Stevenson, D. Wolfe, W. Eigenbrode, D. Sheiss, L. Bushey. The band consists of thirty-five members and has been in existence for six years. It has practice sessions every Tuesday and Thursday. A Band Boosters Club was organized in June 1958 and earned enough money to buy new black and white uniforms for the band. The band had seven summer engagements and during the school year participated in the Alsatia Mum- mers Parade, Williamsport Tag Day Parade, Waynesboro Christmas Parade, and in the com- bined County Band Football Program at South High. It also played for the Lions Club Minstrel Show and presented a spring concert for the P.T. A. The band enjoyed a very successful year under the direction of Mr. Robert Crawford. ;6 Majorettes Sandra Naylor, Charlotte Emery, Louise Winters, Bonnie Taylor, Captain; Pam Pittenger, Pen- ny Pittenger, Charlene Shockey. The 1958-59 school year has been one of the most opportune and eventful seasons the high school majorettes have experienced. They traveled throughout the county and performed in various activities from football games to eventful parades. They were awarded much well-de- served praise as a result of their precision marching. 57 Future Homemakers of America President - PAT ROSS Advisor - MISS HOLLINGSWORTH The future homemakers have been very active this year. Their projects included entering the Alsatia Mummers Parade, the Great Hagerstown Fair, sending a care package, and buying equipment for the Home Economics room. They also helped with the dec- orations and refreshments for the P.T. A. Christmas Program. Two outstanding events of the year were the Mother and Daughter Banquet and the Moonlight Cruise. Future Farmers of America President - GLENN PETERSON Advisor - MR. FULLER TheF.F.A. is an extracurricular activity made up of boys enrolled in vocational agriculture. The founda- tion upon which the organization is built includes leadership and character development, sportsmanship, coopera- tion, service, thrift, scholarship, im- proved agriculture, organized recrea- tion, citizenship and patriotism. The Smithsburg chapter is one of the oldest in the county having received its charter in 1930. 58 Future Teachers of America President - BONNIE WINDERS Advisor - MR. HULL The F.T. A. Club is a group of stu- dents who are interested in the profes- sion of teaching. The purpose of the club is to give the members a better understanding of the teaching field. Future Nurses of A nieriea Advisor - MRS. WOLFINGER The F.N. A. was inactive this year due to a heavy schedule. The club, as its name suggests, is concerned with girls planning to enter the field of nurs- ing. This year an attempt was made to combine the club with a Junior Red Cross unit. School Safety Patrol Advisor - MR. JOHN. PIKE The purposes of the School Safety Patrol are: 1 - to instruct, direct and control the pupils in crossing the streets and highways at or near the school; and 2 - to assist teachers and parents in the instruction of school children in safety practices in the use of streets and high- ways at all times and places. Visual Aids President - WILLIAM HEEFNER Advisor - MR. TROXELL The club is composed of 9th - 12th graders who are interested in learning the operation of the motion picture and electronic equipment in the school The members also operate the curtains and lights at school functions and the annual minstrel show. 59 Student Council Advisor - MRS. ST. CLAIR The student council is made up of the class presidents and vice presidents. They meet bi-monthly and practice self-government and direct some extra- curricular activities with the approval of the administration. Jean Boswell is the secretary of the Washington County Council of Student Councils. Cheerleaders Three seniors, one junior, and two sophomores make up the S.H.S. group of cheerleaders who were very active during the basketball season. Their work is closely supervised by the librarian. Senior Girin’ Chorus Advisor - MRS. ROBINETTE The Senior Girls comprise this chorus. They sing for assemblies and P. T.A. meetings. They are mostly interested in providing graduation music. Sophomore Girls’ Chorus Advisor - MRS. ROBINETTE Two sections of girls from grade 10 make up this chorus. They are scheduled once a week and often sing with the Senior Girls' Chorus. Bovs’ Chorus Advisor - MRS. ROBINETTE The Boys' Chorus is made up of thirty-four selected and talented boys and young men from grades 8 to 12 who like to sing. The Boys' Varsity Baseball team did not have a very successful season in 1958. They won only 3 out of 18 games played, so they finished in last place in the County Baseball League.
