We hope this dedication will show a small portion of our appreciation to these two outstanding teachers. FCREWORD We, the SMITHION Staff, hope that you will find here many memories of the year 1952-53, our last and best year at Smithsburg High School. I ma ma fer K In the early years of the nineteenth century, a group of pupils assembled in a small stone building located where the Western Maryland Railroad crosses Main Street. The site of the building had been deeded for a school by Frederick Unger, one of the progressive citizens of Smithsburg. The people built the school and paid tuition so their children could attend. In this pioneer fashion the education svstem of Smithsburg began. For a time the school was conducted by Mr. Unagst, and after his resignation Mr. George Pearson was appointed to the position. Mr. Pear- son was one of the most successful teachers. His discipline was severe, but his subjects were thoroughly taught. His superior instruction en- abled many of his pupils to enter college as juniors, skipping both fresh- man and sophomore years, The subjects taught included the familiar reading, writing, and arithmetic, as wellas more advanced work such as Latin, Greek, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. The first railroad was built through Smithsburg in 1869, and the school was torn down. Until the construction of a new building, school was continued in rooms rented in the town. The new building was erected along the Cavetown Pike. After sev- eral years, with this building in need of extensive repairs and with a greatly increased attendance, it was decided that a new and larger school was needed. In the latter part of the l800's, afour room, two storybrickbuilding was constructed on the site of the present high school, and Mr. Pearson continued as principal until his retirement in 1884. W 1 I y x SMITHSB URG HIGH SCHOOL By 1915, increased enrollment forced the razing of the old building anda new brick structure of eight rooms replaced it. In 1930, an addition was made. Today there are eighteen classrooms, a library, cafeteria, gymnasium, auditorium, office, and bookroom. The building houses an elementary school composed of grades one to six, and a high school con- taining grades seven through twelve. Until 1947, the principal was required to handle all correspondence, and to take care of any other matters concerning the school. At that time the Washington County Board of Education provided a full-time secretary to relieve him of many of these duties. In 1945, a Parent-Teachers Association was formed. The cure rent active membership numbers over one hundred. In 1949, limited space for the ever increasing number of students forced the remodeling of the cafeteria. It was partitioned so that it is used as two classrooms during the periods when lunches are not being served. In the current year, there are thirty teachers on the faculty, ten in elementary and twenty in secondary education. Mr. Frank Getty is the high school principal and Mrs. Margaret Stouffer is principal of the elementary school. Mrs. Nuss serves as office secretary. Over 643 students are enrolled in the entire school. Of these, approximately 350 are in the high school in academic, general, and vo- cational courses. The vocational courses include home economics, agriculture, and two recent additions commerce and industrial arts. The industrial arts course includes both wood and metal shops. In the academic field, Latin was recently dropped from the curriculum and French was added. The modern cafeteria is operated on a non-profit basis byamanager and two assistants, who are appointed by the Board of Education. Hot lunches are served daily to approximately 250 students and teachers. 'OAS Bo -S. .E'f' may ' X J? 1 VYQI' 'P 4... 9 05599 r 4 rw .xgolminidfrafion I FRANK GETTY Principal, Psychology A. B. , M. CLASS HISTORY '53 Early in September, a bewildered group of 52 of us entered the doors of Smithsburg High School to begin our venturesome years in higher education. Venturesome they were! With the confusion of find- ing our correct rooms in which various classes were held, and being shoved around by the upper classmen, we were in a state of bedlam. There was also much difficulty in making acquaintances with the many different teachers. However, we became acquainted with the new routine very quickly. In the spring of f48 our class held a party at Cold Springs'Park. Class supervisors: Miss Bertha Britner, Mr. Chester Wight. Summer vacation soon passed and the school year 1948-49 came. We found ourselves in the eighth grade with a class enrollment of 55. The increased number was due to the transfer of 15 students from Cas- cade .School. Our class activity for this year was a skating party held at Cold Springs Park. The school term 19Q9-50 began with 65 of us entering the halls of Smithsburg High as Greenie Freshmen coming from all directions, as far away as Highfield. This year we had many wonderful activities. Two which should have mentionable honors were the Hallowe'en party held in Shirley Schildt's garage QI wonder who spiked the cider, and the trip to Hershey Park at the closing of the year. In the fall of 1950, 60 of us formerly known as Greenie Fresh- ,mimi men opened the doors of Smithsburg High and became f'Soft-head Sophomores. In December, some of us took part in the Christmas program given by the Glee Club. On December 20th, we held an enjoy- able Christmas party in Ann Bachtell's garage. In the spring we Con- tracted travel fever again and spent an educational day in Washington, D. C. In the evening we went to the Capitol Theater and witnesseda stafze show and movie. 1950-51 Class Officers ioA - Pres. -Patricia sniveiy 1013 - Pres. -David Fritz Vice Pres. -Robert Lynn Vice Pres. -Patsy Smith Sec. -Treas. -Shirley Schildt Sec. -Treas. -Donald Leather Class sponsors: Miss Nadine Clendening, Mrs. MarySt. Clair Inseptember '51, 45 of us brave souls entered S. H. S.and became Jolly Juniors. We had no idea that it was going to be such a success- ful year. In October, Shirley Schildt, Carolyn Flaugher, Janet Mc- Glaughlin, Patsy Smith, and Robert Lynn journeyed to Baltimore to represent Smithsburg at the Maryland All-State Chorus. In the same week Ann Bachtell attended the Maryland Association of Student Councils in Catonsville. In December, members of our class again participated in the Christmas program given by the Glee Club. On December Z3rd, we had our Christmas party in the Smithsburg Community Hall, chap- eroned by Miss Marsada Yeakle and Mr. Dean Smith. In the spring we held cake sales and sponsored movies in order to finance the Junior- Senior Prom. On May 9th, the exciting moment came--the prom! Under the very capable supervision of Mr. Laun Smith the most successful prom ever held at Smithsburg High School was made possible. Jack Hartle and his Mello-Men furnished the music. To complete ,the year we again chose Hershey Park for our annual spring trip. 1951-52 Class Officers 11A -Pres. -Ann Bachtell 11B - Pres. -Delores Bachtell Vice Pres. -Gary Harbaugh Sec. -Treas. -Connie Shindlechdcer Sec. -Treas. -Janet McGlaughlin Finally the last year at S. H. S. and surely the most memorable one arrived. We entered the traditional homeroom, the lab, as So- phisticated Seniors with Miss'Marsada Yeakle as our advisor. Through the tempting. years, 25 dropped by the wayside, leaving 39 capable mem- bers to realize the greater opportunities available. We elected our last class officers: Pres. -Ann Bachtell, Vice Pres. - Richard Happelg Secretary-Patsy Smithg Treasurer-Robert Lynn. In September, Donald Leather attended the F. F. A. Convention in Kansas City, as a delegate from the State of Maryland. In October, Carolyn Flaugher and Janet McGlaughlin represented our school in the Maryland All-State Chorus. Ann Bachtell attended the iMaryland Associ- ation of Student Councils in Hagerstown. Our last Christmas at Smithsburg High School was a very success- ful one, with most of us participating in the Christmas play, A Day at King Arthur's Court . Iiext came our class play in April which was a great success considering thatit was the only one we ever gave. Three of our girls Shirley Schildt, Carolyn Flaugher, and Janet McGlaughlin made their first TV appearance on channel 4, on the program Junior Review. Then finally the big day arrived, June 5, graduation! Although we had many discouraging moments we shall never forget the good times at Smithsburg High School.
