CLASS HIST OR Y In the Fall of 1945 thxrty seven green Freshmen set their saxls to Journey to the land of knowledge w1th the ard of Mrs Bentzel our class sponsor For our helpers we chose Charles Bland for Presl dent and Emma Hobbs as Secretary and Treasurer By the Sprmg of 1946 several thought the task too great and de c1ded to follow the path of last reslstance They were Laura Lee Brayant Howard Osborne Charles and Thomas Wendell Rosetta Cohenour Emma Hobbs V1rg1n1a Jones Lmden Treadway and Shelton Buzzard who flew away Jo Ann Stanlrff declded Crxchton could satrsfy her lofty ambltlons better than Smoot By the Fall of 1946 we advanced a stage and were consrdered silly We had as our Presldent Bud Sharpe Secretary and Treasurer Phyllis Perkms There were only twenty s1x at the begmnmg of the school term and Mrs Bentzel was stxll strugglmg with us But th1s great decrease m number drdn t prevent our placmg the candidate of our class Betty Cohenour as Queen of Smoot I-hgh We also gave a Negro Mm strel that was a big h1t Thus year four more students left us They were Anna Holllday Phylhs Perkms Ross Zlckafoose and Bully Geaorge turnmg to therr posts with Mr Perkms as our sponsor This year the Juniors and Semors jomed together and gave a soc1a1 Even after sarlmg th1s long Jack Hundley Lacy Bryant Margaret Patterson and Alma Wxllzams deserted us We are now nearxng the end of our journey wlth only twenty three dxgnnfxed Semors under Mr Perkins supervision Thls number decreases because Harold Butler went to Ole Vxrgmny and A1kenK1ng dec1ded to sa1l for Uncle Sam leavmg only twenty one to steer the boat home To ald us over the bumps we chose Pres1dent Raymond Anderson and Secretary Josephme Bennett The class gave the play Everybody s Crazy Now The play was enj oyed by those who attended It when xt was presented at the Smoot Audxtorzum and later at Frankford A profrt of 5150 00 was gamed from thns play Also a check on the class averages determmed that Lee Thompson that emment short story wrxter should make the valedxctory address for our class whxle shy bashful Josephine Bennett was fated to offer the salutatory address The time has arrwed since our trlp to Washmgton D C has been completed and our dxplomas issued that we must sa1l our own shlps 7 1947 rolls around to find only twenty-five jolly Juniors re- ' ll V

THE CLASS PROPHECY 1948-1949 As I went to sleep last mght my mind was troubled and in a weary state over a certam dlffxcult problem that had fallen my fate had been selected prophet of my graduatmg class of Smoot I-hgh and Alas I could not prophesy Twas xn the mlddle of the mght that I was awaken ed from my sweet repose by a strange rustlmg at the foot of my bed VICWIDQ the locality of the d1sturbance I was astomshed to perceive a man m whxte observmg me wxth the keenest regard Frrghtened out of my w1ts, I dare say I was Surely I would have fled had not thrs seemxngly whrte phantom sand in a volce so kmd and calm Are you the student who has been selected as the prophet for the 1949 Graduatmg Class of Smoot I-hgh? If you be he God has sent me to ass1st you m makmg that prophecy You see I am Mr Future God s maker of human destunes My curloslty overcoming my fear I answered Unfortunately I am that person Let not your mind be troubled was the intruder s reply w1ll 1mmed1ately relleve you of your apparent distress Please do not mterrupt Fxrst of all Josephme Bennett will become the head nurse of Charleston General Hosp1tal and after the usual custom she wall unite in marrlage with the head doctor and lwe happily ever after Max Wells will become a great singer of nation w1de fame Has melodxous voice w11l drwe Bang Crosby out of busmess and all the women mad from Jealousy and love For once thzs dear boy w11l retreat wxthout a brave stand when he observes a group of lady adm1rers so close at hand So sad So sad The future of Martha Martm w1ll be somewhat snmxlar to that of Max for she w11l teach muslc to unwantmg ears In turn she will produce smgers that have no peers Now Raymond Anderson will dlscover a sure cure headache pow der and recewe a fortune for h1s strenuous labors With his fortune will build a beautiful castle for his fa1r maiden wife Jane It IS an astomshing thmg to say but at last I was convmced that thxs man really existed and meant no harm and so I spake It IS not Jane disagreed I on the matter just rnent1oned but Norma Stop said the man m white I am makmg this prophecy Be sides such outbursts of knowledge might over work your mind I conceded his pomt of rebuke and he continued Betty Cohenour the once crowned Queen of Smoot High will marry a roving kmg and lwe m splendor and riches throughout her life Charles Neal Bland Buck to most that women shy boy will never unite In holy matrumony but wlll be noted as an author of romantic tales Mae Coughlm wxll be a successful chtropractor and rub men s necks To keep in practxce she w11l choose one of her favorite patients as her mate Good fortune wxll follow the footsteps of Marjorie Coughhn the cousin of Mae for she will d1scover gold xn her own back yard It is nevitable that she w1ll marry her frnendly nexghbor and hve in ease The next on my list IS Roy Rogers No that IS wrong It IS Herman Rogers instead That man whom I so wrongly confused IS a well known actor of Western movue fame The two are dzfferent as you may see but also snmllar ln some ways to be For Herman IS to wm a mxlllon dollar ranch 1n the Dakota lands 8 . .
