But we, the seniors of 1949, in the consolidation of our schools, were conf fronted with a situation which former classes had never met, a situation which led us to realize that without the attitude of cooperaf tion shown by every student and faculty member, Without their sincere desire to aid in the attainment of a loyal, sincere, and dy' namic school spirit, our senior year could never have attained the degree of success which it did. Thus, We recognize that this yearbook is symbolic of the united effort put forth to mold a school in which we may take pride, that it is the culmination of our desire to produce that material yet intangible some' thing called SoldanfBlewett High. And so, with appreciation and gratitude, we dedicate this, our yearbook, to you, our fellow students and teachers at SoldanfBlewett. Page Five .fgclminififrafion Page Six BEN H. BARR PRINCIPAL A great responsibility in the formation of Soldan-Blewett has rested upon our principal, Mr. Barr. Although a good many obstacles have arisen in this situation, Mr. Barr has coped with them in an admirable unbiased manner. This sympathetic attitude will continue to be remembered by all the students of Soldan-Blewett. E.E.CIHLES ROBERT M. YOUNG ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Mr. Young, the assistant principal of Soldan-Blewett, is charged with many of the more difficult and essen- tial duties necessary to be performed in a high school. We admire him for his conscientious efforts to make ours a better school. .xgalminizifrafion E. E. CHILES ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Every new-jay is familiar with the friendly face of Mr. Chiles. He has put forth all his energies to help the freshman students orient them- selves to the new situations of high school. Hisefforts deserve all our gratitude. ROBERT M. Our parents have responded to their call and through such organizations as the Soldan-Blewett Mothers' Club have developed a closer under- standing between parent and teacher. The monthly activities and programs of the club, supported enthusiastically by the moth- ers, are of untold benefit to the students and the school. Yet, of still greater importance, they serve to acquaint our mothers with our teachers, our activities, our life at Soldan- Blewett. lgafrond , driociafion OMPLEMENTING the activities of the Mothers' Club are the enthusiastic efforts of the Patrons' Association. These parents devote many a free evening to projects which will aid us in making our high school career a successful one. Mann was respected both for his teaching ability and his very human qualities. His teaching was enjoyed and appreciated by all of his students. He Was, at the same time, the kind of a person you would like to count as a friend. Mr. Mann was in charge of Soldan's Scrip, a job which he handled in his usual capable style. The students became indebted to him for the Work he did in this capacity. In anything he did, he had an unselfish devotion to his friends and his students. It was with the most extreme sorrow that we heard of the passing of Mr. Mann, our friend and companion. Page Eleven eniom N THE fleeting months of our senior year we have been able to glimpse but briefly the school which sprang from unwavering enerf gies of each student and faculty member. Yet in this short time, we have seen its spirit grow in sincerity and purpose, we have watched it gain the everfincreasing loyalty of its students, and we know that these are but intimations of its glorious future! Thus, we, as seniors, leave our high school days behind, filled with pride and gratif tude that we have contributed a part, small though it may be, in the formation of Soldanf Blewett. We have been Watching these lower-termers attentive- ly as they have become adjusted to high school life, for we are conscious of the fact that, in reality, they are the first stu- dents of Soldan-Blewett High. This distinc- tion, this honor, is not an empty one . . . it carries with it a great responsibility g for We can pass to these freshmen neither estab- lished tradition nor a school spirit which has reached its zenith. Yet, While giving them but a glimpse of the ideals which we cherished at our former schools, kindling but a spark of the brilliant flame which will symbolize our school spirit, we are confident that they will fulfill our highest expectations and make the name, Soldan-Blewett, one which We can look upon With ever increasing pride. Advanced members gave demonstrations which in- cluded developing, printing, enlarging, and t o n i n g . Through illustrated lec- tures, furnished by East- man Kodak Company, members have widened their knowledge of more advanced photography and have viewed the works of experts in the field. Under the keen eye of Mr. Lyon, our sponsor, several print contests have been held, where we have studied the good and bad points of our picture taking. Club mem- bers have supplied informal pictures for the yearbook. .Aff .fdiaiareciafion HE purpose of the Art Appreciation Club is to help us appreciate more intelligently the beauty around us, in nature, pic- tures, and all artistic crea- tions. In our club room, with our sponsor, Mr. Gronemeyer, We sketch, paint, and model in clay. When there is an interest- ing exhibit at the Art Mu- seum, We go to see it. This club's reason for existence is the eagerness of the members to explore all phases of art with friendly companions. ibedafing AINING c o n fi d ence, poise, and the ability to ex- press their ideas clearly and emphatically, the mem- bers of the Soldan-Blewett Debating Club have repre- sented our school in debates held over the entire city. During the past year, these students have visited other St. Louis schools and have argued the question of world federation. Their discussions, which have shown intelligent research and real understanding, have enabled them to be- come well-versed on the subject of international unification an d to gain knowledge of the principles of debating. There are many important details of the theater aside from the part viewed by an audience. The Guild offers instruction in stage make-up application, the technical part of the theater lighting, and play direction itself. During the Fall Term, the programs for the Guild were presented by various groups who gave monologues and plays. At the same time, different members were called upon to perform for the student-body at large, the Mothers' Club, and the High School Men's Club of High School Teachers. In April, the Guild felt privileged to pro- duce the recently released comedy, MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS. Everyone worked to make this play one which would long be remem- bered by all. It is the joy of singing that finds the ninety A Cappella Choir members in their places at 8 a.m. each morning in Room 300. This club, which ranks the highest of the six cho- ral groups at Soldan-Blewett, has many re- sponsibilities. Under the guidance of Miss Thym, it participates in numerous activities during the school year. Besides taking part in school programs, the members appeared on radio broadcasts over KFUO, KWK, and KSD-TV, special programs for Mothers' Clubs, P.T.A., Missouri Garden Clubs, and Unesco at Kiel Auditorium. The busiest time of all, Christmas season, found the group caroling not only at Soldan- Blewett but at Union Station, Hotel Statler, and Merchant's Exchange. The Choir as Well as the other music groups appeared in Soldan-Blewett's annual Winter concert held in its auditorium January 21. This was an- other successful performance. The Spring Term numbers one hundred and four. The music department finds time for so- cial life, also. The big social event for all music organizations every term is the Hello Day party where all the students of the music department get acquainted. Besides the usual dancing and refreshments, an amateur program is provided by the mem- bers. John Klopper, George Poney HE Vocal Ensemble is a singing group under the leadership of Miss Thym. The group, composed of both girls and boys, meets the fourth hour daily in Room 300. Some of the songs studied by this group are: Rain and the River, This Is My Country, Grand Night for Singing, and many others from light opera too numerous to mention. The music classes are divided into three groups, the junior, intermediate, and senior. The Junior Chorus comprises the iirst group, Junior Chaminade and Vocal Ensemble the second group, Boys' Glee, Senior Chaminade, and A Cappella Choir the third. Our Watch- Word still is, as it has been since Vocal En- semble was started, See with your ears and hear with your eyes. A hearty invitation is issued to all students who like to sing to join this group. HIS group is open to all freshman girls and boys who enjoy singing. Besides sing- ing, Junior Chorus studies the fundamentals of music under their sponsor, Miss Thym. The members of this organization have an opportunity to display their music talents. While many of the members of this group do not have the voice qualifications for the advanced groups, they are able to enjoy the experience of singing with a large group under a capable director. They practice in blending their voices in with those of the other members of the group. For many it is the first experience in singing with a large organization. Being a member of the Junior Chorus also helps a newcomer at Soldan- Blewett to become acquainted with the other freshmen and gives them a common interest. Through this association, a freshman comes to feel more as a member of the student body and part of student life as a whole. In this period when world cooperation and under- standing is recognized as being of utmost importance, these Soldan-Blewettites have been striving to make themselves better ac- quainted with the life of the Mediterranean peoples. Local and out of town speakers have lectured on various occasions in the last year about the customs and ceremonies of the different peoples in Asia Minor, Egypt, Syria, and Palestine. Movies which have presented a clearer, more vivid picture of the subjects discussed have been shown along with the speakers. ln addition, Ha Ivria sponsors a singing group and last year, too, they presented in Hebrew, in three large city-wide affairs, He- brew melodies. Such a study of the music of the Near Eastern countries helps them to better appreciate and more fully enjoy the cultural contributions of these peoples to the World. Outings and Wiener roasts have greatly helped to bring about closer relations among the large membership of Ha Ivria. The social activities, together with the cul- tural studies of the groups, have contributed to making Ha Ivria a most popular organi- zation Whose ever-increasing membership Works actively and enthusiastically. Ha Ivria was first organized in 1930 in both Soldan and Blewett, and for years has been enlightening its members as to the con- tributions of the literature and civilization of the Semetic culture to modern society. Page One Hundred Three flmtlaf OACH WOODROW HATFIELD in his second year in St. Louis as a coach had to start from scratch with the combination of Soldan and Blewett. Sixty fellows from both schools reported to practice September 1, 1948, and the weeding out process began. By the fourth of September the squad was down to a work- able size and they began preparing for the first game which was just five days away. Soldan-Blewett started its athletic career on a good note by defeating a highly rated East St. Louis eleven 8-6. This was one more victory than was expected of the team. With only six returning lettermen and four of these being in the backfield, Soldan-Blewett was expected to be a breather on everyone's schedule. Soldan-Blewett then ventured to U. City and played the worst game of its entire sea- son, losing to the County Champs 20-8. This game showed the Tigers' many faults that hither-to-fore had not been evident. The Tigers next went to Walsh Stadium to engage the District Champs, St. Louis U. High. After fighting a losing battle up until the closing minutes, the hyphenated eleven were brought to life by a long pass by Bill Roemerman and a few seconds later Roemer- man scored on a terrific plunge over the left side of the line. This game was highlighted by brilliant offensive and defensive play by Marv Rosengarten and Tony Karakas. Entering league play the Tigers had a rec- ord of win, loss, and one tie. Jim Mahew scored both touch- downs to lead his mates to victory. Both of the touchdowns were directly responsible to beautiful passes thrown by Bill Roemerman. The next game was a heart breaker in more than one way. The team lost the serv- ices of a wonderful halfback when Angelo Lombardo broke his leg, and they lost the game 7-6 in the last two minutes of play. The night of October 29 the Union Ave- nue eleven lost the third game of their cur- rent season by one point to the District Champs of 1948. The boys led at the half 12-0, but were not able to hold that lead. They fought all the way, never admitting defeat, but the extra point meant the differ- ence, 20-19. Southwest promptly proceeded, the next week, to trample the downhearted Tigers 26-7. From here the team went up, defeating the Cleveland eleven 19-14, and having a wonderful time beating Central 24-6. They might have been more of a threat throughout the season had they been able to make extra points. They lost three victories by that margin. One was not a defeat, but might have been a victory, if-but it's too late now. At the close of the season the new school had a very successful record considering the circumstances, ending up with four wins, four losses, and a tie. HE G.A.A., or the Girl's Athletic Asso- ciation, is an organization open to girls of Q.!d..!4. all terms who are interested in acquiring a better knowledge and practice of sports. The club, one of the largest in our school, provides an afternoon of fun a week for the girls, and also rewards them for their - AA4- achievements. A girl earns points in G.A.A. in many ways. Posture tests, perfect attendance, achievement tests, and tournaments are all part of a plan for earning points. When five hundred fifty points have been acquired, a girl receives a small letter, eleven hundred points earns her a large letter. A gold pin is awarded to those girls who have earned a large letter, have a G average, who pass a physical examination, and have proved themselves good citizens of the school. Page One Hundred Twelve Many tournaments are played in G.A.A. In spring, basketball provides an opportu- nity for Winning a championship. In fall, volleyball is the competitive sport. The Ones through Eights played a round robin, that is, they play each of the other teams, and the team Winning the most games is declared champion. Always present at pep sessions and at the games and contests in which our teams participate, these students have contributed a large share in producing the loyal, friendly spirit and the fine sportsmanship which Soldan-Blew- ettites have exhibited. As they compose new cheers, teach them to the student body and promote enthusiasm and interest in athletic events, our cheer- leaders find themselves faced with a job which occupies much of their spare time. Yet, these students willingly devote their hours to this activity and have done an ex- ceedingly fme job of fostering friendliness, cooperation, and enthusiasm among the stu- dents. During the year of 1948-49, the Soldan- Blewett cheerleaders were Jean Dewhirst, Joycelyn Schrum, Harriet Birenbaum, Bob Mocciola, Douglas Tulper, Sandy Lowen- stein, Marvin Luger, Lorraine Garfield, and Sheila Kalish.
