Our campus grew bigger and bet- ter. Bigger in the sense that the Ju- nior high School was united with the High School campus which certainly eased the growing pains of the high school. Not only did our campus grow big- ger but our student body, faculty, and administration also grew. Our athletic department, clubs and orga- nizations also expanded. Students were aware of the extended and dif- ferent new courses offered at school. This indeed stirred a deep emotion of pride in the student body towards their school. The Socorro Indepen- dent School District has come a long way and is still reaching into the fur ture. Qpening 3 an ,f vwfdd The 1984 El Chato is dedicated to Ms. Mary Ruth Hart. Ms. Hart has been at Socorro for eight years, teaching Phys- ics, Chemistry and Biology. Sue re- ceived her M.A. at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. Ms. Hart dedicates much of her free time to students who need help in the sciences. She is also active in school affairs, co-sponsoring the Key Club. A real Bulldog Booster, she takes a great interest in school athletics. The El Chato staff wishes to give Ms. Hart this honor as a partial repayment of the love and the dedication to learn- ing that she has shown us over the years. V f-m-f' 4' A ll: QU Our honoree prepares to teach the lesson of the day in one of her Chemistry classes. 125 Ms. Hart shows her trusty Bunsen Burner C31 Ms Hart attends an in-service meeting. These new students brought with them new dreams and goals, new ideas and new challenges, adding more excitement to the changing environment - giv- ing new meaning to the word SO- CORRO. Preparations started long before with OEA girls selling garters and corsages. The Student Council always has their share with the car decorating contest and the Junior class decorated the main hall and the dance hall for Homecoming day. Homecoming Day, October 7, 1983, started off with the exchanging of corsages and garters. The pep ral- ly during first period was the row- diest Homecoming pep rally ever. The Homecoming Court was intro- duced: Freshman Duchess was Yvonne Garcia escorted by Adrian Garcia, Sophomore Duchess was Corina Martinez escorted by Patrick Sifuentesg Junior Duchess was San- dra Grijalva escorted by Danny Zara- gosag Senior Duchesses were Viola Avila escorted by Marko Lopez, Lau- ra Hernandez escorted by lsidro Ma- cedo and Lady-in-waiting was Sandra Herrera escorted by Benny Lopez. The Homecoming Queen was lrene Flores escorted by Abel Ornelas. 85 Jerry Garcia won the car decorat- ing contest. The only Change made in the Homecoming traditions was the elimination of the annual bon fire by the Socorro Fire Dept. A little disap- pointed at this, but with no less spirit, the Bulldogs set out to make it the best Homecoming ever. Everyone headed for the football game at 7:30. The Socorro Bulldogs hosted the Hanks Knights, but lost 28-0. This didn't stop the Bulldogs, they danced the night away at Sts. Peter and Paul Hall. ill The winning car at the car decorating contest was entered by Jerry Garcia and Olga Barraza. Q21 Irma Natividad holds up the home- coming corsages and garters sold by OEA. Students organized their time properly in order to get things done. Club meetings were held in the morn- ings or during lunch periods. No one had spare time on his handsg every- one was too busy doing classwork, organizing activities or getting dates. No matter what they were doing, they kept up with a hectic schedule, rolling with the flow of the school system. Some strove to be actors, some to be athletes, and some to be straight A students. Occasionally the students would take time out to relax under the campus trees. ill Students enjoy the shade during lunch break. L25 Julie Martinez calls home. Much progress has been made in the Socorro School District this year. ln both the academic and athletic realms, we have exper- ienced many changes. Many new classes were offered this year: Computer Science was made a re- quirement for graduation for all fu- ture classesg extra Physical Edu- cation classes such as Aerobics, Modern Dance and Archery were added. Our athletic teams began to compete on an equal footing this year, fielding some very compete- tive teams. Our Girl's Varsity Vol- leyball team led the district for most of the yearg our Cross-Coun- try teams continued to place in all meets entered. The Varsity Foot- ball team, though not a constant winner, is no longer an easy- touch. The bigger schools such as Bel Air and Hanks and Eastwood had very tough games with the Bulldogs. , 'F 2.
