Text from Pages 1 - 80 of the 1975 volume:

To the Student Body I take this opportunity to congratulate the student body, school officials, sports fans, teams, faculty, board of education and the entire community on one of the best school years I have ever experienced. Only last week I learned that one of the referees of the district tournament, the first ever held in Smithville, wrote the State Athletic Association commending the teams, school, fans, and community on the best tournament in which he had ever worked. This makes me real proud of all of you. In my short two years here 1 have witnessed more togetherness than any place I have ever taught. So keep up the good work for an even better school and community. Tom Barker Superintendent 3 Mr. Jim Glenn Engl ish Speech Root in Ronnie Gets with it. And last, but certainly not least, Judy Owens wills her pet pig to the Junior class. It'll fit right in. Class Will As I walked behind the chutes, I saw Larry Lowman. He’s still working at Grannis and is still after those Grannis girls. That is who he was talking to at that time. He had been begging any of them to marry him for the last five years. Jerry Balke was there too. He now owns a large casino in Las Vegas but believe it or not, he’s still driving the same old De- mon. Why? Because everytime he thinks he can get another one, the cops come along and raid his place. He's probably having a hard time getting his bills paid. He's been raided four times in the last five months. What on earth does he have in that casino to cause them to keep raiding it? Before the main events started, someone went up and gave a big long speech. I thought I recognized the voice but I wasn't sure about it. I looked at her real hard, but I still didn't know who it was. I asked someone who it was, and they said it was Pat Parnell. Well, why was she giving a speech? She is now the governor of Idaho. Do you remember Elroy Williams? How quiet he was? Well, he was there and he sure has changed. He has gotten a job in an auction barn somewhere in Texas. He is now one of the best auctioneers in the land. It took him a while to get used to talk- ing a littler louder than usual though. There for a while he constantly had a sore throat. I also saw Virgil Bohanon, dressed as nice as ever. I wonder where got all those clothes. I found out that when he got mar- ried, his wife owned a large boutique in Tulsa; therefore as well as clothing him, she supports him! I asked someone where Junior Pollard was. They said he was in New York posing for some pictures. The pictures were for an advertisement in one of the popular magazines for a muscle building course. Seems as though he had become the new Charles Atlas. I walked down by the concession stand and saw Helen Williams working in it. She had a boy in FFA and that’s how she got stuck working. She had been married twice in the last fifteen years, but she still had the same last name. I bet it's hard to find someone to marry with the same last name as yours every time. But then, if they’re good-looking, who cares? As I left the concession stand, I met up with Randy Smith. It was rather hard to recognize him. He had quit wearing his west- ern clothes and was now wearing the latest fashions, which consisted of bell bottom pants, hippy boots, and long hair. The change was becoming to him. He now had the girls after him everytime he turned around. Another shocking thing about him was that he had quit his drinking and other bad habits. As I was looking around, I saw Renee Broderson who has now been married to the same man for five years. They have five kids; two of them are Renee’s and three of them are her husband's! Terry Youngblood had been planning on being there that night, but a nurse called him back to the hospital in Mena. An emergency had come up. He had to go back and perform an emergency brain transplant. He had only one problem in this profession; everytime a patient would come in to see him, his face would turn red. I couldn't find Wilma Wilson at the rodeo. I heard that she had gotten seasick from walking across the swinging bridge. Imagine that, after all the things she has been through. She had never married; she thought it was more fun to play the field. We sure missed Larry Going who was unable to come because he had an important ball game at Madison Square Garden. You ask what he would do at a place like that and at a ball game? Well, believe it or not, ol’ Larry joined the New York Knicks. He’s their star player because of his quick hands. After a while I found Valerie Fairless back behind the chutes talking to all of the cowboys. She claimed that she was inter- viewing them for the Field and Stream magazine that she now works for. She hasn’t ever found anyone to marry, 90 she figured if she started working for a magazine, she would get to travel around quite a bit and try to hook someone! I didn't have to ask about Tommy Lee. I had already heard all about him, as had everyone else in the country. He had been last month’s pin-up boy for the Play-Girl magazine. I heard he made a lot of money from that picture. Wonder what he did with all of it? The only good thing about this; it cured his shyness (believe it or not) with the girls. You would never guess who was now a judge at the rodeo. Billy Jones. Yes, Buddy was there. After I talked to him for a while, I found out that he had been in the Army and was now working at a computer dating service. He had the job of call- ing up the girls to tell them who their dates were. (Can you imagine him doing that when everyone but himself got his dates for him during high school!) David Finley was there. For once he was sober. Now that was a shock right there. He had worked real hard at something the last five years, no one knew exactly what he had been doing though, and had bought the Wagon Wheel. Yes, ol’ David was the new proprietor of the Wheel. He had a few problems with his staff though. He ACCIDENTLY got drunk one night, and his bouncer threw him out. But, other than that, he was the same ol' David. Cheryl Combs had joined the Army and had become a five star general. They got tired of her bossing everyone around and retired her at the ripe old age of 27. She was sitting up there with her husband. She had married her Korean pen pal. There was no way you could miss her sitting up there in full uniform. Last, but certainly not least, we come to Cooper Brown, the ambitious Senior sponsor, who is endeavoring to dislodge Mr. Capehart from the perenial Senior Sponsorship. In his efforts to do this we would like to offer a few suggestions—No. 1-Go back to college and become an English major. No. 2-Handle all the advance publicity for the rodeo. Finally, No. 3-Be- come bald. This has been a look at the 1975 graduating class as we picture them 10 years from now. Sometimes I wonder just how much of this prophecy will come true. 15 Senior Class Prophecy The date is May 3, 1985. I have traveled a long way, but I have finally arrived at Smithville just in time for the rodeo. But as I look around, I realize that a few changes have taken place. Smithville has a new Vo-Ag teacher now. He is also the announcer of the rodeo. Yes, Jerry Huff has come a long way since he was a senior in high school. It seems as though all the Vo-Ag boys like him as a teacher. I have only one question about this. What all does he teach in this class of his? And another thing, since he has become the Vo-Ag teacher, girls have been allowed in the class. I'm also told Mr. Huff likes to coon hunt on the side. I wonder if he has any luck? I also found out that Johnny Stoeckl had bought a ranch full of Charloais cattle. But after a while he decided that he wasn't doing to well at that so he went into producing rodeos with his cattle. He is producing this rodeo. It seems as though he is doing pretty well at it. As I look down, surveying the crowd, I see one person who really stands out. Of course, my curiosity gets the best of me. I say good-by to Mr. Huff and to everyone else, and go to see who this man is. He’s dressed in fancy clothes, a big Stetson hat, shiny cowboy boots and has a big dollar cigar in his mouth. As I go closer I finally recognize him, Of course! He's one of the graduating class that made a little money. Randy Collins. Yes, that was him. He made his fortune by sell- ing mouse traps door to door. Of course, he wasn't in this industry alone. Oh no! He had a partner in this. But she couldn't make it to the rodeo this year. She was at a state convention. Rhonda Dixon was his partner. She would go ahead of him and sell pet mice door to door. Of course they were in cages that were made of inferior material. They were designed to come apart. Naturally when the mice were loose in the house then Randy would come along and sell the house traps to them. Walking along, I met up with Richard Pollard. He was still the same. He was in the middle of a big group of girls. When I finally got to talk to him, I asked if he had ever gotten married. He had and I asked where his wife was. He pointed up the bleachers, grabbed a girl by the arm and took off. Well, I glanced up, and it wasn't hard to find her. She was the one with four kids, two black eyes and a numerous amount of bruises. Poor girl. What would you say if I told you Mark Kelley was there? Yep! He finally got married. Somehow in the deal he had to become a preacher. But do you think this changed old Mark any? Nope, he's still the same old guy. When he wants to two- time his wife, the girl has to come after him, otherwise he is stuck at home! The only problem is, his wife can tell when he has been running around on her. He comes in without his glasses on 'cause somehow he manages to leave them some- where and they get run over. There's ol' Winona! Looks like she has come to enjoy the finer things of life. But a few things about her haven't changed. She still doesn't talk much and she still rides in a Mustang, driven by her chauffeur, Peaches. No one really understands this, but everyone thinks it has something to do with her high school days. Looking farther on down the bleachers, I see Felecia Rowell. Or she used to be Felecia Rowell, now it looks like Felecia Brown. Yes, here comes Mitchell walking up with five little boys tagging along after him. Felecia is trying to watch the rodeo but it's kind of hard to do that and try to keep up with all of those kids, too. Mitchell is a physical edu- cation teacher at Smithville. At this rate, he'll have his own basketball team pretty soon. Johnny Phillips has settled down now, much to my surprise, here in Smithville. He's still working in the same ol chicken house. Would you believe that he hasn't even got his car out of the shop yet? Everytime he thinks he has got enough money to get it out, some emergency comes up and there he goes again. Guess who else was there? Would you believe Steve Pollard? He is now driving a stock car up at the big track at Mena. Would you believe that he hasn't had a wreck in a whole month? I hope that one of these days he’ll give up on whatsher name and try to make something of himself. Sandra Brock was in for the week-end. She was setting up on the bleachers looking like a regular high-class business woman. She told me she had moved to Oklahoma City and was working in a huge office building as the company president's secretary. Her boss was in the hospital then, though. When I asked why, she said that he was exhausted. Everyday he would chase her around the desk, and, of course, she would out run him. It seems as though he was getting a little worn out, doing all of that running. Mike Kelley and Gaylen Gwaltney were both there. It seems as though they have become wrestlers. Thank goodness, they are working as a team this time. They seemed proud of themselves that night. No wonder! They had just won the title of Championship Heavy-Weight wrestlers in the Nation. This is a big change from the way they were in high school. I looked over the top stand and saw Judy Owens and Sandra Lowrie. Still single? Yeah, they always got too busy and forgot to call their dates to let them know where to pick them up at. 'Cause you never could tell whose house they would be at next! Of course they remember all those good times they had when they went off to sell rodeo tickets. Makes you wonder who all they met on those little trips! They had managed to get the Prison Band in to play for the rodeo this year. You wouldn't guess who was up there just playing his little heart out. Yes, the sweet, innocent Brian Bailey was up there. He had gone out to Oregon to make his fortune working in an orchard and had gotten into trouble over some little trivial thing. They didn't want him so they sent him back down here to McAlester. 16 Seventh Grade Bailey, James Beggs, Linda Benn, Ladino Brock, John Carter, Tammy Chitwood, Susan Cunningham, Barry Denton, Sh£rri Donica, David Fairless, Clifford Fairless, Floyd Fowler, Velaria Grant, Jeffrey Jacobs, Sherry Jefferson, David Kelly, Leah Ludlow, Marvin Murray, Timmy Nichols, Tony Owens, Phillis Phillips, Mona Phillips, Ricky Phillips, Roxie Smith, Perry Smith, Ricky Vaught, Denise Watson, Doris Williams, Suzanne Wilson, Teresa Worden, Jimmie 18 Eighth Grade Anderson, Mark Ashby, Ben Balke, Vicki Beggs, Roger Blaylock, Danile Bohanon, Janice Brown, Kevin Charlton, Justin Cline, Carolyn Green, Rachel Gwaltney, Perry Hensley, Rita Hensley, Ruth Hopper, Keith Hudson, Annette Jacobs, Brenda Jacobs, Jerry Land, Gerald Mason, Sandra Nichols, Odell Phillips, Dale Pollard, Gary Pollard, Shirley Romine, Cindy Stoeckl, Theresa Sullivan, LaDonna Vaught, Dennis Windle, Penny Blake, Charlotte Monks, Theresa 19 Freshmen Anderson, Lana Bailey, Aaron Batchelor, Ricky Blaylock, Randall Bond, Earnest Boyd, Stella Branson, Sherri Bruce, Chris Burge, Nicky Burge, Norman Bush, Robert Cline, Sandra Cunningham, Greg Dunigan, Phillis Fairless, Francis Fairless, Glenda Fowler, Mark Freeman, Terry Gates, Bobby Going, Karen Grant Cheryl Green, Michael Hensley, Dennis Jones, Page Jones, Wanda Lawrence, Vivian Lowrie, Bradley Ludlow, Eula Mason, Doyle McCauley, Jay 20 Moore, Sharee Murray, Lloyd Phillips, Darrell Phillips, Terry Phillips, Tommy Pollard, Johnny Samuels, Charles Smith, Niles Smith, Stephen Smith, Tammy Talley, Jeanne Toon, Phyllis Toon, Sheila Walker, Diane Watson, Virginia Sophomores Bailey, Marty Blaylock, Rex Branson, Cindy Branson, Jim Broderson, Regina Charlton, Tammy Denton, Kathy Dixion, DeWayne Fairless, Wayne Glenn, Vada 21 Freeman, Stewart Green, Christine Harjo, Lydia Hensley, Liz Hughes, Larry Johnson, David Johnson, Lyndon Johnson, Peggy Kelly, Ruth Lancaster, Randy Lowman, Jacqueline Moore, Sandra Murray, Faye Murray, Glenda Owens, Leon Roberts, Joe Romine, Patricia Rowell, Buddy Samuel, Donald Smith, Irene Allen, Marilyn Anderson, Linda Batchelor, Barbara Branson, Desiree Bush, Mike Juniors 22 Memories Cline, Patsy Donica, Robin Fairless, Marion Fairless, Tiny Jacobs, James Jacobs, Wanda Johnson, Elaine Johnson, Willard Jones, Kathy Lancaster, Tammy Ludlow, Austin Ludlow, Elvis Martin, Nancy Mason, Ricky Monks, Barbara Moore, Karen Owens, Robin Phillips, Gail Pollard, Eugene Pollard, Sherry Porter, Ricky Robertson, Theresa Smith, Lajuan Smith, Sharon Stinson, Mike Toon, Wanda Williams, Geovonna Young, Regina Cunningham, Pam Brown, Mitchell 23 Left to Right Henry Dixon Rodrick Green Delbert Parnell Senior Class Officers: President: Mark Kelley, Vice-President: Brian Bailey Secretary: Mitchell Brown, Representative: Richard Pollard Junior Class Officers: President: Kathy Jones, Vice-President: Gina Young Secretary .
