CLASS HISTQRY One early September morn 1n the year of one thousand nme hundred forty s1x a gang of k1ds numbermg forty f1ve trouped 1nto Room Z4 for roll call From here the boys were put under the gu1d1ng w1ng of Mrs Mann and the g1rls under the 1nfluence of M1ss Schroyer As Halloween txme approached everyone felt 1n the mood for a party so one was staged at Jean Huntsberry's home Only a few turned up but they had scads of fun Wh1le freshmen the class part1c1pated 1n the Jun1or h1gh operetta 'The Whxte Gypsy Donald Bachtell Sh1rley DeWees Peggy Reecher R1chard Gardenhour and Charles Gardenhour played the lead1ng roles Th1s stage performance was under the dlrectlon of Mrs Dorothy Se1bert the mus1c teacher The school term of '47 '48 found the A sectlon 1n Room 31 w1th M1ss Stull and the B sectxon 1n Room Z7 w1th Mrs St C1a1r Th1s year the group numbermg th1rty n1ne no longer felt that they were the green1e freshmen of '46 The class off1cers were chosen as follows A Sectlon Pres1dent Sh1rley DeWees V1ce Pres1dent Sarah Newcomer B Sectxon Presldent Donald Kl1ne Vxce Presldent Regxna Barkdoll Secretary Jane Fahnestock Those who showed the1r ath1et1c ab1l1ty were Sh1rley Dwyer Glorm Kendall Betty Gearhart and Annabelle Grayb1ll for the gxrls the boys were Beckley Snyder Donald Bachtell Charles and R1chard Gardenhour John Yeates Bobby Ge1ser Rmchard Bxkle and Curt1s Wolf On June 13 1948 a class p1cn1c was held at Hershey Park Trans portat1on was prov1ded by a chartered bus Who w1ll ever forget the odor when a gallon of p1ckles fell to the floor and broke ' No one seemed to care they were eaten just the same In September of '48 the class agam journeyed back to Smxthsburg But th1s t1me they were the JollyJun1ors numbermg th1rty exght W1th Room Z8 as the1r homeroom and Mr Surnmers as thexr supervlsor they ' . had a very enjoyable year before them Th1s year Donald Kl1ne was entrusted w1th leadxng the class and R1chard B1k1e assxsted hmm Curt1s Wolf kept accurate records and Donald Bachtell doled out the money Pumpkxns lanterns and cold cr1sp a1r meant Halloween aga1n Th1s tune the party was held at Gardenhour's cabxn It seems that a worse mght cou1dn't have been chosen The fog and ram were terr1f1c But Just the same a large number turned out Who w1ll ever forget the Jumor class play Beyond Reason ' present d on January Z1 I949' It seemed that bad weather was always our choosmg th1s mght was dreadful Roads were 1cy and the fog could have been cut w1th a kn1fe but nevertheless lt was the best-attended functxon ever held at Smlthsburg I-hgh On February 18 under the gu1d1ng wmg of Mrs St Clazr the class travelled to Gettysburg Battlefxeld W1th the a1d of a gu1de they observed the famous landmarks The Jun1or Senxor Prom was an event wh1ch w1ll be a lxvmg memory for everyone who attended The gymnasxum was d1sgu1sed as a sprmg flower garden and was really magmflcent Refreshments were served from a garden tea wagon the wheels of wh1ch were decorated w1th whxte roses Musmc was furmshed by Al Gruber and h1s orchestra The troupe th1s year was well represented on the athlet1c f1eld The heroes and hero1nes were Donald Bachtell Charles and R1chard Gardenhour R1chard B1k1e Bobby Ge1ser Bawn McCrea Jxmmy Hexston Curt1s Wolf and John Yeates Glor1a Kendall Shxrley Dwyer Shxrley DeWees Peggy Reecher Roberta Hershberger and Pat Wendland For the fmnal and most memorable year the class aga1n met th1s t1me mn the trad1t1onal homeroom Z9 Wxth Mr Rohrbaugh as the adv1sor they could truly say they were soph1st1cated sen1ors Vot1ng for class offlcers was the fxrst ordeal The ballots read Jack Cl1ne Presxdent R1chard Brown V1ce Presxdent Jean Rowe Secretary and Donald Bachtell Treasurer The staff of the yearbook a truly senxor project was put lnto successful accompllshrnent The he men of the class th1s year were Donald Bachtell Curt1s Wolf Bobby Ge1ser Charles and Rlchard Gardenhour Bawn McCrea and J1mmy Hexston They put forth the1r efforts and sp1r1ts 1n produc1ng f1ne soccer basketball and baseball teams It seems as though the gxrls would rather be spectators than players Glor1a Kendall was the only g1r1 who part1c1 pated mn fleldball She showed fzne sportsmanshxp and excellent playmg U1 every game Ccmflrwrl 1 ' ' C . , . . 1 . 1 - .
