They are: Mr. T. E. McCollum, Superintendent, Dr. Wilton N. Jones, President, Mr. E. H. Williamson, Vice President, Mr. Lee Stone, Mr. Malven K. Stevenson, Mr. J. W. Phillips, Mr. Max West, and Mr. Bill Schiebel. eafing The Snyder School Board is responsible for providing adequate facilities in the school system. They always keep the students' needs in mind in planning the curriculum and extra aids which contribute not only to the students' education but also to health, personality, and discipline. MCCOLLUM, Superintendent 7fae ww... Mr. McCollum served his second year as Superintendent of the Snyder Public Schools this year. He has proven to be a competent administrator. He has appeared before the student body several times, which has helped the students to know him better. He is always eager to counsel students who need his help. Stanfield, the Assistant Superinten- dent, has contributed greatly to the Snyder schools through the years. His efficient service was acknowledged by the school board when they named Snyder's newest elementary school in his honor. Mr. Stanfield is a well-known and appre- ciated school figure to the student body of Snyder High School. In his first year as the Director of Curriculum, wu- Clois Henry has done an excellent job in Providing the schools with a well-rounded Program of m' struction. -...V Mr. E. D. Flynn, as the Director of Business Services, has done an excellent job. He is in charge of all the financial matters. ,,., M flwliw' mwssmwkbl ancf fb' ' Mr. Fla Joyce, who is in charge of Maintenance, supervises all improvements to the buildings and grounds of the school system. He is alsoin charge of all the bus routes and arrangements for school trips. Mr. G. R. Austin, who this year Celebrated his eightieth birthday, has served for the last nine years as Director of Mail Service. During his years of service, he has become one ofthe mostbeloved persons in the school system and all those who have come to know him regret that he is retiring this year. ,ww .l,,.w-W' Mrs. Sam Spikes, Cafeteria Director, is responsible for the planning of ade- quate meals at a low cost for all the Snyder schools. 15 aaefpinq in Three of the secretaries at the Administra - tion Building are: Miss Hazel Lewis, Mrs. E. WIMAN, Principal This has been Mr. Wiman's thirteenth year as Principal of Snyder High School. During this time the enrollment of the school has more than tripled, and the number and variety of courses offered has shown a corresponding increase. Mr. Wiman's capable hand- ling of the problems involved in a growing school has been respon- sible for much of the progress made by Snyder High School. Mr. Jack Longbotham, as Counselor, helps students plan their high school programs and administers achievement tests and scholar- ship tests. He also advises students in their college or vocational plans and is always willing to listen to personal problems which the student may have. fjmatv Mr. J. M. Kayser, Assistant Principal, has instilleda sense of discipline and responsibility in Snyder High School. He is respected by all the students for his 1m partial treatment of everyone. Mrs. J. E. Waller, Secretary to Mr. Wiman, has also served as Registrar for SHS. She carries on numerous duties in the Principal's office. Her ready smile and willingness to help students and visitors make the office a cheerful place. uw! Mrs. J. M. Moffett keeps the attendance records of all the students. She also super- vises the student office workers. Her plea- sant disposition is an inspiration to every- one. N., has been very effective in helping students of Snyder High School develop good health habits. Mrs. Hugh Lowry is the Secre- tary in the Audio Visual Depart- ment. Studies of English literature, study habits and grammar are enjoyed by her students of English IV. In English II she teaches aunit on mythology in addition to regular s tudie s . Baa ' Mr. Virgil Joines in English III teaches appreciation of American Literature by detailed studies of American Authors. He also encourages his students to in- crease their vocabulary so that their reading comprehension will be greater. Shown with Mr. Joines are Leatha Brice, Charles Merritt, and Nelda Matthews. Mrs. M. M. O'Rear, teacher of English III and IV, opens broad vistas of know- ledge to her students through detailed studies of American and English litera- ture. She makes the authors live for her students as they learn about them. Effec- tive communication skills such as poetry and essay writing are also stressed by Mrs. O'Rear, Picturedwith Mrs.O'Rear are Ginny Sims, Kenneth Haught, and Carol Strom. Slucfewh' Mr. Jack Gorman has helped manyFre sh- man students to lay a foundation for their high school English studies. Through his able guidance students learn basic gram- mar skills, lib r a r y science, and an appreciation of literature. Pictured with him are Glenda White and Mitchell Duke. Miss Margaret Miller, a teacher of English II and III in Snyder High School has been very helpful in furthering her students in English. She is showing a notebook to Beverly Black, Pat Dunn, Nelda Pevehouse, and Lynnda Bradley. Mrs. Arel Faver makes English II an exciting adventure through many projects. Students study short stories, mystery stories anda short novel, Silas Marner, besides going into grammar into detail. Miss Heinen teaches English I and Journalism as well as sponsoring the school newspaper, the Tiger's Tale. In Journalism, students are taught the fundamentals of newspaper writing. By working on the Tiger's Tale, the students get a good chance to put their knowledge to the test of usage. Mrs. W. N. Shiflett is shown instructing Bill Weaver, John Best, and Stuart Long. She teaches Spanish I and English I. In the Spanish classes, students are given a basic vocabulary with practice in speaking the languageg they are givena chance to learn more about their own language by comparing it with the foreign tongue. In her teaching, Mrs. Burchett supple- ments Latin Iand II and Spanish II with many interesting facts about Roman and Spanish cultures. Nelson, the competent Head Librarian, helps the students in their academic work by keeping the Library up- to-date in publications about the events of today and the history of yesterday, plus many books for enjoyment. In Photography, students learn the fundamental con- cepts of taking and developing good pictures, they also receive instruc- tion about different types of cameras. P. Ward has several classes of American History. In these classes, the past of the nation is discussed. One of the aims of this course is to help students realize the influence of the years gone by uponpresent-day Ameri- can ways of life. Mr. Ward is also a member of the coaching staff. Solid Geometry is a study of three dimen- sional figures. Trigonometry deals with mathematical functions and other short-cuts to solving pro- blems. Jimmy Don Robinson, Mike Moffett, Jerry Guthrie, and Buddy Patterson are shown working with the slide rule. Sfaafqz '9 Mr. Rondell Cooper teaches classes in Plane Geometry and Algebra I. Plane Geo- metry is a study of those figures which may be drawn on a flat sur- faceg it requires much use of logic in solving problems. Mrs. Jones take s the artistically -inclined student and helps him develop his talents. Mo- dern and classical art are taught, giving the students a better under- standing of the world's cultural herit- age. Mr. Dan Prewitt is the Assistant Band Di- rector. He has been at SHS one year. Mr. Prewitt does many things to help the band members further develop their talents. He is pictured here with Ray Lashaway, Dorothy Payne, and Mike Reed. Hmm Mr. W. R. McMullan and three members of the Future Farmers of America stand by the monument which the club erected near the Shop Building. The members are Richard Robinson, Billy Tarter, and Frank- lin Gilbert. As teacher of Vocational Agriculture, Mr. McMullan covers a broad field. He instructs the boys in many skills vital to the farming and ranching industries, such as grass indentification, livestock judg- ing, and parliamentary procedures. , 's ex ,gg 4 Mrs. Dan Martin, who teaches Sewing I, 11, and III, not only has helped her students in learning how to sew, but she has also given them a study in child care that will help them in their future. She is always willing to help her students with their personal problems. She is pictured above helping LaNelle Wood- son, Betty Longbotham, and Marcia Stone with their sewing projects. Miss Vera Periman is shown with Georgia Spence and Judy Richardson. They have been studying table settings. Miss Pe riman teaches her students the fundamentals of home eco- nomics as well as instruction in advanced phases to some of her older students. Miss Periman teaches Cooking I, Il, and III, The various divisions of study in this courses in- clude cooking, nutrition, management and family life. Walaal-le Z ' Mr. Curtis Wise heads the Distributive Education De- partment, which is available to students who work during and after school hours in any retailing, wholesaling or servicing job. The students learn various skills which aid them in building better relations with customers. Fred Reynolds, Lorndell Ewing, Mr. Wise and Mary Stephens are looking over the club's scrapbook. Mr. J. C. Jackson, Barbara Jarvis, Troy Cook, and Esther Firestone inspect the scrapbook of the Vocational Industrial Club. The club is made up of students who take Industrial Cooperative Training. This course allows students to work during and after school hours on a job requiring technical skills, while also working toward a high school diploma. lea ' Mr. W. A. Mayfield shows Tommy La- Roux, Wayne Key, and Dewayne Lee how to use one of the machines in the shop. Mr. Mayfield teaches Woodshop I and II and serves as head of the Industrial Department of the school system, In Wood courses, Stu- dents are taught skills of woodworking. In his position as Industrial Director, Mr. Mayfield co-ordinates the work of the industrial and crafts courses in all grade levels. . , O WW Vjw f W' Mr. Frank Miller teaches classes in Drafting I and II and Metalshop I and II. In these courses, students receive instruction in methods which will prove valuable to them if they enter the industrial world. Mr. Miller explains an assignment to David Gan, John Eeds, and Judy Nachlinger. -wi General and Advanced Crafts are courses which are goodpreparation for students who will enter such fields as ceramics or leather-working. Miss Thelma Leslie, who teaches Typing I and II, plans work that will be of maximum benefit and helps the student to type up schoolwork. Mr. Ronald McHenry, one of the new teachers in Snyder High, has taught Junior Business, Bookkeeping, and Commercial Law. They are Johnny Joyce, Patsy Ramsey, and Diane Young. Coach John Conley is widely known as the SHS Director of Athletics. Coach Conley works with the other coaches to maintaina superior pro- gram of athletics. '4 '7afe The Tiger's Tale, the school paper, was published bi -weekly by the members of the Journalism Class. The paper has aimed at promoting better school and community spirit. It has featured such articles as personality sketches, sports Writeups, special features, and coverage of all important news events around the campus. The 'I'iger's Tale is a member of the Inter- scholastic League Press Conference and the Texas High School Press Association. The Circulation Manager for the newspaper this year was Pat Cary. Bill Murphy was Assistant Business Manager with Jimmy Moseley heading the business staff as Manager. Pat was in charge of the distribution of the finishednewspapers, while Jimmy and Bill handled the advertising and finances of the newspaper. IWW Three of the Reporters for the paper staff are pictured at right. They are Aunita Teague, Lynda Rosson, and Tim Williamson. For each issue, a dif- ferent member of the staff writes the Purrs, which is a personality sketch. The Bulldogs dumped the Cats for a 12-O loss. It was a defense bout all the way, with some very fine tackling and blocking shown on both sides. The Bulldogs scored in the first quarter with a 3 -yard plunge by Wooly, the extra point failing. During the second half, the only scoring threat by the Tigers was a Hayes- Walker combination which was good for 13 yards. On the following play fullback Eddie Watson carriedfor another 13-yards. Moore is shown holding the ball. A herd of Big Spring Steers went home slightly beaten Sept. 25. In the first quarter Hayes barreled around right end and loped 80 yards for 6 points. Jones converted and the score read 7-O in favor of Snyder. The second quarter found Jones putting his toe to good use as he split the uprights from the 28 mak- ing the score 10-O. The Steers made their lone TD in the third quarter with T Lassiter driving the needed two yardsg the try for extra point failed. Early in the fourth quarter Watson crushed through the Steer line for six yards and six points. Jones provided the extra point. Watson and Fitzgerald both scored later in the game with .Tones keeping a perfect record. The Tigers took the opening kickoff and marched to a quick first down. After an exchange of punts the Tigers started on their own 2.2-yd. line but a pass interception by Jimmy Owen stopped this. As the second half got started the Panthers made their first down of the game. A 55-yd. punt by Crain was too slick for Hayes. Mof- fett saved the day by re- covering a fumble. Per- mian got started on the running of Tatum and Golden and the 15 yard personal foul penalty. It was first and goal to go. After Golden banged three times it was fourth down andl yard to gog he made it. Halfback Frank McCoy was stopped just short of two points. The score stood at that the rest of the game. In the contest be- tween the teams, Kennedy weasled through the Tigers line and marched 80 yds. for the first 6 points. Hayes' toss to Robinson netted ll- yards, followed by 13 more to Moffett. Walker gathered 20 more. Hayes bolted 8- yards for those ever-loving 6 points. In the second quarter, Breck crossed paydirt. A determined gang of Tigers marched upfield for 67 yards, after receiving the kickoff. Hayes then crossed the 2 yards for a TD. The Hayes-Walker combination succeeded for the extra points. The score then stood at 14- 14, Following the half Breck changed this by a TD and extra points. In the last few seconds Hayes punted 50 yards. The Wolves made a punt which Hayes returned for a score. Jones' kick was goody this gave the Tigers a 19-O lead athalf- time. After the half 50- yards and 9 plays were re- quired for the scoreg Jones' kick was good. Walker uncovered a fumble which set up the Tigers' fifth TD. Cross carried the pigskin over. When Sweetwater tried to run it out Gladson nailed the ball carrier behind the goal line for 2 points. Nine players shared the scoring spree with 54-0 results. It was a night of odd occurrence with Jones turning into a swivel hip halfback and Strickland becoming a lumbering lineman. Hayes took over the end position with Walker running the show at quarterback slot. The game began with Hayes loping 85 yards and Jones putting his toe into the ball making the score 7-O with the game only 13 seconds old. Snyder kicked off and took over the ball after four unsuc- cessful plays by Lake View. In three plays Snyder had another TD by Strickland, After the exchange of the ball Berry crashed over for another TD. .Tones rode again and halfway through the first quarter the score was 20-0. In the second quarter, Hayes ran 77-yards for 6 points. Minton kicked the extra point. The other TD's were by Morris, Cross, Moffett and Dyer. Jones and Minton fared well in kicking.
