F H A HISTORY The members of the Vocatwnal Home Economrcs Department of Smoot orgamzed a Future Homemakers of America Chapter xn September 1948 Our advxsor was Mrs Loulse Lovell The followmg offxcers were elected for the current year President Norma Jean Hobbs Vlce Presldent Frances Sheppard Secretary Josephme Bennett Treasurer Mary Lou Mlller Reporter Mary V1rg1ma Kung Song Leader Norma Jean Lackey Parhamentargan lviagalene Schoolcraft Chapter Mother Mrs W D Hobbs There were forty sxx members enrolled at our flrst meetmg but we lost two by the end of the school term Our regular meetmgs were held on Wednesday afternoons from l 30 to 2 30 p m For entertamment members gave plays and played games Re freshments were served by appomted commxttees Among the plays gwen was the Three Timer and the second class gave Kady Rosa A Bake Sale was held November 8th to provide our chapter w1th funds to buy a few necessary items Our Chapter sent a delegatnon to the regional meeting of the Southern West Vxrgmxa Future Homemakers We also adopted a Home Economics Class xn Germany Z6 ' ll ' Vl ' Historian . . . . . . HISTORY OF THE F F A The flrst day of school September 7 1948 found forty s1x members enrolled m the Vocational Agricultural Class here at Smoot The class xmmedlately began plans to organize a Future Farmers Chapter Wlth a little and from the various other F F A Chapters al ready orgamzed 1n Greenbrner County we were ready to organxze and elect ofhcers by the last of September On November 18 1948 the Ronceverte Chapter of F F A came to Smoot to lnltlate us as Green Hands mto the Future Farmers of Amerlca It was a very good ex per1ence for all however It hurt the d1gn1ty of a few boys on the lower end ? 'P 'P We were then off1c1a1F F A members wrth a new set of offlcers The chapter has been respons1ble for varlous jobs undertaken and completed here on the schoolground Our flrst Job was to bulld a board walk from the mam bulldmg to our Vocatlonal Agrxculture class room down m Draft Hollow that 15 a place about 100 feet from the school bulldmg In November we helped the County Board of Educa tlon pour concrete for our shop floor We are now laboring on a fence bulldmg job I thmk 'P '7 'P 'P 'P Our chapter has and is sponsormg a number of outslde ac twxtles to ralse money for our chapter treasury Our f1rst undertaking was a shootmg match and we made S23 OO On February 4 1949 w sponsored a group of entertamers from stat1on WRON and made S13 75 We made S25 00 cuttmg brush but we have already donated xt to the Hot Lunch Program Z7 . 1 1 1 '- . . . , . . a I i . : . . .
