After much discussion blue and gray were chosen as our class colors, and after what seemed an eternity these colors could be seen throughout the school in the form of our sweat- ers, each displaying to good advantage our emblem, a four-leaf clover. Looking ahead to the future, we began raising money for our Senior trip by sponsoring candy and bake sales. To satisfy our social craving two parties were held, one at the school and one a skating party. Again our class was well represented in all activities and phases of school life, Thus our days as underclassmen came to a close and we eagerly awaited our Junior year when we would return as upperclassmen. Then as ---- J UNIORS Turning our clocks ahead once more, we see most of the same familiar faces, but this time with the dignity of upperclassmen. Under the guidance of our advisors, Mrs. Murray and Mr. Amstutz, the following officers were elected: President - Roger Ramseyer Vice-President Gene Kaufman Secretary - - Maxine Sheets Treasurer - - Bonnie Wagers Student Council Phyllis Hochstetler Jack Snoddy Social Chairmen - Rowena Garman Ronny Singer Sergeant at Arms ------- John Schrock With painstaking care we selected our class rings and after much waiting the rings ar- rived. Now the flash of gold could be seen on nearly every J unior's finger. Even as Juniors a good number of our boys proved valuable on the varsity basketball team and on the baseball team. From our class also came the varsity cheerleaders to spur them on to victory. After much hard work by the directer, Mrs. Ramseyer, and the cast the class play, Home Sweet Homiciden was given on April 2. Here we proved that we could be actors in addition to our other accomplishments. Our Junior year was climaxed by the Junior-Senior banquet which was simply Out of this World. Even though our treasury was sadly depleted after this venture, it was greatly enjoyed by all, As this year drew to a close we realized that we had but one more year in dear old Smith- ville High and we resolved to make the most of it when we returned as Seniors the next fall. And finally as - - SENIORS As we turn our clocks ahead for the last time we see the same familiar faces, but some- thing new has been added-the pride and respect that goes along with being a Senior. With the help and guidance of our advisors, Mrs. Murray and Mr. Clark, we set out to make this, our last year, an outstanding one. 20

Class Histor Let us turn back the clock of time into the deep dark past to see how the mighty class of '55 has matured during its four glorious years in the halls of learning of Smithville High. First as - - FRESHMEN Here we see dimly a crowd of awkward, bashful freshmen entering the doors of Smith- ville High on the first day of school, 1951. Upon closer inspection, we recognize several faces and our .memories of our Freshman year come sharply into focus. The first several weeks were spent in getting acquainted with our new classmates, most of which came from Madisonburg. We also learned to know our new advisor, Mrs. Murray, better. Our first item of business was to elect our officers which would lead us through the coming year. These competent leaders were chosen: President ------ Roger Ramseyer Vice-President Maxine Sheets Secretary - - Marion Falb Treasurer - - Jim Musser Student Council Bonnie Wagers Gene Kauffman With these leaders behind us We set out to make our mark in history. But not before the Sophomores made their mark on us by initiating us thoroughly in November. We soon recovered from these horrors and settled down to business vowing that next year we would .more than get even for what was done to us. In December we enjoyed ourselves at a skating party held at Madisonburg. We did indeed make an excellent start on our mark in history, Six of our boys participated both in basketball and baseball. The reserve cheerleaders were chosen from our class. In ad- dition many class members were active in music and speech activities, making our first year in high school a very enjoyable and profitable one. Next as - - - SOPHOMORES As we set our clock of time ahead one year and adjust our memories to the Sophomore year We see many new faces. Ah yes, they are our new classmates from Marshallville, whom we soon learned to know quite well. Because of our increased size, two home rooms and two advisors were needed to keep us under control. In addition to Mrs. Murray, we had a new advisor, Mr. Amstutz. From the 58 members of our class these capable officers were chosen: President - Vice-President Secretary - Treasurer - Student Council Social Chairmen Sergeant at Arms Roger Ramseyer Richard Snyder Maxine Sheets Betty McCay Martha Hutchison Ronnie Singer Bonnie Wagers Gene Kauffman - Nathan Yoho In the early months of school the election for student council president was held. After a spirited campaign, the Senior candidate, Jack Snoddy, was elected. Again we used our acting talent when we presented our Senior class play, Meet Me in St. Louis on December 2. With Mrs. Murray directing, it was a success in spite of disagreeable weather on the night of the performance. In addition to selling concessions at the basketball games we had two big money-making projects which fattened up our treasury considerably. The class co-operated splendidly when we fed the Akron Milk Producers Association on January 22 and the NEOSBA on March 21. We had a very unusual class for over one half of the boys took part in some sport. We know they enjoyed this very much and would give anything to be back with that fighting spirit next year. The highlight of our high school career was realized on April 27 when we left for Wash- ington. We were thrilled indeed to be the first class in Smithville's history to be given time off from school for the class trip. 49 Seniors along with Mrs. Murray and Mr. Kasapis arrived in Washington, D. C., where We enjoyed the time of our lives and one that we shall never for- get. It was then that we realized that all our working, scrimping, and saving had not been in vain. Our trip completed we arrived back in Smithville on May 2 much wiser and sleepier. On May 7 the Junior class invited us to a very enjoyable banquet at Smithville Inn, after which we resorted to our own devices to provide entertainment for the rest of the night and probably longer. On May 13 we had our last class party in the form of a chicken roast at the Smithville Community Park, Our Baccalaureate service was held on May 22 and on May 26 Commencement exercises ended our school life in Smithville High. We tried our best to accomplish our aims While in high school but whether we did or not will be decided by those we leave behind.
