In order to accomplish this, many of us stud- ied, practiced and listened. We joined in events that made the school year exciting. But in doing all of this, we also reached our peak of striving for goals, to clear the path that the future held and will hold for us. As we excelled in these activi- ties we also accomplished another very important goal in our school life that we all shared, which was and still is promoting our Bulldog Pride. . It was a very difficult decision, since al- most everyone at SHS contributes to some activity. The staff finally came up with a name we felt met our standards. We proudly dedi- cate this yearbook to the entire student body of Socorro High School. We gladly dedicate this year- book to those students who com- 8 Dedication pete for, represent,.and help So- corro High be what it 'is today. We thank those of -you who helped spread the word of a grand high school, along with the extension of the Bulldog Pride throughout El Paso. Socorro I-iigh School would have no clubs, no organizations, no activities if it weren't for stu- dent participation. There were quite a variety of organizations of- fered, including some which were new, like Choir and VICA. Some students were competitive and enjoyed going to other schools to represent Socorro in various areas. Others busied them- selves helping people and joined such groups as Key Club and Spanish Club. Still other students were involved in athletics or took up their role just being students. Each of us may very well have had different tastes and attitudes toward school functions, but all of us, joined together, form the stu- dent body of Socorro High. It took much effort to make the week be- come a very successful one. The juniors started off the Homecoming activities by cele- brating 'junior Week. They sponsored special days and deco- rated the halls and lockers. Most important was the planning and organization of the dance and the selection of Godfather's Disco to play. Our traditional bonfire was lit Wednesday night. Everyone gath- ered around and cheered as Bull- dog spirit rose. The band and cheerleaders added life to the bonfire. Friday morning was filled with tension and excitment, for Home- coming day had finally arrived. Students exchanged corsages and garters, and decorated their cars, showing that their pride and spirit was high. Afterwards, during lunch, crowds gathered around the decorated cars as judges exam- ined them. In the afternoon the student body gathered in the bleachers to participate in the most-spirited pep rally of the year. The Home- coming Court was given corsages presented by junior Class Vice President Rosemary Perez and ju- nior Darlene Calderon. The varsi- ty football team, coaches and exes were also given recognition at the pep assembly. Special guests in- cluded jocks from radio station KSET. The varsity football team gave us their best as they tackled the Riverside Rangers. The audience cheered and shouted for the Bull- dogs throughout the home game. Even though we lost our Home- coming game, we still had that spunk that took us from the begin- ning to the end of the game. The dance, held at Trejo's hall, lifted up Bulldog spirits after the tire- some game. 18 Homecoming X F5 f' . f'fEf7fr'.-WW..f.1.,aeEs. L, f.',-,. i , . . With all these ac- tivities, faculty and students pre- pared for the upcoming months. This gave us enthusiasm, inspira- tion, and hope to accomplish our goals. Fall Activities 2 1 With Winter at our doors, we suddenly feel the rising joy of Christmas. This year Christmas brought new and interesting ac- tivities. With the yearly visit of Santa Claus came the excitement of coming up with someone who looked like Santa. Not ever suc- ceeding, La Chispa Staff took the leading roles. But through study and practice a person's curiosity can be changed to truth and knowl- edge. From solving an algebraic equation to disecting a bullfrog, we learn more about the world in which we live. From knowing that you have the correct change when you go to the store, to figuring out the probability of drawing to an inside straight, mathematics pre- pares us for the future. We attain knowledge through scientific study for the betterment of mankind. Academics 143 Art, drafting develop skill Art and drafting classes are the fine and applied arts of represen- tation, decoration, and writing or printing on flat surfaces, together with the techniques and crafts as- sociated with them. The rest of us have had to learn to sell ads and design layouts. We worked after school and weekends, bringing new ideas, lots of hope, and effort to complete and deliver the year- book by May. We all grew closer, working together and supporting each other with our work. This 1982 El Chato holds a part of each member of staff. We hope you will appreciate it as much as we do.
