What did he do to deserye such an honor? uestlons such as thesc haxe puzzled many Snyder students lt IS hoped this brief blography will supply the answers Had he lived till now, Henry Snyder would he more than eighty two years of age, having been born ln Easton, Pennsylvania, on January 30 1858 where he attended the publlc schools At the comparatlvely early age of sixteen he entered Laflyette College, in Easton Herc his rewards were numerous At the graduation exercises he received the classical honox In quick succession the degrees of Bachelor of Arts Master of Arts, and Doctor of Science were conferred upon him Soon afterwards he was appomted the principal of Easton High School In 1881 Dr Snyder came to Jersey City After teaching Latln and Creek at the old Jersey City High Schol for four years he became the pr1nc1palofPubl1c School No 2 His SCTVILC in this capacity was brief, howevcr for fifty years ago Henry Snyder was elected by the Jeisey City Board of laducatlon to the ofhce of superintendent of schools lXot content with his regular duties as superintendent of schools Hemy Snyder engaged lll on such matters as compulsory education vocational trammff medical IIISPCLUOII and teachers pensions President of the Council of lzducatlon of 1Ncw Jersey 1n 1902 President of the State Teachers Assoclatlon ll! 1906 President of the Department of Superlntendence of the National Educational As SOLIHIIOII and Chairman of the Committee on Mllltary Education of American Youth all these and many more was Henry Snyder scholar educator, humanitarian and public serxant The year many of us were horn 1923 a man among men went forth from this earth to .1 higher place At the age of 65 Dr Henry Snydcz after thuty one years of noble service went to his reward Little wonder then that this one of the fincst high schools in the country, was named as a small token of tllbute, the Hemy Snyder High School V 1 - V 'J v 1 1 17 r - - - - ' ' I ' v ' '- ' c , f , ' ' . - ' f ' c ' ' . . .I . .
