For a long time we wondered what or whom we should dedicate this second Reflector to. At length we came to the conclusion that the most fitting subjects were the seniors. We congratulate them upon the successful comple- tion of their tour years in high school, the four years which appeared so long when they first entered the school yet now, looking back. seem so short. This year's seniors have been more fortunate perhaps than last year's in that they have had at least a year and a half for the former Soldanians and Blewettites to amalga- mate into a united body. Still. they are to be commended for the fine way in which they have joined together in the new school. Some of these seniors will go on to college: others into the business world. But. whichever they choose, we wish them the best of luck. GRADUATION Seven .911 emoriam HERBERT P. STELLWAGEN Herbert P. Stellwagen, public servant, educator. and humanitarian, began his career in St. Louis in 1904, as a math teacher at Yeatman High School. In 1917. he became principal of Roe Elementary School. and in September. 1929, he became principal of Soldan High School in which capacity he served until his retirement in Iune, 1946. Mr. Stellwagen's great ability in administration was soon recognized here in St. Louis. account- ing for his fast rise in the educational system. Tirelessly, diligently. Mr. Stellwagen often worked eighteen hours a day serving his com- munity and school. He became one of our most active citizens. participating and serving in many civic under- takings. His success in life as an educator can be summed up by these words--professional skill, exceptional scholarship and experience in all phases of teaching. In his many years at Soldan. Mr. Stellwagen awakened fine ambition in countless young people through his vigorous, magnetic personality. We are grateful for and cherish the memory of one of St. Louis' outstanding educators. who had a sincere, unwavering belief in young people. Eight n emoriam JAMES F. COOK Iames F. Cook, star athlete irom the University oi Illinois, came as a manual arts instructor to Soldan High School in 1913. For the next thirty- six years he generously served the Soldan students with his time and eiiort, becoming an integral part of our school. Mr. Cook taught with remarkably gentle patience and judged with fairness. In 1916 he took charge ot the football team. and under his proficient leader- ship the team won five championships in the next fourteen years. Through his coaching success Mr. Cook gained recognition as an outstanding high school coach here in St. Louis. In 1930 he retired as a coach but continued his teaching and leading of young people. Mr. Cook's thirty'six years at Soldan were well spent judging from the influence that continues to be felt by those who knew him. Mr. Cook is remembered with respect tor his teaching capabilities and with love for a sympathetic friend. Nino .Aclminififrafion BEN H. BARR Principal Mr. Barr, a kind, friendly. and undersianding person. is our principal. When any problem arises, he is always ready with a helping hand. Under his guidance our high school years are made more enjoyable. We take this oppor- tunity to show our appreciation for all that Mr. Barr has done during our years at Soldan- Blewett. Ten E. E. CHILES Assistant Principal Every freshman student is well ac- quainted with the pleasing person- ality of Mr. Chiles. ln retum for his splendid efforts, he has earned the gratitude and appreciation oi the entire student body. Once we achieved this eminent peak, we plunged into the stream of iast-moving events. During these happy days. we could look back on the preceding terms with eyes more prone to noticing their brighter side. Although the union oi Soldan and Blewett inter- rupted the smooth stream oi our high school days, we are now. through everyone's efforts. a strong united group. In our records on the following pages. we are trying to give the readers of our yearbook some insight into the activities and accomplishments ol the Classes oi Ianuary. Iune. and August. 1950. These social activities centered about the clubs. where we met with other students who shared a par- ticular interest or hobby. We were all given the opportunity ot pursuing our favorite subject farther than the classroom took us. or to take part in some sort of recreational activity. We made many friends through our clubs and en- joyed many happy hours together. These we shall never forget. Fllty-alqhl 3 IQ ToP p iclure Sealed: Adams, Zeffren. Shexberg. McCormick. Rennard. Mx. Miss The Reflector staff has worked diligently this past year in an effort to bring to you, the students oi Soldan-Blewett High, an annual which will record many of the events of your school life of the year 1949-1950. A yearbook. such as the Reflector. can at best give only a sketch of the numerous activities which take place in a school as large as ours. Neverthe- less. we have tried to make this' sketch cover as much territory as possible without making the book overly large and expensive. We feel certain that the Reflector will bear out its name by reflecting to you a picture of the life of your school. In addition we trust that the photo- graphs and articles which we present in this publication will recall to the readers now and in years to come many pleasant thoughts of their years in Soldari-Blewett. The staff is composed of a group of fifteen to twenty students, mostly seniors. It is aided greatly by Mr. Foreman, the faculty sponsor. and Miss Brown, the faculty business manager. Since no one wants to make a mistake, the seventy members of the A Cappella Choir are all in their places at eight A. M. each morn- ing. This club is the most advanced of all choral groups here at Soldan-Blewett. Under the leadership of Miss Thym, the students enjoy each moment put in studying classical, semi- classical, and sacred music. By participating in numerous outside activi- ties many students have received worth while musical experience. The busiest time ot the year, Christmas, is the one everyone enjoys most. Besides caroling through our halls, they appear at Hotel Statler, Union Station, and the Merchants' Exchange. Many times the Choir has been called upon on short notice, but they have always performed quite well. Miss Thym has good reason to be proud of this group. The Vocal Ensemble consists ot about sev- enty-eight students, both boys and girls who meet every day in Room 300, under the direc- tion of Miss Thym. This year the group, which includes students of all terms, will help cele- brate Vocal Ensemble's third birthday. They sing music written in unison as well as four part arrangements. Some of the songs used by the Vocal Ensemble are The Bells of Saint Mary's, Prelude, Stout Hearted Men, Pretense, When Day is Done, and many more. They all enjoy their music period each day. and invite all who enjoy singing READING MUSIC? to join them next term. OFFICERS President ....... .......... ..... The music family includes three Senior groups-Choir, Senior Chaminade. and Boys' Glee Club: two Iunior groups-Iunior Chaminade, and Vocal En- semble: and a Freshman group, Iunior Chorus. Senior Chaminade is often referred to as a stepping stone to Choir. The girls' activities this term consisted of radio programs, and an appearance before the Soldan-Blewett Mothers' Club. As there has been so much talent in the group this term, they have held several talent shows. Not only does everyone enjoy them, but they have helped some of the bashiul girls to gain confidence in appearing before an audience. Among the wide variety of music, the girls sing both classical and popular music, under the guidance of Miss Adele Thym. unior CLamina e Junior Chaminade, one of Soldan-B1ewett's active music groups, consists of seventy-eight girls, under the leadership of Miss Adele Thym. Meeting daily. the girls work hard to improve themselves in such things as breathing and diction. Realizing that enjoyment and relaxation are necessary for the fullest appreciation of school life. the Boys Glee Club attempts to fulfill these requirements. Many boys who join know little about music, but after several terms they become top singers in this fine group. The boys agree that they acquire a finer sense oi music appreciation through their study of music. During the term the Boys Glee Club participates in many public appearances such as the annual Music Concert, the Inter-Group Confer- ence. the annual operetta. and programs before the Soldan-Blewett Mothers' Club. Soldan-Blewett started the season's play at University City. where they were handed a 20-6 defeat on September 20th by a strong, highly-rated eleven. The Tigers bolstered a good passing offense, but it looked rather weak be- side University City's strong ground attack. Ninety-tour joofdaff Things did not get any brighter, how- ever, when the Tiger eleven were handed their second straight defeat by East St. Louis in a close game, 13-S. Our boys fought hard and took heart when they grabbed a seven-point lead in the second quarter. thanks to a brilliant thirty-five yard run by Angelo Lom- bardo. But the Flyers quickly retaliated, scoring on a fumble, and finally forging ahead in the third quarter. BATTLEGROUND HlKEl TWO DOWN. MORE TO GO As the hyphenated-eleven entered league play for the 1949 season with two defeats against them. they were determined to win. and Coach Hatfield especially enjoyed seeing them trounce the Southwest Longhorns 25-12. The game was highlighted with brilliant playing on the Tigers part during the whole encounter. as they com- pletely outclassed the Southwest eleven. Ronald Suchart gave evidence oi this as he raced eighty yards for a touchdown in the opening minutes ot the game. Strengthened by their last victory. the team then proceeded to smother the McKinley eleven on a rain-soaked attemoon in rnid-October. The score was I9-0. Ninety-sight The Soldan-Blewett Baseball Team was a dark Y W - f horse in this year's Public League race. With A1 Towbin returning to do the main pitching chores. the team figured to roll if its hitting could match the effectiveness of its pitching. However. Towbin started slowly, but improved greatly as the season progressed. The Tigers lost to McBride in their first en- counter 5-2. but avenged that defeat later with cx 13-9 victory. The Bengals started their league play most auspiciously with a 12-11 victory over Hadley. In that game the Tigers scored eight runs in the last of the seventh to pull the game out of the fire. The Tigers followed this with a 6-3 victory over McKinley. Then came their first defeat 10-S to Beaumont. The eleven other lettermen either had graduated or were schol- astically ineligible. As a result this year's team consisted mostly of young, inexperienced boys, many in their second term. Although we did not have a championship team this year, the gymnasts are young and should improve with experience. The Gym Club originated in 1913 under the direction of Dr. Otto M. Koenig. Through the years the club has functioned with great success. Mr. Plag. the present sponsor. has guided the club since 1939. Its purpose is twofold: to develop a sound body and train boys to rep- resent Soldan-Blewett in the various dual gym- nastic meets. Interscholastic Gym Meet, and the A,A.U. Meet. Much work is involved in the training: it re- quires much time and toil. The boys work diligently on the horizontal bars. parallel bars. side horse, and mats.
