Grrls turned out for sports too Howardrne Jones made the all star frrst term rn speedball x hrch ras qurtc rn lonor for our class Sports were not the only rctryrty whrch rnterested our class In the all school pl rx Abrr s Ir sh Rose Mrke krsman played the leadmg., role as Able He was the only Freshrrr rn elrerblr for Thes prrns rncl rdded another feather to our alrerdy crowded cap The next yerr as promrsrng Sophomores the class elected Brll Dugger prcsrdent Joan Hall xrcc presrdrnt Edwrna Olson secretary and Jrm Ingalls treasurer For tlrr frrst trme the Sophomore bovs had therr own lergue rn football eorched by Ted Brrtten How rrd Rarnes made the regular second team Basketball agarn w as a favorrte sport of the 49 ers not to mentron track and b rseb rll Joan Dugger and Patsy Schenaker made the frrst tcan rn grrls speedbrll whrlr mrny other sopho more errls w ere close runner ups Frnally wr were upper classmen' Our thrrd year was frlled wrth more rnd better rctrvrtres In our frrst meetrng of the vear w 1th Mrs Hodge as advrser we chose John Hall presrdent Patsv Schenaker vrce presrdent and Al Odegard secretary treasurer Also we elected Rodney Bradt charr man of prns and rrngs Carole Berentsen charrman of our annual Sadr Hawkrns Dance and Mrke Krs man charrman of the Junror Prom Our Prom whrch was held rn late Aprrl was an Under the Sea dream Never before was the new gym decorated so attractrvely It was a nrght of nrghts never to be forgotten by our class In the sports world many Junror boys took top honors In football Jrm Ingrlls was chosen on the all county frrst team and agaln on the All Nothwest team as center Howard Rarnes was chosen on the all county second team Three Junrors started on the frrst frve rn basketball whrle two others played as reserves These frve were Howard Rarnes Drck Knapp Joe Greenleaf Ray Houck and Earl Averrll Not to be outdone the track team clarmed frve Junror boys three of whom made letters The boys werent the only members of our class to make letters Seven gals turned out farthfully rn the varrous sports open to them These were Pat Schenaker Joan Dugger Pat Prrce Nathalre Kuhl man Dorothy McGumness and Melba Prrce Many from our group were promrnent members of Thesprans and durrng the year many more turned out for the varrous plays The offrcers for thrs group were all 49 ers These were Carolyn Lanz presrdent Mrke Krsman vrce presrdent and Carole Berentsen secretary treasurer Now rt last' Senrors' It was hard to belreve but there we were Feelrng the rmportance of berng the class of the hour we wrsely chose Gary Ramberg, presrdent Jrm Ingalls vrce presrdent and Rodney Bradt secretary treasurer Advrsed by Ruth Fowler and John Mrles we chose Howardrne Jones Senror Ball charrman but be cause we had an unexpected vacatron durrng the bad weather season the dance had to be cancelled On the football team thrs year many Senrors helped pull Snohomrsh to the top of the League Jrm Ingalls rnd Howard Rarnes won top honors rn thrs sport Both were on the All County frrst team the All Northwest frrst team and the All State team At the banquet held at the end of the season Howard was chosen captarn and Jrm was awarded the rnsprratronal trophy and named co w rnner of the best blocker trophy In basketball many Senrors helped the team through rts many vrctorres At the close of the season Howard Rrrnes was named on the All Northwest frrst team w hrle Ray Houck and Drck Knapp m rde thr second t am Many Senror lettermen came back for therr last year rn tr rck rnd baseball Among, them rn track were Ed Odegard Ray Houck Bob Kelley Brll Dugger Glen Olels and Carey Grsper rn baseball Grry Ramberf. SNOHOMISH 12 - SEDRO VVOOLLEY 0-The Panthers upset the dopl c Q once again this year. The Panthers went into the game heavy favorites huge Bulldog line. The Panther's only chance to score in the first perio blocked kick on the five-yard line. Four line plays failed to score. In t the one-yard line where Ramberg bucked it ov minutes remaining, once again Mt. Vernon began to roll. MOOl'6S ran the and Vfhite 15 yard line, and a few plays later they scored on a screer Tl kick was a few inches wide and the game ended in a tie. SNOIIOMISH 6 - MT. VERNON 6-The old Mt Vernon jinx hung ov d Fans were pzeclictine an upset in this one with the championship it in high Hear and rolled over the Seahawks 31-7. They scored twice once in every other quaiter, while Anacortes made their lone tally late in berg and Howaid Raines each tallied twice for the Panthers with Knapp big scorer for Anacortes 'was stopped cold by the Red and White except third quarter. SNOHOMISH 52 - MARYSVILLE 0-It was sweet revenge for Stan Bates as his Panther eleven ran roughshod over the Marysville Tomahawks who the previous year had handed Snohomish its only setback. When the smoke cleared from the battle field. it showed Snohomish 52, Malysville 0. Raines paced the Panthers with three touchdowns while Knapp, Davis, Ramberg, Odegard, and Courtney all tallied once. Bob Larsen kicked four conversions to round out the scoring. The Tomahawks showed sparks of offense but their defense crumbled in front of the eager Panthers. SNOHUMIISH 14 - ARLINGTON 0-The 1948 football season was finished off in a blaze of glory, or you might say in a sea of mud. The Panthers proved that they were champions true blue as they out- mudded the Arlington Eagles on the latter's gridiron 14-0, Raines gave Snohomish its first tally on an off-tackle slant from the midfield stripe early in the first quarter. Neither team could threaten until the fourth quarter when the Red and White eleven marched 60 yards with Ramberg bucking it over from 5 yards out. Gary tallied both extra points with straight bucks. When the final gun sounded, the whole team converged on Coach Stan Bates and paid tribute to him by lifting him to their shoulders and parading from the mud covered field amid victory shouts and yells from the fans. The Panthers won their Tournament and were about to play their second when little Joey scorer of the team, was struck with appendicitis. The Edmonds Tigers were the next victims on the Panther list, and came the powerful Sedro-Vtloolley Cubs who were the team to beat in the Panthers slaughtered them 47 to 30. Thus Snohomish tied Northwest League Title. The Panthers went into the District Tournament at Everett at the west League and drew Bellingham in the first game. They showed their feating the Red Raiders 56-39 and moving into the second round of play who had defeated Sedro-Woolley in the first round. Without the aid of they slapl-ed the Eagles 49-35 and moved into the finals against Everett. Everett is a night that is wished to be forgotten. Howard Raines was named All-District forward for the second consecutive year, while Dick Knapp and Ray Houck were named on the second team, Besides winning a trophy for the Northwest League Champion- ship and placing second in the District Tournament, the team received the Merryfield Good Sportsman- ship Trophy for having the best sportsmanship in the District Tournament. Coach Everett Woodward's second team played outstanding ball all season and tied with Sedro-Wool- ley for the championship for the Northwest League second teams.
