associations, all working for a common cause. The Patrons' Alliance was instrumental in establishing a scholarship at Washington University for deserving high school students. THE SCRIP TEN H. C. ZEIS Assistant Principal Herbert P. With the advice and help of our sponsor, Mr. Gronemeyer, we have worked at many interesting projects. We have increased our knowledge in varied ields of art by visiting the Art Museum and the Artist's Guild. On these visits, we have seen out' standing art collections. We have also made trips to the Zoo to sketch interesting animals. This term the club has been divided into two teams. Points are awarded for contests, debates, and high attendance records. The losing team will treat the winning team to a picnic on Mr. Gronemeyer's farm. OFFICERS, FALL TERM . Monty Rubenstein, President . Ada Fletcher, Vice President . Theo Meyer, Secretary . THE SCPIP The Concert Band THE SOLDAN CONCERT BAND started out practically from scratch this year. Key men were missing in almost every section, and Mr. Sorrells was struggling through his Hrst term at Soldan. However, in spite of all these difficulties, Mr. Sorrells has huilt up a very fine Concert Band. Inaugurating a new system all his own, Mr. Sorrells has 1 heen taking one period a week, on Wednesdays, to teach Music Theory. This sadly ' needed course has heen lacking in Soldan's instrumental organizations for some time. This year the Concert Band gave its Hrst concert on May 10. THE JUNIOR GIRLS CHORUS is known as the Cadettes. It numbers in its membership girls of the lower terms and a few upper termers who, because of program difficulties, are unable to enroll in the senior vocal group. The Cadettes work hard and enthusif astically on voice placement, correct breathing, and diction. They strive for good posture and poise, and they realize very early how many things are involved in the training of a singer. Their ambitions may 11Ot be to be a singer, but they certainly are to be a member of Chaminade and of the A Cappella Choir. Small groups of the Cadettes have appeared on special programs. SIXTYfN1NE TI-IE SCRIP l-le lvrie, Fall Term HA IVRIA, the culture club under the guidance of Dr. Reiss, presents a varied as well as an unusual program to its many members here at Soldan. The club, organized in 1930, presents the literature, culture, and music of the Near East at its meetings in the form of a diversified program which includes discussion forums, debates, and guest speakers. As one of the most popular clubs at Soldan, Ha Ivria offers its members an opportunity to study further the life of the peoples of the Near East in quite a modern way. The members play a great part in a program which serves for learning and entertainment. This term, the activities of Ha Tvria and the Hebrew Department culminated in the presentation of the musical tableau, People of the Book, by David Reiss, which was held in conjunction with the observance of the Hebrew Book Month, a period which serves as a means of stimulating interest in Hebrew literature. The colorful poduction, staged in December, was directed by Ernest Hares, music director for the Board of Education, and Miss Gertrude A. Lucas, sponsor of the Soldan Dramatic Club. R. W. The purpose of the club is to study things pertaining to science, especially biology. The members take frequent hikes to learn the habits and names of the flowers and animals that grow wild. These hikes are not, however, lacking in fun and pleasure for everyone. Each term a picnic is given for students who have an HE grade in Biology 1. This spring, for the first time in a number of years, the club had a display of wild flowers for all the school to view. A trip was made to Eureka, where the flowers and mosses were gathf ered, brought back to the school, and put on exhibit by several of the members. Now that the war is over, Agassiz will again do many things that were suspended for the duration. The wild flower display is just the beginning. CFFICERS, FALL TERM . Jerry Tobias, President . NINETY TWO Tl-IE SCRIP The Projectionist Service Club 4AxUDIO'V1SUAL education is proving a most effective method of supplementing other educational methods, and the Board of Education has already made elaborate plans for such teaching. Since the Projectionist Service Club was started in 1941, Mr. Lyon has managed to maintain an effective service for the teachers, many of whom are taking advantage of the opportunity of showing movies or lantern slides to their classes. The club is composed of boys of all terms. After the training period is completed, boys become permanent members. The new members are taught to operate the prof jettors and slide lanters by the old members. After two or three lessons the new member is capable of taking an assignment under supervision. Four selected members are taught to operate the public address system in the auditorium. Whenever a teacher wants a film shown to his class, he notifies Mr. Lyon, who then assigns a room and a projectionist who has a study assignment at that period. Calls for Projectionst Service are increasing rapidly, not only with the school, but also from outside agencies who hold meetings in our auditorium, and the twenty or more trained operators are getting valuable experience. The club holds no regular meetings, and elects no oflicers. NINETY THREE The Junior Red Cross Committee, Fall Term SOON after the opening of school the committee members met to plan activities and programs. ONE-HUNDRED TWO TI-IE SCRIP The Football Team WHEN Head Coach Arnold von Lehsten and Assistant Coach Fred McEachron looked over the candidates for the 1945 football team, they found seven returning lettermen and some promising new prospects. Al Goldman, Mickey Grand, jack Motherway, and Eddie Smith had seen enough action to earn their letters. All seven lettermen took a position on the starting team. Coach von Lehsten converted backiield men Eddie Smith and ,lack Ivlotherway into a center and a tackle respectively. The other men returned to their former positions. Their Hrst game was the traditional battle with the East St. Louis Flyers. This time it was a real battle. The Bengals outplayed the Flyers, but lost a '7f6 heartbreaker. In their first league contest, however, the Tigers bounded back, edging out a 6fO vicf tory over Cleveland. The offense of the Bengals was weak, but, as in the Elyer game, the defensive play was excellent. It became evident that all of Soldan's games would be lowfscoring contests. Then the Bengals showed their real fighting colors as they upset a very strong Beaumont eleven, 13f6. The team played its best game, Smart, headsfup football was the keynote of the Tigers' success. This game definitely set forth Soldan as a strong contender for the Public League title. ONEfHUNDRED FOUR THE SCRIP After only three days' rest, the Tigers played McBride. The Colonnaders rolled over Soldan to the tune of 19f6. This was the first real defeat for Soldan. After only four more days' rest, the Bengals traveled to Paducah, Kentucky, where they were trimmed 38f7 by the strong, hardfcharging eleven of Tilghman High. How' ever, as no St. Louis team has defeated Tilghman in eleven tries, this was not a humiliating defeat. The football players always enjoy the trip to Paducah. A better rested Bengal eleven played and soundly trounced McKinley, 13fO, in their third league contest. Charles Dowdy, who played a remarkable game, began to earn recognition as one of the district's outstanding backs. The blocking and tackling of the entire team was brilliant. Then Came the big game with undefeated Roosevelt. This game, it was generally agreed, would decide the championship. The Tigers gave their all, but the Roosevelt aggregation was too big and fast. The Rough Riders triumphed, lSf6. Soldan returned to the win column the following week as they downed Central in a 12f7, fightftoftheffinish battle. In the last game of the season Southwest upset the Bengals, 14f7. This was the only bad spot on the Tigers' record. The team finished the season with four league victories and two league defeats. Soldan and Beaumont tied for second place in the Public High League. Charles Dowdy earned a position on the GlobefDemoc'rat second string AllfDistrict Team. He made the first AllfCity Team in all three major St. Louis newspapers. He scored 64 points during the season, the second highest total in his league. In addition to this offensive ability, Chas was probably the best defensive back in the Public High League. Gordon Wolff, Soldan's speedy end, gained a place on the second Allf District Team in the StarfTimes, Jack Motherway, the Tigers' big tackle, made the first AllfCity Team in the PostfDispatch. Eddie Smith, our star defensive center, Everett Kling, our accurate passing quarterback, Al Goldman, our hardfcharging tackle, and Len Petrofsky, our elusive fullback, all received honorable mention in the Globe. Those who received letters for the 1945 season are: George Acosta, Dave Alper, Bill Cherry, Gene Citerman, Charles Dowdy, Warreri Dygert, Bob Evans, Irving Feldf man, Al Goldman, Mickey Grand, Harrison Howe, Everett Kling, Norman Kozek, Martiii Millner, Harvey Mizes, Jack Nfotherway, Emmett Pyatt, Joe Rosengarten, Gerald Rudolph, Captain Edward Smith, Michael Theodore, Lawrence Winkler, and Gordon Wolff. Clarence Soule received a letter as manager. The Annual Gymnastic Meet, held usually the last Friday in March, is the climax of a year's work. As soon as one meet is past, the boys begin working on their optionals for the next meet. Although the required exercises are not shown to the boys until about three months prior to the meet, the fundamental moves are the same, and, having learned them, it but remains to put them together. A normal gym team has twelve members, four in the upper, or senior grade, and eight in the lower, or junior grade. However, a school may enter as many men as can satis' factorily do the exercises, and only the points earned by the first twelve count on the school total. These twelve make a letter. However, if the contestant has a high enough individual total fan average of 7.5 points on each exercisej, he may be awarded an S, an award usually depending upon the coach. Thus, the winners of the letters are not known for sure till after the meet. There are often many unexf pected results. This goes far to inspire an attitude of competition on the night ofthe 0NEfHUNDRED SIX Tl-IE SCIQIP meet, and to raise the overfall standard of the school. This year will mark a close combat between Soldan and its neighborfrival, Blewett. Blewett has never lost a meet. Soldan traditionally pulls in second. Koenig, who worked with it faithfully until his death in 1939. Since then Mr. Plag has been our sponsor and coach. The aim of the Gym Club is best put forth by its motto, A Sound Mind in a Sound Body, for it is just that: to give boys physical grace and confidence, and to give them courage and mental fortitude when faced with problems that, although of greater importance, may call for the same kind of perseverance and diligence. The Gym Club, unlike other high school athletics, demands a yearfround practice, and the new moves waiting to be learned present a continuous challenge to the gymnast. The members are put in squads which, for about twenty minutes at each practice, work under the supervision of an experienced boy, who demonstrates the fundamental moves and endeavors to teach them to the others. After having acquired a little skill, the member is put into a more advanced squad, and so on until in time he may become a squad leader himself. It does take time, however, as gymnastic skill comes slowly. Very seldom does one accomplish an aspiredfto feat without much hard work and ONEfHUNDRED EIGHT TI-IE SCRIP many hard falls. Accidents are kept to a minimum, however, by spotting a boy until he has acquired confidence in a stunt. There is one gym meet a year, usually late in March. Each boy has two exercises on the side horse, parallel bars, and horizontal bar: one is required, the other, an exercise devised by the boys, is optional. Blewett has consistently won the gym meets, and consequently has become the mecca for good gymnasts. Last year, as for the past three, Soldan came in second. Points are awarded each individual exercice on the standard of ten, and the school with the highest total wins. The contestants are divided into grades, upper and lower, and the points made in upper grades are multiplied by one and a half. The team consists of twelve men, eight in lower grade, and four in upper, with as many substitutes as necessary. These twelve are awarded letters, but a sub can beat out a team member by earning more points in the meet. In this case the sub would get the letter. Regular practice is on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, and every morning before school. CFFICERS . Gilbert Brinkmeyer, President . Charles Seacat, Vice President Donald W. The club not only provides an afternoon of fun a week for the girls, but also rewards them for their achievements. A girl earns points in G. A. A. and gym in many ways. Posture tests, perfect attendf ance, achievement tests, and tournaments are all a part of a plan for earning points. When Hve hundred points have been acquired, a girl receives a small S , a thousand points earns her a large HS. After she has earned her large S and passed her phyf sical examination, she may receive her Missouri M, providing she has a G average for the preceding year. Many tournaments are played in G. A. A. In the spring, basketball and softball provide the opportunity for winning a championship. The fall has volleyball, table tennis, badminton, and shuffle board. Our success as groups has been dismal, although several scintillators have performed with brilliancy against inferior competitors. The major part of the track season remains to be completed. We have yet to track and field in the Beaumont, Roosevelt, Southwest, Cleveland, District, State, and City interscholastic meets. It is therefore obvious that our keenest competitions are ahead of us in point of date. The following boys have already shown prominence in the junior division: Marvin Rosengarten facting captain, in the shotput and in the 44Ofyard dashg Gene Zafft in the 100-yard dash, the high jump, the 220-yard dash, and in the broad jumpg and Donald Feeler in the high jump. In the senior division a number of boys have per' formed to advantage: Jerry Canis in the 100fyard dash, 220fyard dash, and relay, William Gorder in the pole vault and high jumpg William Lampson in the shotput and 44Ofyard dash, and Charles Dowdy in the 100fyard dash, 220fyard dash, and the relay. The Tigers lost to Mehlville, 5553, in a thrilling overtime game, and to a strong McBride five, 5368. After losing a league game to Beaumont, 6563, the Bengals participated in the annual Normandy Tournament. The Gold and Brown won their first victory of the season over a favored Union, Missouri, squad. This was probably Soldan's best performance of the season. Two days later the host school crushed the Tigers, 6884. In another nonfleague contest U. City beat Soldan, 51146. During the remainder of the league season the Bengals nosed out Southwest, while they lost to Roosevelt, Blewett, Cleveland, Central, and McKinley. Soldan lost two nonfleague contests to St. Louis U. High, once, 4849, and in the suhfregional tournament, 5063. The Tigers' record for the season was two victories and twelve defeats. The following boys received letters: john Crosc, Irvin Feldman, Ben Rinehart, Charles Dowdy, Edward Smith, Wray Parnell, Bill Corder, and Gene Ackerman. ONE SIXTEEIN THE SCRIP The Cheer Leaders THE SOLDAN CHEER LEADERS have completed another successful season, although the lack of experienced men started the season off in a bad way. With only one veteran returning, Captain Lou Osheroff, you can readily understand the position of the squad. Hard work was thrust on the one returning veteran, who strove to hold the ideals and school spirit of past cheer leaders. He immediately went to work with what he had, and in the latter part of September the following boys were elected to the squad: Herman Leibovich, Saul Picker, Jerome Gross, Iviartin Caplan, Marvin Klaven. The boys again were in the limelight with their Touchdown Dance, which has become an annual affair of the school. The squad also brought to the school a new cheer called Tiger Yell, with an original set of motions. At the close of thc season the boys are already breaking in new men to increase the squad. Owing to the loss of their capain, Lou Osherofl, through graduation, the squad has elected Saul Picker to take his place. The squad, experienced now, will turn out a fine cheering section for our next year's teams. ONE SEVENTEEN -H12 Cross-Country -l-TGCIC -l-Qdm THE CROSSfCOUNTRY TRACK TEAM, under the guidance of Coach Smith, has comf pleted its first season. The first competitive event was a quadrangular meet held at Washington University. The team finished last, but the boys showed up well. james Toon iinished fifth, Captain Richard Malone, ninthg Charles Brooks, fifteenth, Eugene Ackerman, twentyfflrstg and David Wiseman, twentyfsecond. The future did not look very bright after this meet, but the boys practiced hard for the State Meet. Four' teen schools participated in the State Meet, and Soldan surprised everyone by taking third place. The boys came in as follows: Toon, second, Malone, tenth, Brooks, sixteenth, freshman Jay Moore, nineteenth, and Ackerman, fifth. Our two other men, Carl Pettet and David Wiseman, were not mentioned, because only the first live of each team counted. All members of the team received ribbons, and James Toon received a medal. Four of the boys ran in the Turkey Day Run at Walsh Stadium. This race was an individual race. James Toon took third place, Malone, eighth, Brooks, eleventh, Moore, twelfth. Recognition must be given to Ed Patzsch, who was ineligible to run, and to our hardfworking manager, Stan Wiseman. ONE'EIGI-ITEEN TI-IE SCRIP The Swimming Team THE SWIMMING TEAM, under the guidance of Mr. Gordon, staged a very successful comeback over last year. With only a few returning lettermen, the team went on to win four out of eight dual meets. Our victories over McKinley, Hadley, Central, and Cleveland were all very close, as neither one of them was won by more than four or five points. The outcomes of our losses to Beaumont, Blewett, Principia, and Roosevelt were all better than expected. The City Swimming Meet, at Washington University, showed the strength of Soldan's two star swimmers-Bill Pohlman and Irv Roselman. Pohlman captured the 5Ofyard free style and the 200fyard free style events, while Roselman took the diving event and the 100fyard backstroke. The freefstyle relay team, composed of Ed Bennett, John Motherway, Kenneth Mays, and Curtis Hack' worth, placed Hfth. However, Beaumont won the meet. Soldan and Blewett were tied for third. The State Swimming Meet saw Soldan in fourth place. Pohlman and Roselman again starred, each taking one first place and one second place. Pohlman's defeat- in the 5Ofyard free style was his first defeat in this race this year. Also, Roself man suffered his first defeat of the year in the 100fyard backstroke. Again the relay team placed nfth, At the completion of the season, the team held its annual meeting. Here, Bill Pohlman was elected as next year's captain. Also, Coach Gordon awarded letters to Bill Pohlman, Irv Roselman, john Motherway, Ed Bennett, Kenneth Mays, and Curtis Hackworth. ONE NINETEEN The Tennis Team STARTING out with only one letterman from the championship team of 1944, and with a mainly inexperienced team, Soldan's prospects seemed dim. From the fall tournament of 1945 the following members were selected: Warren Goodenough, Marvin Kauff man, Allan Glubok, singles, Irving Malnik and Jack Barenfeld, first doubles, Ronald Stein and Stanford Goldman, second doubles, jake Leptich and Melvin Feldman, substitute doubles. Soldan started out the season poorly by losing four out of five matches to Southwest, and three of five to a worthy Central squad. Against Blewett's splendid championf ship team, Soldan put up a courageous fight, but met defeat in all five matches. How' ever, the players then played some fine tennis in winning two matches from a strong Beaumont squad and all five matches from McKinley, Cleveland, and Roosevelt, Soldan finished the season in fourth place with a total of twenty wins, fifteen losses. Captain Kaufman and the other singles men were triumphant in three out of seven matches. Malnik and Barenfeld won five matches out of seven, and Stein and Goldman suffered only one defeat in six matches. The substitute doubles team won the only match they played. With four lettermen returning-Stein, Malnik, Leptich, and Feldman-and with some good new material, Soldaifs team, under the capable guidance of Coach Plag, can look forward to an excellent season next year. ONE-TWENTYfTWO Tl-IE SCHIP The Baseball Team THE 1946 BASEBALL TEAM, although handicapped by the traditional practicing diffif culties and the loss of several kcy men, looks like a smooth, hardffighting, and well' balanced ball team. The pitching department was weakened most by the loss of last year's star hurler, Harold Whitstiii. This season's pitching has fallen on Dave Lehr, one of last year's reserves. In the victory over Normandy, Dave showed his pitching skill by allowing only three hits. Cther likely prospects for mound duty this season are Tom Lang, john Motherway, Ben Rinehart, Robert Bay, and jim Mitchell, The infield, sparked by Captain Lester Harris and other veterans, including 'john Grose, Irv Feldman, and Harold Tenenbaum, shows great strength. The outfield is also in the able hands of two of last year's veterans, Bob Harting and John Catalano. A good indication of the team's ability was displayed in its two practicefgame victories: one over Normandy by a score of 3 to l, and the other a onefsided 17 to 8 victory over Harris Teachers' College. Although the team has also suffered two practicefgame defeats, it will surely finish the season near the top of the Public High School League. Other members of this season's squad who show great potential ability are Leonard Petrofsky, Charles Cvalati, Nathan Kirscher, Jack McLaughlin, James Mahew, Charles Dittmar, Earl Pettet, Richard Egan, Kenn Spence, Ered Lang, and Richard Bennett.
