That certain friend whom you may never see again after graduation is so dear. How vivid will it be a few years from now? Will it be easy for you to recall all the fun you had in Sno- homish High? The annual staff works each year for the students of S.H.S. They have the seniors in mind for the most part, for the latter are leaving-leaving with many memories. At first graduation is a big event, no more school, but then the end of the year nears. The last month the days rush by. Where did they go? You wanted to trade a picture with him, and you just never got around to it. When he walks up to get his diploma, it may be the last time you will ever see himl The idea gives you a qu er feeling. Farewell Kla Ta Wa is a word o much meaning lt means the annual will be more rm portant to you in a few years for you can glance over the pictures and live four wonder ful years once again You will then realize what a great influence high school was The annual staff has a sp cial feeling toward its publication Although it is work for us it is also pleasure We hope it will also bring back wonderful memories in a way you enloy IOO Thank you BARBARA ANDERSON EDITORIAL At last the yearbook is out, and we are very glad that it is a successful one. We would like to express our thanks to the following: Miss Fowler, who has spent many hours ad- vising the staff on the production of the an- nual, Crown Studio, lMr. and Mrs. Allerdice and Betty Winstonl who worked very hard in getting the pictures printed for the girls to mount, Mr. T. E. Dobbs and Snohomish Tri- bune, Wards Bindery and Art Craft of Seattle, the students of S.H.S. who wrote the explana- tions on the pictures, Mrsr Blatt, who advised the students on the write-ups, and the hard- working iuniors and seniors on the annual staff, who have spent many hours on their assignments. The yearbook is a glimpse of all the things that we have done during the great year of 1951. The Seniors we hope years from now will look into their annuals and reminrsce about the best years of their lives in high school We in the annual staff have tried to use everyones suggestions to make the Kla Ta Wa different and better lt takes time and much patience to complete a large protect like the yearbook Throughout our work w have enloyed every moment and we are very proud to make this annual an engoyable one to all of you Thank you OLIVA BOITANO Co Editor Kla Ta Wa Co Editor Kla Ta Wa LEFT TO RIGHT BACK ROW Sharon Collins Marlene Morgan Ellen Olson Arlene Carlson June Durlrng Barbara Olson Barbara Anderson Oliva Bo tano Norma Henrrckson Lenora Bu n Miss Ruth Fowler Sharon Geithman Alice Chenuer LEFT TO RIGHT FRONT ROW Margaret 'VlcGrnnness B lerly Srroh Sally Wnson Garlen Johnson Sally lllman Arline Johnson Bettv Gemmer Maxine G mble Shirley Klokk vold Co I drtors B rr'r rr r Anderson Ollk r Port mo PICTUIL Editors Oln 1 Bolt mo P w rlx S r h MKDUHTIDL Alrce Qhenrer f rrlee Johnson Q N' I I ,, l ,,. No, this is only the FFA in one phase of farmer training. This is the farm shop where all man- ner of machine work is done. This building houses the welders, electric drills, power saws and other equipment. Maybe you have never heard of the FFA. You should have. lt is a national organization with chapters in forty-seven states, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. More than one million farm boys have been members of the FFA. In order to determine the effectiveness of an organization the results must be studied One has only to observe the records of the mem bers who have left Snohomish to realize that the FFA is an effective and worth while organ ization Many of the boys who have graduated have become agricultural and civic leaders in their communities LNOTICG the positions and offices of trust and responsibility which FFA boys attain because of the training which they have received l Perhaps the FFA motto can show more clear ly than anything else the real purpose of the FFA Although the motto consists of only four lines they reflect a spirit of sincerity which shows the true viewpoint of the FFA members lt is as fol ows Learning to Do Doing to Learn Earning to Live Living to Serve Snohomish is a farming community with a fine reputation Much of the credit for its good reputation as a farming district goes to the local FFA chapter The boys who have gone home from agriculture classes with a raft of information on better farming methods have made possible a big improvement in stand ards of living for rural families Since the year l933 when the Snohomish chapter was founded, twenty-two boys have gone to higher achievements by earning Amer- ican Farmer degrees. The American Farmer de- gree is the highest honor bestowed on an FFA member and is presented at the national con- vention. Snohomish also has many members who have attained the rating of State Farm- er. The State Farmer degree is obtained only through much hard work on the part of the applicant. Since there are only a few who ob- tain such degrees, the FFA can be iustly proud of its record. The Snohomish chapter has also been very effective and conspicuous in the local district When Snohomish enters a ludging contest oth er chapters have been known to feel fear for Snohomish is almost certain to walk away with at least one of the banners that are given The year 1950 has proved to be no exception The guclging team has brought home many banners which make a very impressive display Another important factor which makes the FFA outstanding is that the club is entirely self supporting The Snohomish chapter can be proud of the equipment which they own and also the way in which the chapter has been financially stable In the year 1950 the chapter bought a tractor and also some equip ment to go with it There IS no other school club which can boast of a record like this The Snohomish chapter can well be proud of its agriculture teachers Mr Britten and Mr Hedlund are two of the finest advisers who have ever ludged a cow They have had much to do with the outstanding record which the Snohomish chapter has made For his qualities of leadership scholarship co operation and protect work the Washing ton state Bankers Association presented an ap preciation award to Charles Jinneman and The First National Bank of Everett gave him a twenty five dollar Savings Bond FIRST PICTURE TOP ROW lVlr H dlund Adviser Dale Annns Jay Hale Dick Schu er Lelo llllalgeslnl SECOND ROW Ron Norton Glen Bingham Ed Tucker Don Malge rn Don Haase Al Jacobsen Al Poetcl otnder Ralph Brandsma THIRD ROW Floyd lVlc Kenron Al Taylor Jnn Vogel Eugene Land Toi Lore sot Loinle Htscock Lynn Allen Cecil Young FOURTH ROW Dvvluht lVlnler Bll' Cr ven Clem Bowen Glenn Goshorn Frank Richards Ron Harrlsoi FIFTH ROW Arvld Levin Bob Douglas Olan O Neal Don ulst Bl wus an h rry K ng e endall r I v rsor H res rl ur. Even those that did not attend can remember with pleasure the posters and an- nouncements advertising the affair. School just starts, then work begins for the chairmen of the senior ball. The date of the first semi-formal dance of the year seems to be here before you know it. The Candy Lane Ball produced by the senior class of 1951 took place December 1, 1950. Barbara Anderson and John Fenton were co- chairmen of this senior ball. Other chairmen were: Ron Cook, decorations, Jay Hale, lights, Norma Henrickson, publicity, Oliva Boitano, punch, Marilyn Webster, entertainment, Betty Richards, invitations, Bernice Spicer, patrons and patronesses, Gene Kuhlman, tickets, and Bob Vogel, finances. The entrance into this magic candy land was an arch of giant candy canes. The theme was further developed by a blue cloud with small candy canes suspended from it. Murals of giant candies were on two walls of the dance floor. Gingerbread men scattered around the other walls helped to make this a senior ball never to be forgotten. The entertainment, consisting of a pantomime, German band, and a magi- cian, completed a perfect evening. BAND Activity was the keynote of the Snohomish High School band this year. They marched and played in the Kla-Ha-Ya Days Parade before set'ling down to their assignments. Their first fall engagement was at the Evergreen State Fair at Monroe. Then came their performance at the Orthopedic program. They were fortu- nate enough to be able to participate in the Christmas parade in Seattle along with a num- ber of other bands. They were rated outstand- ing in appearance and were on television. The band leader, Mr. Herman Eickhoff, was award- ed a plaque of appreciation for the fine per- formance. The band played at all the home games in football and basketball this year, which includ- ed accompaniments for half-time entertain- ment, and all the pep assemblies. It also played at a football game in Anacortes and a BACK ROW: Phyllis King, Ruth Johanson, Marilyn Perry, Helen Mathews, Joan Morgan, Bonnie Hoffman, Sh.rley Lewis, Barbara Lane, Shirlee Jones, Greta Fortune, June Tucker, Linda Keaton, Oliva Boitano, Joyce Edwards, Pearl Johnson, Pauline Skjonsby, Geraldine Stevens, Marie Wicklund, Sharon Geithman, Rosemary Palella Vcrnia Gardner, Martha Williams. On March third selected members of the band took part in the festival band at the Universtiy of Washington. Among them were the clarinet quartet and the brass sextet who rated excellent and good respectively. The band was not only outstanding in its performances at games, but it also present- ed several numbers at the band and choir con- cert held in the high school auditorium on March twenty-first. There were many more events, including Snohomish County Festival in May and commencement exercises. There are about fifty members in the band this year with five in the graduating class. The latter are Betty June Richards, Jim Keaton, Gary Ferguson, Jim Snyder, and Sonna Eick- hoff. Although these seniors will not be here next fall, others will follow in their footsteps with Hail to Snohomish High. Yes, Snohomish has iust made a basket or touchdown! The graceful girls in the foreground are the song leaders. The girls were well attired this year. For the football season, they wore white pleated skirts and red sweaters. Then, as basketball season rolled around, they surprised the stu- dent body with their new bright red dresses. They placed considerable effort in their work, even off the field. Just after re-election for basketball season, they went to Mount Vernon, accompanied by Miss Jeanette Poore, to attend the yell and song leader conference held there. They had a very pleasant trip and learned new ideas to bring to S.H.S. Although they had to furnish their own transportation to most of the away-from-home games, the song leaders were very good rep- resentatives for Snohomish High School.
