W Q42 5:S'cf'tQ'ESG522l j,5gg The N1ghtshade my HE much heralded Agrlcultural Pxcmc at the State Ex fir., ,sf perlmental Farm was over and the road leadlng to town trucks farm wagons pony carts buggles every varlety of the carrxaoe maker s art was represented There were also a number of blcycles and a few pedestrlans Amono these last were two boys whose pecuhar appearance and self consc1ous manner attracted universal attentlon They were appar ently faflllllal' fivures as they were halled by the majorlty of those who passed them Oenerally wlth some teaslno comment that brought out a sullenly defiant reply They were about foulteen years old and were as much allke as two peas They had the unusual combmatxon of p1erc1ng dark brown eyes and tow whxte curly ha1r and from th1s last had come the nlckname Snowball whxch they shared lmpartxally Tne sons of an lrnprovldent cxtlzen named Turner they had been named Tom and Todd but the uncertamty of the xdentxty of the one addressed had Oamed for them both the quest1on1nO appellatlon of Torn or Todd Generally slurred 1nto Tommertod to whlch elther answered They were town char acters the butt of Jokes and pranks and roamed about unkempt and uncared for return1nO to thelr d1lap1dated home only to sleep and to eat when odd Jobs falled to prov1de meals elsewhere The1r parents were utterly lndlfferent to the1r com1nO and go1n0 perhaps among thexr brood of a dozen or more chlldren they were hardly rmssed When the state had establlshed an experxmental farm only four mrles out of town thelr cur1os1ty had led them to VlS1t lt and the super lntendent contrary to all thelr prevlous experlence had answered courteously and wlth Oreat patlence thexr lnnumerable questlons By degrees thelr lnterest became aroused and the5 begged to be allowed to work around the farm They became excellent hands g1v1ng to vege tables and flowers a lovmg care that plants seem to repay w1th more than ordlnary exuberance They gradually came to spend most of thelr t1me at the farm Today as they trudoed the long mlles back to town thexr thoughts were mmgled sweet and b1tter for Mr Slade, the superlntendent had gxven them full credlt for thelr achlevements to the vxsltors whom he showed about the farm and had even pralsed their work But always had come the amused, lncredulous, What, not the Snowballsl They were nearmg home, when thelr thoughts were jerked back to earth by the laughmg shouts of boylsh VOICCS, and a trap drawn by a palr of dxmxnutlve ponles dashed past them A small dog whlch was 0 4. 1: 35 -1 Eff- -A.
