Was sleeping dully in the darkg lg And as the light of early morn Came thru the slit, the prisoner sighed. The light grew strong, he stirred and moved. The chains fell offg he leaped and cried. The door sprang wide, he rushed outside The world to him was freshly whole. The light was knowledge joined with will To bring him freedom for his soul. J. E. Bachelder, jr., 8. Meditations of the Great Stone Face ff-'Aw HEAD of Stone, How many nights have hid your face 'UQ From sight, to let the dawn confront Your fixed gaze of sleepless eyes f Turned ever toward some future age? What outcome do you see of years To come with unknown destinies, Or is it down the years gone by You watch with penetrating gaze? O Face, how many centuries Have dropped into the gulf of Time Like leaves of your adjoining trees? The Sphinx is young compared to you! Grim model of the coming race, Did not your stern lips condescend To smile, when pigmies first you saw, Men fashioned in your own true form? What mystic sagas could you tell- The secrets of the Universe! Your lips are sealed. Nestor Du Vall. 106

Y 2 q e ra 1 15 ' t ' 5 'T But when it s Chaucer you re to read It makes a difference, yes indeed! Now first we hear about the knight And how so bravely he did fight. Then comes the squire with hair of gold, Who danced and wrote and sang, we're A knight's yoeman there was also In a green coat and hood he'd go. Then comes our dainty Eglentine With ways and manners very line. Likewise we find the manly monk Who thought that study was the bunk He loved to hunt with horses line And in that sport he spent much time. Now if we are still at our work, We'1l hear about the Oxford clerk Who on his horse, thin as a rake, Many books for his trip did take. A Merchant, Sergeant, and Shipman, Country Gentleman, and Plowman, Also a Doctor, and a Friar, A Carpenter, Reve, and Dyer. All traveled without a charter To seek the holy, blissful martyr. Since I've named these it's only fair To mention the rest who are there. A Weaver, Cook, and Pardoner, Good Wife of Bathe, and Summoner, Gentil Maunciple, and Miller, A Parson, and Hat seller. And last, but not least, we End The brilliant Host who was so kind As to offer to be the guide And travel along at their side. So with this jolly company They started out on their journey From England to Canterbury Feeling quite happy and merry. told. Jeannette Lewald, 8 107
