The building was divided into academic and activity areas 4 which was a different idea that took getting used to because of the familiarity of the former system which had the commons in the middle of the four academic areas. The new dining hall was a positive addition to the school giving an area for the students to gather together during the school day, and a new area for the extra-curricular activities like dances and service projects. The new addition also had a positive affect on the Characteristics of Smoky Hill. Students began to take more pride in their building and in being called Buffalos. Enthusiasm ran high throughout the year in supporting school functions as students became aware of the fact that within the growing state and community, Smoky Hill was part of it all, and that we were Building Character. Football fans, Doug Baloun, Fred Farris, Kevin Patterson, Greg Fraikor, Dave Sward, Rob Haynes, Jeff Cole, and Pat Patten watch Smoky Hill beat Fairview. 8 Prologue
