It was primarily formed to assist the students and to cofoperate with the faculty of the school. .Each year entertainments are given by the Patrons' Association, and the proceeds are donated to various school activities, and at each graduation a donation is made by theifAssociation to the- Liberty Scholarship Fund. The Soldan High School Patrons' Association is a branch of the St. Louis Public School Patrons' Alliance, and was founded fortygyears ago by thirteen civicfminded men for the purpose of being of service to the children and the public schools of St. Louis. This organization has grown and developed until today it has 7 3 branch associations all working for a common cause. The Patrons' Alliance was instrumental in establishing a scholarship at Washington University for deserving high school students, and George C. Helme, ,a graduate of Soldan High, is now benehciary of this scholarship. r 1 .K Ax i ai , if : if , 5, v V 1 s L, x- :rx ,ig-Vg? 1 1745 .I ' it .ig f .F up V-..' ,ff ,'.,, 1, ' 'Et r V i , , if 'f 11 f, 'ix W.. gr? is 1 ' . QMLL 1 ln Memoriam FRANK O. KRUH had a gracious and quiet manner, a genial humor, and a kindly spirit that endeared him to all. He loved his home. He prized the friendship of his comrades, to whom he was ever loyal. He valued life with a high seriousness, laboring earnestly, persist' ently, unselnshly, with a passion for perfection in his own work. Freely he gave of his time and energy, teaching with gentle patience and judging with fairness. With fortitude he faced life's trials. For the inspiraf tion of his calm and noble living and for his courage to carry on, we cherish his memory. THE SCRIP In Memory of Effie C. Ramsey r SHE is not dead who lays a gentle touch to memory's responsive chords. Eflie C. Ramsey influenced the life of every one who entered Soldan High School, whether as one of the large student body, or of the teaching staff, or of the corps of caretakers throughout the building. She knew each one, and knowing, gave to some the prized word of praiseg to some her friendly admomtiong to some judicious censure. Where she perceived need, she gen' erously gave material aid. For these things her memory is blessed today, blessed by students in the school, blessed by graduates who have gone forth. The memory of her friendship is precious to us all. She looked on each with level eye and clear discerning, ready always with sympathy for any mood. She knew so well the tonic benefit of merry jest as fillip to tired spirit. She knew as well the deep meaning of quiet conf verse to solve perplexities, for Eflie' Ramsey was an understanding friend. p ' She is not dead, for it is deathless life to be estabf lished in living hearts that must ever quicken in love, endeavor, and loyalty when they remember her. gg. f .W if . The opening of the doors of Public School No. 1 South on April 2, 1838, was a most significant event, providing for the first time in St. Louis school opportunity open to all children, school opportunity for the first time in St. Louis as the concern of the community, a strong emphasis on the importance of education and on the obligation of the com' munity to provide in schools for its service to its children and, through them, service to the whole community and far beyond. That event pointed straight ahead to today and to the opportunities today offers in the St. Louis Public Schools to all St. Louis young folks who, through their parents, have the vision and the will to apply them' selves in use of the opportunities presented. The community has still the determinaf tion thus to make good in its obligation both to serve youth and, through them, to provide for the general welfare. Through a full century of problems, of difficulties, of dangers, of change, the development of public education has gone steadily forward with provision for addi- tional opportunities one after another until the splendid privileges enjoyed today in the public schools by St. Louis have resulted. Some of the important additions are: music, night schools, high schools, art, libraries, kindergartens, physical education, laboratories for science instruction, industrial arts, home economics, organized athletics, clubs, the hygiene department, openfair schools, sight conservation classes, vocational schools, schools for cripples, other special schools, correction of speech defects. These and many other additions to the original offerings in the public schools are ours today because wise educators and other citizens through the years have found these additions important and have insisted that they be provided for youth. How very much we have for which to be deeply grateful! How many devoted men and women have thought and planned and worked to make the glorious present possible for the splendid boys and girls of the St. Louis of today! How appropriate for each of us would be the feeling and the words of Einstein! A hundred tunes a day I remind myself that my mner and outer life depend on the labors of other men living and dead and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am receiving The amazingly beautiful pageant showing the history of American music and revealing the achievements of St Louis high school students in the field of music is most appropriate recognition of the growth of public school education through a hundred years It reveals too something of what is being done at this time and it gives us lugh hope of continuing development in the great field of school music The opening of the doors of Public School No 1 South one hundred years ago was an event pointing also to the many many years beyond today What will be the history of the next hundred years of public education in St Louis and th next hundred and the next? Will that too be glorious in growth and development in worthiness of its giving to youth and to the general good of the community? This will be the result if the community continues in its zeal for provision of the best opportunities possible for its children if the children themselves constantly use their educational opportunities fully and if each generation holds high to its children the THIRTEEN , A is 4 sn F l a ,. wo 1 is si 'Q-. ., , .,, 24 'E' . . vi,- s - Y 5- 9 ' ' . .- 1 , , . 2' . . . . . . SIXTY-ONE -I-be -lorchbearers, Spring -lerm Tl-IE SCRIP Mlm Y .ni The Cdm6fd THE Feature Section of the Scrip owes its photographs to the efforts of the .Camera Club. In addition the club arranges corridor exhibits near the end of each term, and this year also prepared special exhibits for Open House and for the Mother's Club Hobby Show. The Camera Club aims to increase its members' knowledge of photography by dis' cussions and demonstrations. A high spot of this year was an illustrated .lecture by Mr. C. S. Webb, of Beaumont, on his trip to Alaska. As the members progress they may pass tests and be rated as snapshotter, apprentice, journeyman, and mase ter. The following are ranking members: apprentice, Charles Lewald and Dorothy Rossen, journeyman, Taylor Meloan and Ronald Wyldej master, Mac Russell. Soldan defeated Beaumont in a contest held in January. Mac Russell won first place in the portrait division with his picture 'LTed, and tied for second place with Bill jackson. Taylor Meloan won first place in the still life division with his picture My House, and third place with Gone to Bed. CEFICERS, FALL TERM . Mac Russell, President . Charles Lewald, Vice President . It is an organization of girls who are interested in voice culture as well as in the appreciation of finer music. During the past year the club has sung on various occasions: in our own auditorium, at the first auditorium session of the new Southwest High School, on Class Day, on Graduation Day, over Radio Station KWK for the St. Louis Christmas Carol Association, for the Mothers' Club in the pageant Musica Americanaf and also at jefferson City in a concert sponsored by the Missouri Federation of Music Clubs. Some of the selections which the club has learned are: 'kWho Is Sylviaf by Schubert, i'Gypsy Life, by Kieserlingg Galway Piper, arranged by Fletcherg and several mixed chorus numbers, including Gloria in Excelsiisf' by Mozart, Abraham Lin- coln, by Damrosch, and Say Thou Lovest Me, by Noble Cain. Besides the many honors and courtesies which have come to the club, we have been pecially proud of the honors accorded to our soloists, Adrienne Cohen, Mariquita 3 Moll, Margaret Stringfellow, Martha Grayson, Karlyn Cohnberg, and others. ak We club is justly proud of its success at the Washington University Festival in 3 M April. The Chaminade and Glee Club sang a glorious chorus, and several of the -l-he Cbaminade SEVENT YN H 1 if'y'W'W W ' scrap 13 J Mm i ' l K ' i l girls appeared as soloists. Yet we all realize that these honors would not have come to the club had it not been for the untiring efforts of our director, Miss Finn. Q I a OFFICERS, FALL TERM . Yes, the Choral Club is going through the vocalization necessary for enunciation, pronunciation, and breath control, under the able direction of Miss Finn, sponsor of the club. Recently many members were given the opportunity of hearing the wonderful prof grams given at the Music Educators' National Conference here in St. Louis. The club purchased a number of tickets, and about forty members enjoyed the unusual experience of hearing fine music, orchestras, bands, and choruses selected from the entire United States, Uur chorus recently sang for the Mothers' Club, and also caroled at Christmas time. We are now working on some fine operatic selections from the compositions of Bizet and Verdi. CFFICERS, FALL TERM . Randles Watkiiis, President . James Mahadey, Vice President . THE scalp X i ' ' A xv, l THE SOLDAN ORCHESTRA was organized in 1912, and has been under the direction of Miss Finn since that date. This year the orchestra has been increased to sixty members and has been reviewing marches, light operas, and symphonies, as well as studying some of the newer classics that make up its repertoire. The orchestra has made twelve public appearances for various events taking place in and outside of school. A select group of St. Louis boys and girls were chosen to take part in the Music Educators' National Convention given at the Auditorium in March. Twentyffour boys and girls were selected from the Soldan orchestra and band for the ninety piece AllfCity Orchestra. Two girls from Harris Teachers College, former Soldanites, also were chosen. Our own concertmeister, Morris Krachmalnick, was chosen concertmeister of the AllfCity Orchestra and had the great honor of winning the concertmeister's position in the National Orchestra.
