Escontrias Elementary School was rededicated Nov. 12, and re- turned to its orginal name, which has been changed many times over the years. The school was origin- ally named for the family who donated the land for the school, and the Escontrias family was hon- ored at the dedication. The district also began con- struction of Campestre Elemen- tary School, located at Socorro and Passmore roads. It will be ready for classes in the 1982-1983 school year. Two other schools will also be built and ready for classes in the 1983-1984 school year, keeping pace with the rapid growth of the district. S new 0-'J' als' .. Mus1c 18 the right key Mr. jim Shelton , i 1 Q -. Accomplishing a lot means do- ing a lot, and the Socorro High School Band does a lot. What it lacks in size it makes up for it with perfection. Many of its' members made All-Region Band, which is quite an accomplishment. The Band played in many places this year, such as the Socorro Pa- rade, the Veteran's Day Parade, and competed at many concerts. They competed at U.T.E.P. and received a 2 in competition, one step away from being superior. They also performed at the annual Christmas concert and attended a convention in Phoenix, Ariz. , Q11 Andy Sanchez plays a solo for Mr. Shelton, band director. f2j Mrs. Marlene Meagher, flag corps instructor, copies mu- sic for practice. gay The SHS band marched to the Mission during a parade in Socorro. f4j Members of mixed choir work on a tune for their Christmas perfor- mance. fij Choir instructor, Mrs. Nancy Ashley, hits a high note. 16, A one, a two, and three, and four. . . Socorro added another enjoy- able classg this is the first year that we've had a choir. Choir is helpful in many ways, providing the devel- opment of voices and allowing persons going into a singing field, as a career, a head start. Even if people aren't going into the singing field, you'll find no matter what, every time you turn around you're humming with the radio. Choir also gives the oppor- tunity to learn about and be a part of music as an art. When one per- forms, he gets to be the music. Q 5 132 Academics
