Cindy is a senior spiker for the Varsity Volleyball team and has also played Varsity Basketball. Cindy Koonsman loops one across as Dana Elrod backs her up. 85 The Snyder High School varsity volleyball team virtually walked off with the state title this year, as they knocked off 34 opponents while only losing three games. Tournaments this year, other than playoff tournaments, included the Angelo State Tournament in which they placed 3rd. Making all tourney were Kim Har- Iin, Dana Myers and Kathy Harrell. Next they competed in the Seminole Tour- nament in which they placed 1st. Kathy Harrell made all tournament. The last non-playoff tournament was the Berkner Tournament. They finished in 4th place here. Choosen to all tournament was Dana Elrod and Dana Myers. After the pre-district tournaments came the hard fought post season tourna- ments. The first was the regional tournament. Snyders first opponent was Borger in which they surpassed easily. Next came Monahans. This game went three sets with Snyder standing on top at the games end. The next week they headed to Austin for the state tournament. The first opponent was Everman in which they defeated in two sets. Then came the show down, the state championship. The varsity girls went all out and in three sets beat Waxahachie for the state title. Making All-District were Dana Elrod, Kathy Harrell and Cindy Koonsman. Also Honorable Mention All District were Dana Myers, Sherry Neves and Kim Harlin. Being honored by being selected to the All-Region Team were Kathy Harrell, Cindy Koonsman and Dana Elrod. Special honor wnt to these same girls when they were named to the All-State Tournament Team. Junior Varsity Ends Season At 17 And 6 The Junior Varsity, coached by Joyce Elrod, completed their season with a 19 win and 6 loss record. Or in a simpler definition, a speech. There are many aspects of speech. Poetry, prose, or short stories, debate, persausive speaking and informative speaking. These are the categories in which to compete. Mr. Jerry Worsham, drama and speech di- rector, has trained and advanced students all the way from the classroom to state competi- tion. Bryan Lewallen has won in state two years in a row for his poetry readings. Also this year, Scott Marlar and Sherilyn Camp- bell advanced to state to be two of the top five in prose competition. Dancing, singing and drama were among the acts featured. Mr. Jerry Wor- sham directed the production. The play The Christmas Carol was a major part. Bryan Lewallen held the audiences atten- tion with his rendition of Scrooge. Mr. Bill Lyon directed the Swingers. They sang their version of some popular Christmas carols. Snyder was also honored by the presence of a young celebrity. Brad Maule. He sang several songs including a few he wrote himself. We were also honored by a second guest, Donny Burk. Alvin Dark Speaks On Sportsmanship To start off the year, the Fel- lowship of Christian Athletes had a watermelon feast in Mr. Carter's back yard. During football season, FCA built the winning homecoming float. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes sold advertisements for the Canyon Reef Basketball Tournament and also earned money from working in conces- sion stands for all sports. The FCA met in the Student Center April 10 to play games and discuss what FCA is really about with Dan Stevens and Wayne Shuffield from Hardin- Simmons University. To end the year, FCA had a banquet at the Shack with guest speaker Alvin Dark and held Dog Patch Activities led by Texas Tech students in the girls gym. Madam Gaborit, a native of Poitiers, France, spoke to the French classes about her country. Members of the club also sampled Perrier water, a drink from the mineral springs in France. To finish out the year, the club travelled to Lubbock and ate at Crepe Suzettes. The Student Council theme for '78 — '79 school year was Together- ness. One innovation for the Student Council this year was the Blood Drive which was co-sponsored by the South Plains Blood Service in Lubbock. Another was the addition of a new membership rule. This rule stated that if a person attended six consecutive meetings he was eligible for mem- bership.
