Superintendent R. LAVERNE MARCUM S uperintendenfs Message The events of the past year-especially that of the efforts to explore and eventually master outer space-should impress rather forcibly in the .minds of high school students the im- portance of a good education in the years ahead. The oppor- tunities and challenges are at your doorsteps. I appreciate my association with the students of Snake River High. I shall always cherish these fond and enjoyable memories.

'Si---v Princzjvalk Message Ihc place ot t'tllll'illlUIl in a llt'IIl0CI'illll' got'- ernment is one of highest importance. Com- petcntly educated citizens increase the produc- tive knowledge of the nation and increases its l'iiinin-ial earnings. 'I'ht-sv in turn give us a higher and a more enlightened way ol life. lfdur-ation is tor all people in the nation. No one Slllllllll lie IlPQ1l0l'lt'tl. We must then gear our program to that end. Well rounded eurrivuluni should he deviseil to reach that olmjevtiye. We sometimes feel that education is only the st'hool's responsihility and as a result the coinplete training of the individual is some- times left to the schools. Education is the responsihility of parents. church. and the school. Education in the finer hahits and ideals which tt re so important to school success are the primary responsihility of parents. The parents receive help from school and church in accomplishing this aim: ideals and proper habits are most important. hecause all knowl- edge gained depends upon these things for its proper application. If proper habits are not formed then the recipient of knowledge he- comes a traitor to democratic life hy heing a deterrent to law and order. Yet we must do all we can to provide a means hy which he can become useful in society. Parents, teachers, and church people must continually stress that education is an oppor- tunity and privilege and not a requirement pushed upon them hy law. If we are compe- tent citizens, students must want to learn, must want to do right, and must realize that they owe the hest in them to the goal of hettering mankind. This lifting of mankind in his spiritual. physical, and moral life is an inspir- ing task. The reward for individual achieve- ment is the feeling of joy in his heart at the advancement toward a well-rounded life for all.
