It's a chance I've yet to take, It's all the talent I have yet to use Tomorrow is a dream that leads me onward. Always just a step ahead of me It's the joy I've yet to know. The love I've yet to show, For it's the person I have yet to be Author Unknown Class Motto To the past we hold memories. For the present we live To the future we seek our dreams. Klinger Advisor Comments on Senior Class A Senior class advisor's remarks might well be titled “The Agony and the Ecstasy . As advisor for the class of '83, I have felt both. I have known: Laughter in the enjoyment of being with some of the finest students I have ever known; Elation when our financial goals were met through kit sales, concession stands, car washes, bake sales, sausage and cheese sales and sales of sweatshirts; Ordeal of dozens of cash transmittal forms preceded by collecting and counting of money, the careful ac- counting for all expenditures, and the organization nec- essary for the responsibilities that had to be assumed in order to accomplish our goals; Pride on prom night when I looked out on Caesar's Palace , a beautiful fulfillment of the dreams of a super chairman and hardworking Prom Committee; Association with class officers and class members who are courteous, helpful, and full of the vitality which youth enjoy the most; Recognition given for the myriad talents of the Senior class in the local, state, and national levels in varied scho- lastic and extra-curricular activities; Distinction which has been brought to Smithsburg High School by our many individual students and their organizations; Sorrow in serious injuries which have befallen several class members; success in frequently winning the spirit stick and delight in the sight of the Leopard paw sweat- shirts. I'd like to conclude by quoting the last lines of my class song of 1942: Our high school spirit Our high school friends Will reach as far as the Earth extends Though we travel far and near Our hearts will stay here My love to all of you, Gladys Baughman Class Advisor: Mrs. Gladys Baughman Class Officers: Row 1: Rhonda Brown — Secretary; Alicia Oiler — Vice President; Row 2: Scott Weber — Presi- dent; Vince Dingle — Treasurer Homeroom Presidents: Row 1: Holly Henry, Billy Jo Himes. These students were selected by their grade point average, standardized test scores, and teacher assessment forms, which tell of a student's performance. In Internship, which lasts from early December through late May, students choose a career which interests them, and once a week spend a day with a professional in their chosen field of study. Mr. Ed- ward Gift advises the students in Internship. Push yourself until the end. Hammond Success: Now And Forever There are many who look upon their own lives as being unsuccessful. These people believe they have never succeeded and believe they probably never will. These same persons look at others and believe they are always successful in whatever they strive to do. Success can be developed by anyone. Success can be achieved by you if you believe in yourself. Success is a state of mind just as failure is a state of mind. What you think and believe will determine success or failure. This school year has found abundant successes at Smithsburg High School. Through the academic program we have had more seniors achieve a 4.0000 or higher GPA than ever before in the history of the school, yet the enrollment is the lowest in ten years. Several of the athletic teams have achieved great successes through both the won loss records and champion- ships. Through the musical program one of our seniors achieved the title of All American with others succeeding in various other musical achievements. Our seniors through the Career Studies Center received 25% of the annual awards. Six other high schools collectively shared the other 75%. Each and every person, in some manner, achieves success. Reaching the end of your senior year even indicates an achievement. How we capitalize on our small successes determines the growth and development of our other successes. It takes little effort to achieve failure. It takes much hard work to achieve success. Remember, the dictionary is the only place where you will find that success comes before work. When you can think of yesterday without regret and of tomorrow without fear, you are on the road to success. If you wish success in life, make perseverance your closest friend, experience your wise counselor, caution your elder brother, and hope your guardian genius. Success if focusing the full power of all you are on what you have—a burning desire to achieve. Home- coming came to S.H.S. and the Leopards faced another loss to the Railroaders of Brunswick. The Leopards then went on the road to Williamsport and defeated the Wildcats by a score of 26-12. Coming home the next week the Cats took on the Eagles and came up a winner again, with a final score 7-0. The last game of the season was against our arch rivals, the Boonsboro Warriors. The girls team began the 1982 season with high hopes and key returning players such as Carol Wills, Ruth McCraw, and Betsy Schildt. Starting on the right track under the direction of new head coach Rosemarie Palligrino and assistant coach Rick Schultz, the girls had big wins over opponents such as Catoc- tin. North, F.S.K., and Middletown. Midway through the sea- son the only two undefeated teams in the county met for a showdown. On January 20, in front of the biggest crowd to date, in the Smithsburg High Gymnasium, the girls suffered their first loss to Williamsport High School Wildcats. After another disappointing loss to Boonsboro, they soon pulled together and returned to their winning ways! Ending the regu- lar season with a 16-4 record, the girls headed for the Regional Tournament ready to win. And win they did. Rolling over their opponents, Catoctin and Owings Mill (formerly 18-1) in the semifinals and finals, the Lady Leopards were now more than ready to return to the State Tournament for the 6th straight year. As the underdogs, the girls were to face Snow Hill in the Semi-Finals. Playing their best game of the year, the girls won the exciting and suspense filled game 57-51. The final was a rematch of the last year's two final teams. So with a one point, bitter loss fresh in their minds, the Lady Leopards won their 3rd State Championship Title by a score of 64-46. Juniors Get New Advisor Junior Class Advisor: Miss Robin Tritapoe Along with teaching for her first year, Robin Tritapoe has also bravely taken on the big re- sponsibility of being the new junior class advisor. She really enjoys being the advisor because it gives her a chance to meet and work with the students. When Miss Tritapoe was asked how she felt about the junior class students she has been working with, she replied: I feel that there is more spirit present in the junior class than in any other class. These kids are really hard work- ers. They're not afraid to work. They are very supportive when it comes to sales. The fund raisers they have held include: selling Christmas Balls, Stationery, Popcorn, Curiosity Kits, Spices, and Cheese and Sausage. Right now the junior class has over $4,000.00. They plan to raise more money to add to their treasury for the prom and class trip. Miss Tritapoe certainly has her work cut out for her. The Class of ”84 is looking forward to working with her. Mrs. Pad Reflects Sophomore Class Advisor: Mrs. Jamie Paci Mrs. lamie Paci, the newly appointed Sophomore class advisor, is thrilled to be working with the students of the class of 1985. Advisorship is not a new experience for her; however, Mrs. Paci has unique and different plans for the class. She hopes to have a prom committee in existence before the end of this school year. The class color, flower, motto, and song will be discussed prior to the beginning of the 1983-84 school year. Presently, the Sophomores have held several fund raising activities. These fund raisers range from selling Christmas balls to candy dishes. Sophomores plan to have a flower seed sale and a gigantic flea market in the spring. In their junior year, the class of 85 will continue with tradition as they plan to sell cheese and sausage and run the concession stand during the basketball session. As their advisor, I am very proud of their behavior and support. I want the Sophomore class to make a good name for themselves. I'd like other classes to look up to the Class of 85 and watch others follow in their footsteps, Mrs. Paci stated. Advisor Announces Plans Freshman Class Advisor: Miss Lori Spector Miss Lori Spector, advisor to the fresh- man class, is glad that she took this respon- sibility. The new advisor feels this is a good opportunity for her to meet and get to know a lot of students. The new teacher at Smithsburg High School also brings new ideas and hopes for the class. One of their goals is to plan some fun activities such as roller skating or pizza parties. Miss Spector feels the class should get together and do interesting activities with their money, but she wants them to organize these activities themselves. To start off the class treasury, the students sold Christmas candles. Inter- est in the sale was very high and the partici- pation was good. Miss Spector said, I'm glad that I have this opportunity to be an advisor. It makes me feel like more a part of the school. Boyer's playing the part again. 169 FBLA Makes Its Mark Row 1: Ellen Miklau, Karen Paulsgrove, Kathy Harp, Becky McCarney, Kelly Hogbin. The Smithsburg Chapter of Future Business Leaders has once again maintained an active year with its various parties, fund raisers, and activities. In October, the Chapter started off to enlighten everyone about National Enterprise Day by bringing various speakers to the school. A decision of the club was to support a foster child from Brazil. They held their annual Christmas party in December; they also held a pizza party and a skating party. With regional competitions around the corner, competing teams were organized and prepared. Regional competitions were held at Brunswick High School with state competition at Ocean City, Maryland. At State competition, the Chapter won a plaque for having the largest Chapter membership in Region I., fifth place for Voacational Education Week, and third place for their Scrapbook. Once again Rhonda Brown will be traveling to National Competi- tion, competing in the Stenographer II category. National competition will be held in San Francisco, California, during July. All of the members, whether competitive or not, did a fine job and should be proud of the Chapter of 1982-1983. Getting down to business 170 Rhonda Brown will compete in National Competition for the Stenographer II award. FBLA members enjoy their pizza. Who spiked the punch? Not letting a date mix-up dampen its spirits, the prom committee worked together under the guidance of Robin Tritapoe to stage a sensational prom. Every detail, from the selection of a good band to the arrangement of a tropical fruit bar, was well planned. The members of the commit- tee, although slightly tired from a long day of decorat- ing, enjoyed the long awaited evening. Laurie lies down on the job. 177 The Prom was held Friday, June 3, at the Ramada Convention Cen- ter. The theme was Two Tickets to Paradise . Music was provided by Magic. Huge chandeliers and colorful murals added to the ele- gance of the affair. In keeping with the theme, freshmen servers were dressed like Hawaiian natives. The highlight of the evening occurred when a volcanic mist covered the dance floor.
