JANICE BOWMAN lIJanll Academic is not how long but how well we live PRESTON TROUPE Presto General Ah' happy years' on more who would not be a boy ' MAR LENE LARR ABEE airy Marlene General The great hope of society is individual character RICHARD KUHN Dick Vocational With malice toward none with charity for all NANCY WINTERS Nan General Sadness and gladness succeed each other Cyan JLAJOP As FRESHMEN In the fall of 1948 we entered the halls of Sm1thsburg H1gh A class numberlng s1xty f1ve greemes had assembled here from all d1rect1ons from as far away as Cascade and as near as Greensburg We were asked to map our dest1n1es for the next four years by select1ng our course of study Mrs St Cla1r and M1ss Yeakle were gxventhe custody of thxs group f lost souls Our f1rst soc1al act1v1ty was 1n the form of a Welcome Party g1ven to the newcomers 1nto the Jumor I-hgh School Aprrl 29 1949 the Sc1ence Class chartereda bus for a tr1p to Wash lngton D C Followlng a study of Natural Scrence we wlshed to further our knowledge w1th v1s1ts to the several museums 1n the Cap1tO1 c1ty Other po1nts of lnterest were also rncluded ln the tour By the end of thls flrst year we were beg1nn1ng to look upon the upperclassmen w1th less awe and the faculty had become our most pat1ent 1nstructors rather than the sullen masters of our fate As SOPHOMORES September of 49 rolled around fast We had now matured 1nto fxfty sxx gay Sophomores The advrsors for the Academ1cs were Mr Glenn Bushey and for the Vocatlonals Mr Frank Warf1eld Webster says Sophomore comes from two words meamng Wlse and Fool1sh The records tell us that there were th1rteen of our class on the semester honor roll so that expla1ns the wlsdom of our class As for the foollsh aspects should we refer to those who left us v1a the matr1mon1al route or some of the antxcs of Dlck and DOHHIC? Oh well let's all share mn th1s Just to keep the record stralght as well as honest In sports we fared qulte well placlng four g1rls and one boy on the Vars1ty basketball teams and f1ve boys on the Jayvee team In the sprlng we contracted wandemng fever agaln and spent an en Joyable day at Hershey Amusement Park Then JUNIORS Hooray' We had reached the three quarter mark but there were now Just forty f1ve of us M155 W1lson and Mr Warf1eld were to gulde us through the next nlne mon hs of our careers After the smoke had cleared as the result of our class elect1ons the follow1ng were the suc ces sful cand1dates Sectwn A Sect1on B Arthur Pmtenger Presrdent Jeanne Brown Robert Mrller V Presxdent Gladys Brown Janet Sch1ldt Sec Treas Joyce Schxldt O ' v H . . . . . ' 1 ' 4 , - We chose to present The S1xth Key as our Junmor play Under the very competent dxrectzon of M1ss Forrest and M1ss W1lson we were able to d1scover some very fxne actors who were later to star 1n the Senlor play the fol1ow1ng year The presentat1on was rece1ved by our patrons w1th muchaccla1m How can the members of the class ever forget those long n1ght pract1ces and the even longer days that followed those re hearsals Ho hum' Then the Prom on May 11 Well there IS so much to say We were all ln a wh1r1 Whose band should we have? D1d you get out the 1nv1ta t1ons? What are the refreshments? How shall we decorate? D1d you get enough crepe paper? When can we f1nd t1me to do xt? D1d you get a date yet? When are you havmg your ha1r done? How w1ll I be able to get that corsage after school? W1l1 pop let me use the car? Do you see what I mean? Just the same we had It and no casualt1es Aga1nth1s year the class chose Hershey for the1r annual spr1ng tr1p I was begxnnlng to th1nk someone was g1V1ng away free chocolate bars to lure us back Now and f1na11y SENIORS Let us beg1nby dolng a l1ttle rem1n1sc1ng In 1948 we had s1xty f1ve members 1949 there were flfty s1x 1n 1950 forty f1ve remamed and here we are to f1n1sh w1th Just forty two left Many of us were tempted durmng these years to drop out for the same reasons that twenty three of our members d1d qu1t We who remamed were able to see and reallze the greater opportun1t1es that would be ava1lable 1n our futures 1f we should flmsh our h1gh school educat1on We beheved as our athlet1c eams that A W1nner Never Qults and a Qu1tter Never W1ns Because of overcrowded cond1t1ons 1n our school the class was comblned 1nto one homeroom the lab trad1t1onal room of the Semor Class Mr Rohrbaugh was the adv1sor for our flnal year Our off1cers for th1s year were Presxdent Eugene Brown V1ce Pres1dent Robert Mlller Secretary Treasurer Robert Sn1vely Early 1n the year the members of the class accepted an 1nv1tat1on to v1s1t the plant of the Pangborn Corporatxon After the tour lunch was served by the company to the v1s1tors Our next endeavor was 1n the form of a food sale wh1ch was held 1n one of the local stores Contr1but1ons of food were made by members of the class Th1s proved quxte successful In the mlddle of November most of the Seruor boys planned a tr1p to Hershey w1th other members of the soccer squad After leavlng the arena follow1ng the hockey game most of them had declded they would prefer soccer to hockey mf they had to play It Then came the annual product1on by our Mask and W1ggers whxch was none other than Beauty and the Beef It all happened on January 31 1952 at 8 O0 P M Glnny Allen Jamce Bowman hoped her past on a qu1z program would be a closed book smce she had moved to a small town Beef R1chard Coffman thought hxmself pretty cute 1n offer1ng to help her w1th her hlstory not suspect1ng It to be her spec1al f1eld Then th1ngs really got compllcated when Laura Wmmfred Shockey Lester fSammy Ferguson and Prof Barton Donrne R1denour came 1nto the course of events t H . . , ' - . . . ,I . . f . .
