THE SOLDAN HIKJH SCHOOL PATRONS' ASSOCIATION is composed of the fathers and mothers of the students, and those who are interested in the welfare of Soldan High. It was primarily formed to assist the students and to cofoperate with the faculty of the school. Each year entertainments are given by the Patrons' Association, and the proceeds are donated to the various school activities, and at each graduation a donation is made by the Association to the Library Scholarship Fund. The Soldan High School Patrons' Association is a branch of the St. Louis Public School Patrons' Alliance, and was founded over forty years ago by thirteen civic' minded men for the purpose of being of service to the children and to the public schools of St. Louis. This organization has grown and developed until today it has scventyfthree branch associations, ail working for a common cause. The Patrons' Alliance was instrumental in establishing a scholarship at Washingtcun University for deserving hgh school students. Mm, A Cappella Choir LAST fall, after a week of tryouts for new members, the A Cappella Choir, consisting of about seventyfhve boys and girls, under the leadership of Miss Mary Jane Badino, got under way. At the Teachers' Convention in November, which was, incidentally, its first public appearance, the group was well received. The choir, soon in full swing, appeared in a number of musical programs which took place during the fall semester. These included the concert presented by the various music organizations in Soldan and also several school assemblies. Besides these there were the lovely carols sung in the halls during the Christmas season, and the graduaf tion ceremony, in which the choir presented some new additions to its repertoire: The Streaming Rill, siM2lgHlfTCRf,,, and O Sing Your Songs. All the preceding activities were within Soldan, but during the Christmas season the A Cappella Choir, in a patriotic vein, cheered our men in uniform by singing at the Union Station U.S.O. center. With the closing of the old term and the beginning of the new, ,preparations for the forthcoming operetta, Katinka, were being made in the choir's customary quick and eilicient manner. With the success of Katinka comfortably put to rest, together Tl-IE SCRIP FIFTY FOUR FIFTYfFIVE Tl-IE SCRIP with other laurels previously won by A Cappella, the choir went on its merry way, again participating in its usual season's programs. When thinking of the many varied and colorful successes of A Cappella, we must remember that it is not only the fine quality of the voices but the spirit of good fellow' ship and cofoperation among the members that carries the choir to its high goal of achievement. These two hands make up the marching and concert hands. The third hand, or the junior Band, consists of heginners, who are taught how to play their respective instruments and the fundamentals of musician' ship. Our hand organization is very flexihle. It is made up of many ensemhles: concert hand, marching hand, pep hand, and two swing hands. The first swing hand, called the Soldan Solid Sendersf' has a separate picture devoted to its activities. A few of the events in which the hands have participated are as follows: Upen House, Annual Musical Festival, AllfCity Gym Meet, Navy Day Parade, and CleanfUp Parade. Part of our concert hand played a patriotic program for the Wediiesdziy Cluh of St. Louis, The Soldan Band, which is the marching hand champion of thc city and county, was honored hy heing asked to give a demonstration at the Beaumont' University City championship foothall game, played at the Wzilsh Stadium on Armisf tice Day. Each year thc hand loses many good musicians through graduation. However, Mr. Zopf always seems to have replacements, as well as additions, so that each year all three hands seem to vrow in numher. 5 Tl-IE SCHIP SIXTY TI-IE SCRIP Most of the extra rehearsals are held at eight in the morning. It requires a real ambition for improvement to cause sixty to eighty students to work at such an hour. Evidently Mr. Zopf seems to have transmitted his energetic and championship ideas to the hardfworking and ambitious Soldan musicians, because Soldan is the only high school in the city to boast of three bands and two swing bands. QKATINKA, THE PERFORMANCE of the operetta Katinka by the music organizations on the eve- nings of March 22 and 24 presented Rudolf Friml's melodies and Harbach's amusing book in full glory. Under the direction of Miss Mary Jane Badino and Mr. Arnold Zopf a show was produced which gave great satisfaction and enjoyment to all who were connected with it, whether they took part or merely comprised the audience. Each scene of the operetta seemed more delightful than the last. One of the very finest things about this particular show was the broad difference in mood and atmosf phere. It gaily skipped from the essence of country life with all its rollicking peasants to the gay, robust spirit of the Russian Hussars, and then to the little touches of Americanism which were so appropriately introduced. The languorous oriental atmos- phere caught the audience in a very responsive mood, to say the least, and the contrast of the exotic harem girls with their charming American sisters was very satisfying. The show seemed to be in perfect proportion with just the right amounts of love, humor, and misunderstanding brought into the tale. Each character seemed genuinely to be living the part he was portraying. Frieda Schor's singing of the role of lovely Katinka pleased the audience very much. Charles McGuire acted the part of Boris well, and his rival, Ivan, played by William Wightman, proved a spirited Hussar. Richard Whitmore delighted everyone with his unexcelled enactment of the wealthy, carefree American, Thaddeus T. Hopper. He handled the comedy part with finesse and perfect timing. Evelyn Schreiber was a lovely Helen Hopperg her outstanding delineation of the part was very professional, indeed. The beautiful harem queen Nashan, played by Wilma Kaplan, gave a very tranquil atmosphere to the scene, and Arif Bey, played by joseph Marenus, Abdul by Beryl Kohn, and Halif by Arthur Kruz added much to the play in the way of gaiety and humor. Lois Conrad and john Davidson as American photographers were distinctive additions to a very able cast. Frank Blood was not easily recognized as the corpulent Herr Knopf. Both he and Frances Benert, who played the part of Madame Voronoif, portrayed their foreign roles with good accent and humor. The sextette of girls, the part of Petrov as played by Dempsey Limbaugh, and Pierre as played by Fred Westermeyer contributed to the evening's entertainment. The choruses and dancing ensembles must be commended for their work, all of which was well received by the audience. It may be difficult to select the star of Katinka, but it can easily be said that this year's operetta provided an excellent medium for the talents of Soldan's music organizations and proved a colorful and entertaining show SIXTY THREE l l The American l-listory Club THE AMERICAN HISTORY CLUB endeavors to proceed more deeply into American history than is possible in the classroom. SIXTY FIVE The Chaminacle HAVE you heard those fluteflike thirds floating through the ventilators during period two? They emanate from Room 300, where the Senior Chaminade works diligently every day. Wheii the girls are good, they are very, very good, and this is one year when they are good. Both the fall and spring semesters have seen an enthusiastic group of some sixty girls working under the direction of Miss Badino to attain those qualities which have made for the Chaminade an enviable reputation. Individually, each girl feels it her duty to improve her breath control, enunciation, voice placement and tonal accuracy. Collectively, the Chaminade girls strive to achieve that beauty of tone quality and ensemble singing that has meant a very real pleasure to the singers themselves in spite of the hours of hard work. The Chaminade has participated in several of the school's programs, particularly the fall concert and the operetta. The girls translated two of their most effective songs into French and Spanish, respectively: The Nightingale and The River in Spring. Their selections this year have ranged from the playful Laughter Land by Marzo to the diiiicult Alleluia by Mozart. OFFICERS . Frieda Schor, President . Mary Ann Smith, Vice President . The original manuscript was used hy the orchestra. This was a feat very difficult for amateur musicians. To the memhers of the orchestra it was an invaluable experience. The orchestra also took part in the play of the year, Pygmalion, under the direction of Miss Lucas. The orchestra is now working on string numhers including Serenade in Four Move' ments hy Mozart and Marche Militairev hy Schubert. As a whole the orchestra is working on Liehes Freud and Rondino by Fritz Kreisler. Tl-IE SCHIP Tl-IE SCRIP OFFICERS . Bernard Yevelson, President . EIGHTYfNINE The golden Solid genders THE YEAR 1944 finds the Soldan Solid Senders soaring to greater heights under the sponsorship of Mr. Arnold Zopf. In the past year the Senders have participated in many shows and school dances. Among them were the Student Stumhlef' the Turf key Hop, the Tiger Drag, and the Valentines Day Dance. In the theatrical line they have played at the various band shows, at Open House, and at the Gym Meet which was held at Beaumont. The Senders have played several times for the soldiers during the last term and are very proud to do their small bit in the war effort. Quality, a word which means work, work, and more work, is closely observed by the Senders, who rehearse on their own time and endeavor to perfect their arrangements in order to give performances of high quality. Their arranger, Franklin Haspiel, has contributed many arrangements which have added immensely to the quality of the performances. Needless to say, hecause of their many rehearsals and ine arrange' ments, the Senders are rated as a very fine organization-an organization of which Soldan is justly proud. To top off everything, their vocalist and front man, Herman Romhom, known on the radio as Bill Bailey, does a very good job of vocalizing. The Senders will miss him greatly after the june graduation. Lost by the january graduation were Bill Buechner, a very good first trumpet man, Tl-IE SCRIP NINETY Tl-IE SCRIP and Harold Lazaroif, fine alto sax man. In the forthcoming year the organization will lose four outstanding soloists by the june graduation. The key men in the backfield were to be Mel Heller and Kenneth McClain at halfback positions and Gayle Hausmann at fullback, with Carol Wcirid at quarterback. The main cogs in the line were to be the returning regulars: Ralp Gauen at the pivot position, Bob Aulgur at guard, and Ed Eixler and lim Petty, tackles. However, the Tigers suffered a great loss when Mel Heller and Ralph Gauen were called into military service before the first game, and Jim Hubbard soon followed after being able to play in only three. That powerful backfield combination and vetf eran line was weakened greatly by these losses. Mr. von Lehsten, therefore, had to fill the vacancies with inexperienced boys under the draft age. The first and traditional game was with the East St. Louis Flyers at East St. Louis, The Tigers were able to cross the goal in the first quarter and seemed to be the better team, but the Flyers came back, led by their AllfState backfield ace, Bob Hinkle, and ended the game with a 20f7 victory. However, after comparing the scores, this was the toughest game for the Champion East St. Louis Elyers. With defeat still in mind, the Tigers met the McKinley Goldbugs. They had the ONEfHUNDRED determination to win and won the first league opener, 12fO. They then had two weeks before another league contest and therefore used this time to play a game with St. Louis U. High. This was one of the most thrilling games of the season. The Tigers were winning 12f6 until the last minute, when St. Louis U. completed a long pass and made the kick good to win the game. The Tigers then met the Beaumont Bluejackets at the Public School Stadium and didn't seem able to stop the Bluejackets' fast charging Russ Steager. This, however, was one of Beaumont's toughest games. Soldan lost, l8fO. Next in line were the Roosevelt Rough Riders. They had a powerful line and fine interference. They would get deep into the Tiger's territory and lose it on downs, only to receive it again from a kick by Gayle Hausmann. This was truly a defensive game for the Tigers. The final results were in Roosevelt's favor, 13f0. The ClevelandfSoldan game was entirely in favor of Cleveland until the remaining minutes of the game. A fresh bunch of Soldan substitutes were able to go over twice in the last five minutes, but failed to even up the score. The game ended with the Tigers ready to cross again and a score of 26f19. When the Tigers met the Redwings, there was no dispute as to who was the better team. Bob Aulgur, the Tigers' left guard, was the big gun, moving like a flash and breaking up the Redwings' attacks and causing them to fumble constantly. Soldan would recover and go over for a touchdown. The game ended with a 31-6 score in favor of Soldan. The last game for the Soldan eleven was a great upset for the Longhorns. The Tigers' hard-charging line and the excellent signal calling by Carol Wood were enough to give the Soldan team a fine record and end the season successfully. The final score was 19f7. At the end of the season the local newspapers gave honor to individuals who deserved it. Soldan was represented on every team by the captain, Bob Aulgur. He was chosen on the AllfDistrict and All'City teams of the Post, Globe, and Star news- papers. He was chosen at the left guard spot by the St. Louis Quarterbacks Club and missed being chosen the outstanding lineman by one vote. Others who received honor were Jim Petty and Ed Fixler. Jim was chosen on the AllfCity team of the Globe. Ed was the second string AllfDistrict and All-City choice of the Starf'Times. Those who received letters for the 1943 season are: Wilbert Adler, Robert Aulgur, Henri Caquelard, Eddy Fixler, Aaron Gorman, Gayle Hausmann, jim Hubbard, Beryl Kohn, Allen Kutner, Harold Lewis, Richard Lunan, joe Liberman, joe Marenus, Kenneth McClain, jim Petty, Dick Roemerman, Ben Viscuso, Martin Silk, Larry Winkler, and Carol Wood. Dave Alper and John Slater received certificates for being managers. ONE-HUNDRED-ONE TI-IE SCRIP v The BGSIQQLCGII -I-Zdm SOLDAN opened the basketball season by playing two nonfleague contests. In the initial game, Soldan won from a weak McBride Hve, and a week later lost to East St. Louis, 4360. During the Christmas Normandy Tournament, Soldan defeated St. James and McBride, and then lost to Bismarck in the last thirty seconds of the game, 3933. In the first league contest, Soldan defeated Roosevelt, 24flO, After defeating McKinf ley and losing to Beaumont, Southwest, and St. Louis U. High, Coach von Lehsten changed from a fast break to a slow breaking outfit. With the new break, Soldan defeated Central, 34f37, and a week later played Cleveland to a 23f23 tle until Cleve' land sank a basket in the last minute of play. This basket won the game, 2523. After that hardffought game, Soldan Came back without any trouble, defeating Blewett, 4lf30, and bringing the interscholastic season to an end. ln the subfregional tournament, the Gold and Brown seemed to awaken, winning from Berkeley and losing a very close game in the semihnals to Brentwood, to close the season. The following boys received letters: Captain Marvin Shatzman, Leland Goldstein, Wilbiir Adler, Jack Motherway, Bob Metz, Bob Portnoy, Eddie Fixler, Dick Lunan, and Ken Matsumoto. Tl-IE SCRIP Tl-IE SCRIP -I-IW? C:l'166I' Leaders THE SOLDAN CHEER LEADERS went through another successful season, leading large crowds at the football and basketball games. At the beginning of the fall term only Captain Sam Weintraub, Hermie Rombom, and Phil Eisen were left from last year's squad. These boys immediately went to work making new cheers and reviving old favorites, A new cheer called Tiger's Claw was made, and the old cheer Boomf alackau was set to one of the most original set of motions ever seen in any school. In October, elections for new cheer leaders were held to increase the squad to six. The turnout of boys was the largest in many years. The school then met in the audi' torium, and the new boys performed for the school. Those elected were Sheppard Ellis, Morris Fox, and Marvin Bierman. After solving the manpower shortage for the fall term, the squad ran into the same difhculty again in january, when it lost two of the three standbys from the 1943 team. They were Captain Sam Weintraub, lost through graduation, and Phil Eisen, transferred to another school. The boys elected Hermie Rombom as captain for the spring term. The team is young, but with continued practice will develop into another outstanding squad. ONE HUNDREDfTHREE ,ff hff'Ml' wi ily gf 1 ' fLe,ZLeA, The G. A. A. This has been the motto of the Gym Club from the time it was organized by Dr. Otto M. Koenig in 1918 up to the present term. Since its organization, the enrollment of the club has steadily increased, the enrollment now being upwards of eighty, the largest the club has ever known. Several weeks after the term began, organized practice on the apparatus was held on Wednesday's and Fridays, and since many boys worked on these days, a daily practice from eight to eightffortyfiive in the morning was inaugurated. Though the process of building a good gymnast is a very slow one, several new members proved themselves to be good team material in a very short time. The club was in the spotlight three times here at school during the year. The first occasion was late in the fall term, when those skilled in tumbling gave an exhibition on the stage during an assembly. The Mothers' Club enjoyed the second performance by the club, and prospective team members showed their stuff on thc stage to provide part of the entertainment for Open House spectators. These exhibitions enable the boys of the school to get a better conception of what goes on in the club: consequently there is a broader knowledge of and a keener interest in apparatus work. ONE HUNDREDfSEVEN Q fi. ,a ,L The Gym Team THE SCRIP EVER since gymnastics was made an interscholastic sport, Soldan has always made a good showing and had a good team to represent the school. The training that the hoys undergo is very strenuous and requires much patience and enthusiasm. In order to he a good gymnast and performer, a hoy must have a fairly well developed hodv. and he must have cofordination, which makes constant practice necessary. The gymnastic meets are held once a year, and are run off on a competitive hasis. Some lwoys are more advanced gymnasts than others, and consequently they are put in a more advanced class or grade. This makes an upper grade and a lower grade, in which the hoys are put according to their ahility. To he eligihle for the meet, a hoy must he ahle to perform satisfactorily the three given exercises, and must then per' form three exercises of his own composition. Last year Soldan was a very much underrated team, yet we managed to secure third place, Blevvett taking first, and Central second. This year Soldan has one of the finest teams it has ever produced, a situation which is due largely to the ever increasing popularity of the sport. Nineteen hoys were entered in this year's meet, the largest ONEfHUNDREDfEIGHT number Soldan has ever entered. The first eight men in the lower grade will receive letters. Soldan took second place this year, just losing to Blewett by a very small number of points. The tension was very great when the announcements were being made, for many who saw the meet expected Soldan to win lirst place. Two of Soldan's boys gained top honors in the lower grade. First in the city was Don Rocca, and second was Jack Purtle. All the boys did well this year, and next year Coach Plag will have fine material out of which he can build a championship team. Each term two parties are given. One of them is for freshman girls, the other for the boys who receive letters for par' ticipation in interscholastic sports. The freshman party is given for the girls who are new at Soldan. Each semester the clulw invites them and their advisers to the frolic, Games are played and refreshments are served. All in all, it acts as a get acquainted party. The party for the lettermen is the main event of the season. Gifts are exchanged, refreshments are served in the lunchroom, and the coaches award letters to the lwoys of the various teams. The girls try to show the hoys a good time and to inspire them in their athletic amhitions. For the past three terms a membership contest has been held. The junior Division, with Charles Dowdy as captain, is not well balanced but does have several good performers in the group. Besides last year's lettermen4Charles Dowdy, Gordon Wolff, Gerald Rudolph, and Eugene Citerman-the following boys are helping to strengthen the juniors: Harrison Howe, Marvin Walts, Harold Weiss, Norman Kozek, Louis Sorkin, Joseph Rosengarten, Bernard Fitterman, Marvin Kauff man, Marcus Theodore, Eugene Rotenberg, David Friedman, Martin Millner, William Gorder, William Lampson, Don Friedman, and others who also claim to be out for track but who are ineligible to compete. We deeply appreciate the splendid help we are receiving from our men teachers, both in advice and active aid at the meets. David Simon and joe Oppenheimer, the stu' dent managers, and Jerome Feldman, the midget student director, deserve great credit for their untiring efforts in helping the teams to greater success. The Swimming Team CONSIDERINU the loss of many keymen this year, the Swimming Team did well. Coach Gordon, at the beginning of the season, had only a few returning men, who acted as a nucleus. Many hoys turned up to try out for the team, hut only a few had the necessary skill. In order to make a letter, a boy must swim several miles in practice, make the required numher of points in the meets, or place in the city or state meets. In the meets the team which gains the greatest numher of points wins out. These seasonal competitions are really only conditioners for the city and state meets, held at the end of the season. The team, made up of many new men, did a grand joh and will really go places next year. The hoys who represented Soldan this year are: Captain Bill Scott, free styleg Assist' ant Captain Julian Orenstein, hack strokeg james McGinnis, Bill Pohlman, and John Slater, freefstyleg Henry Kraus, Jurgen Scharsch, and George Stern, hreast stroke, Eugene Portman, hack stroke, Harold Lainoif, Irvin Roselman, free style diver: james Richter, manager. Tl-IE SCRIP Tl-IE SCHIP The Tennis Team START1Nc: out with only one returning letterman, Soldan's prospects of maintaining its usual standard seemed remote. From the spring and fall tournaments the mem' hers of the team were selected, The memhers chosen were Sidney Siegfried, Irvin Lavin, and Gerald Newport, singles men: Clark Craft and Stanley Glantz, douhles team. The team worked diligently under the direction of Mr. Plag on the jefferson Memorial Courts, where the puhlic school matches are held. In the first match Sol' dan's netsters showed their green hut game caliher when they lost all four matches to a worthy Southwest championship team. The next day they met a fine Roosevelt team, and staging an upward hattle, they defeated Roosevelt three matches to one. Using all their skill, the hoys gave the hest that they could for their school, ending in a tie for third with Beaumont, The final standing does not look very well on paper, hut the team fought hard for that position. The hright spot is the prospect of next year's team with four returning lettermen. Also, there is some good new material from which to select the team and give Soldan a line chalice for next year's championship. ONE FIFTEEN The Golf Team Tl-1E SCRIP THE GOLF TEAM, under the able sponsorship of Dr. Reiss, has done well in the past few years. THE SCRIP Tl-IE SCRIP Lyyrf- we -1 I-Y ,wK6r'6 The Baseball Team THE SOLDAN BASEBALL TEAM, coached by Mr. Gordon, began its 1944 season with fervent hopes of better results than in previous years. With the entire inneld com' posed of returning lettermen-Captain Ridinger at third, Harris at short, Levin at second, and Schatzman at first-Coach Gordon had little to worry about from these positions. However, the outlook for the battery situation was quite different. Since both of last year's catchers have been inducted into the armed services, many prospects have been tried out and constantly drilled for this key position on the team. The pitch' ing staff presented another great problem to the Tiger mentor, but in spite of the lack of effective southpaw hurlers, a fairly dependable staff of rightfhanders has been developed. The team has practiced under a tremendous handicap, since there is no available ground near Soldan on which to play. However, the determined players have maintained a constant daily practice in Forest Park, weather permitting. Whatever their final percentage may be, the members of the Soldan Baseball Squad, without a doubt, deserve the gratitude of the entire school for their relentless efforts to improve and to bring glory to Soldan's name.
