When one thinks of leaving, one immediately thinks of roads , this is why Highways is a natural theme for this year's annual. Roads play an important part in our every- day life, the economy of the nation is depend- ent, to a degree, on the roads which we use everyday. They lead everywhere. The high- way of life on which we are about to depart also leads everywhere. A good road foundation has been laid by long hours of studying, a fine, smooth surface has been placed on top of the foundation by the many hours of social events which we have thoroughly enioyed. We have each built this road, now let us follow it. It shall bring each of us to a different place in lifeg a family, a career, success, and perhaps fame. As we step upon this highway, let us TWO LM 6 'K M A A in M 'fi -i. l . fa 'af , 52 -'ferr fm W' 'QL if - A TW' if Mk Q ,Y f -1 W f. fa . Perhaps there will be a very few who will experience a recession when placed upon this long road. Some will travel forward until their curiosity is satisfied, there they will stop, never 'io move forward again. But, we hope, the maiority of the i958 graduation class will never be satisfied because when satisfaction is reach- ed, progress stops. Although we may be well along on our iourney during the years of tornorrow, there is something about this great and mysterious highwayea face, a name, or a word ethat will remind us of our stay at Snohomish High. With these words in mind, let us look over the following pages which represent the past year. WYZ Life is a lourney which starts on a narrow path As you progress Through The elementary school The paTh broadens To a road The road in Turn becomes a four lane highway as The complexities of high school and adolescence hit you at The same time Now at graduation you must venture onto The freeway This will be a new exciting experience You will have To be alert patient and courTeous. Failure To follow The lessons learned along The paths and smaller highways will spell disaster on The freeway. I wish you luck in The perilous iourney ThaT lies ahead. These are the foreign languages offered at Snohomish High School. The purpose of the organization, Lambda Kai Epsilon. is to provide foreign language stu- dents an opportunity to learn about other peo- ple of the world and their cultures. This year's activities were begun with the election of officers. These were: Mary Lee Pettibone, president, Ric Odegard, vice-presi- clent, Ann Uran, secretary, and Lary Kaiser, treasurer. Judy Riley was appointed enter- tainment chairman. A group of students interested in dramatics formed a theatrical association within Lambda Kai Epsilon. They called it the Circle Theater and for the organization's annual Christmas Party they put on a play. It was the Spanish version of Cinderella and the dialogue was in Spanish. At the January meeting a native of Austral- ia, Mrs. Margaret Stevenson, qave a talk on the Australian aborigines and their culture. She spoke of the present Australians, their customs, schools, social interests, and attitude toward Americans. February 18 the Circle Theater made it's second and third appearances. This time the play given at the Christmas Party was given for the students of Central and Emerson Grade Schools. On February 25 members of Lambda kai Epsilon went to Brown's Theater in Snohom- ish to see the Italian film, Wages of Fear. The annual banquet was held April 22, bringing to a climax a very successful year. G50 '55, 11 u... This was girls' tumbling. Several of the seven girls who turned out that first year are still among the twenty-four girls who make up the group today. These girls spend each activity period faithfully practicing their many basic single and double stunts on the mats. This year they also work out on the trampoline. Practice makes perfect, and these hard work- ing girls can do some fairly breath taking things. They have taken part in the Orthopedic programs in the past and also in the polio nights and exchange assemblies. Many of the cheer leaders have found this class helpful in working out many new rou- tines to cheer the teams on. GOLF A new spring sport was added this year it is golf There were approximately thirteen boys in the activity group and about nine of those turned out after school During late fall and early spring they headed for the playing field with the clubs and a sack of golf balls to practice their driving and putting Mr Lamkin was the adviser of this group and he hoped to increase interest in golf for the years to come Most of the turnouts were held at the Monroe Golf Course These were really games with competition and true team spirit PING PONG Tap tap tap came the sounds from the stu dent center during the past year Mr Alan Hansen organized the ping pong activity for the first time There were sixteen students participating They held singles and doubles tournaments among the class Jerry Carlson and Gary Bowen were doubles champions Pat Guillaume singles championship In the first semester tournament with the agriculture activity Mr Hansens sharp shoot ers won both the singles and doubles cham pionshlps I . That was iust one of the acts which participated in the exchange assemblies this year. On March I8 the students of Snohomish were awarded a sneak preview of what was to come. The en- tire program was given for the student body. This program also served as a dress rehearsal for the students appearing in the acts. The assembly was held at Arlington on March 25. Next the troup traveled to Marysville on April 9. The acts were chosen from those which ap- peared in the annual polio night program. Jerry Saulter was chosen from a field of three to act as master of ceremonies. The par- FORTY-EIGHT ticipating acts were as follows: Judy Riley pantomime to Gumdrop- Sue Baxendale violin solo- John Porter Frances Lange Mar- lene Mclntosh and Jim Dorsey tumbledg Sandy deSoto sang a calypso number- Myrtle and Mary Bowerman and Madeline Brands- ma girls trio- Marvel Johnson and Linda For- tune each sang a popular song. Others appearing were the Melodiers and the boys quartet. A highlight of the perform- ances was the comedy team of Alan Troupe Pete McPhail Ken Joy Mel Hanson Art Davis and Dave Cross known as the Jugs. A special attraction was the ever-popular dance band. This year they added a feature singer to their combo. Donna Shong sang many of the popular blues songs with the band. M . Election of second semester A.S.B. officers produced only one change - Judy Riley was named to the position of secretary. Other of- ficers maintained their status quo. Many times in the past it was suggested that student telephone books be published. Ruth Wheeler was appointed to be in charge of them, and she did what no one had been able to do previously she had them pub- lished f and for only 25c a copy. A great many of the students signed pledges to assure the sale of the books. Judy Riley was appointed chairman of the Teachers' Appreciation Day , strictly a stu- dent-planned affair, A coffee hour in honor of the high school faculty was held after school in the cafeteria. A poem especially for them was written and read by Sandy deSoto lt was pointed out that Snohomish is the only school known to feature such a day of ap preclatton A Litterbug Court was a main source of discussion for many weeks but the council decided that the problem of messy halls and walks could be eliminated if all the council members would do their part in cleaning up Through the efforts of the enthusiastic student council the mission was accomplished ASB OFFICERS 2nd Semester back row Eugene Mc Phail Gary Meacham Front row Judy Riley Sandy Schott A special committee was chosen to investi- gate possibilities of securing a stuffed panther which would be awarded the class showing the most pep, volume of noise, and co-opera- tion at pep rallies. Among the many small improvements made by the council during the course of the second semester were a new seating chart established to decrease confusion caused during assem- blies held in the auditorium, placing of waste- paper baskets where they were needed around the school, and correction of the slow- moving lunch lines in the cafeteria. With the aid of the advisers and admini- stration, the student council and its officers truly functioned as a student government.
