CLASS HISTORY On September 5, 1945, the nfty pupils of the class of 1948 entered the doors of Smithville High School as Freshmen. Under the leadership of Miss George, now Mrs. Condry, we elected the following as officers: President ............................ Howard Wainio Student Council ...... . ...... Norma Conrad Vice President ...... .... O rris Basinger Eugene Smith Sec'y-Treas. ............................ Kathryn Beck Reporter ............................ . .... Joan Hostetler ln October the Sophomores gave us a party which we returned in March. Marvin Brueck, Orris Basinger, Ross Mosier, and Delbert Rock represented us in athletics. Many others were in music and other activities. After three months of vacation we began our Sophomore year at S. H. S. Forty-two pupils were enrolled, with Mrs. Murray as our sponsor. We chose scarlet and white as our class colors and ordered our sweaters. The same boys were on the athletic squads. In October we revived the tradition of Freshman initiation when we gave them a party. Later we had a hayride and weiner roast at Orr Park. The Freshmen gave us a party in May. Joann Hostetler After spending the summer in various ways, the thirty-seven students still remaining in the class of '48 re-entered the halls of learning as Juniors. Mr. Tschantz was our sponsor, with the following officers: President ................... .. ........... Marvin Brueck Student Council ............ Juanita Limbacher See'y-Treas. ............ ..... ............ J e an Snyder Eugene Smith Sergeant-at-Arms ........ Juanita Limbacher Reporter ..........................,..... Donna Walton Our class sweaters, scarlet with white emblems, arrived in the fall. Our class rings arrived in April. The class play, The Skeleton Walks, was presented on April 15. Mrs. Fair directed the cast of Norma Conrad, Kathryn Beck, Dorothy McAnaney, Juanita Limbacher, Lillian Walters, Vivian Singer, Orris Basinger, Marvin Brueck, Eugene Smith, and Dwight Harrison. The same boys who had been representing us in athletics did so for the third year. We held the annual Junior-Senior Banquet on May 1, 1947, at the Smithville lnn. At last September 2, 1947 arrived and we were Seniors. Thirty-five boys and girls remained for Mr. Tschantz to sponsor. We got down to work to raise money for our -depleted treasury and elected the following as our last officers: President ................. ..... O rris Basinger Student Council ....... ....... D olores Marthey Sergeant-at-Arms ............ Vincent Besancon Social Chairmen ..... ........ G erald Miller Joann Hostetler VVe sold Christmas cards and refreshments at basketball games to raise money for our trip to Washington, D. C. On November 21, we gave our class party, Bachelor's Wife , with Mrs. Murray as director. The cast consisted of Eugene Smith, Marvin Brueck, Orris Basinger, Lillian Walters, Juanita Limbacher, Dorothy McAnaney, Ross Mosier, Ruth Haley, and Norma Conrad. Orris Basinger, Ross Mosier, and Delbert Rock were still in athletics. Many other students participated in other extra-curricular activities. Our last days at S.H.S. were busy ones. We gave our Senior Assembly on May 19. Rev. Grisso delivered the Baccalaureate sermon. On May 25, at 8:00 P.M. the class of 1948 graduated. Mr. Lewis C. Turner, M.A. delivered the graduation address. On May 26, we left for Washington, returning on the 30th, for our new lives as adults. -By Patricia Blosser Nineteen
