College is seeing — seeing the physical makeup of the campus, buildings, and grounds. College is seeing the human element of the campus — people, students, and teachers. College is seeing the integration of these factors into a workable whole. College is being—it is being a person. It is being a person who is succeeding, or failing; it is being a person who is groping, and searching, and perhaps finding; it is being a person who is lost, or whom has found himself, who has become a part, who belongs, who is moving forward toward some distant goal. It is being sad, happy, wistful or satisfied. It is being a part of a search for character; it is being a part of a search for the answer to dreams or aspirations. It is being a member of a fraternity of young people eager to find their place in society. College is doing — it is the rhythmic tapping of fingers on typewriter keys; the bone jarring tackles on autumn afternoons; the assembling of data, the writing of notes, the dancing, the singing and listening. It is expressing oneself through unselfish participation in collegiate activities. College is hearing—the gabble of voices in the Campus Center; the clicking of heels down hallways as late-goers hurry to class; the low murmur from classrooms, and sometimes laughter; the ceaseless sounds by day, the long silences of night. College is hearing the sounds of people, of students and faculty working and playing together. 3
